    Going back to the original thread topic of needing big men...when do we go back to the Darius Latham option?

    I know he is only 6'5" but is a round mound of rebound with a nice shooting touch.  I believe he was an Indiana boys all-star as well.  At this point, It looks like a pretty good option even if it is only for one season and a partial season at that.

    A better question to ask is do you want results or do you want student-athletes?

    I think Kentucky answered that question when they signed a deal with the devil.  Win at all costs....

    Cal had the system already in place at Memphis...Kentucky just paid for it.

    His system is simple:

    The recruiting:  Come and play for me and you get:  National exposure, 5-star recruit teammates, Direct pipeline to the NBA/shoe contracts (WWW), and a great NCAA tournament record (this year just reinforced that theory).

    The reality:  Those that do, move on after one year.  Those that don't make the recruiting "promise", either have to play behind others or transfer out.  To Cal this doesn't matter because he usually has 5 replacements coming right behind with the same promise.

    This system doesn't support the NCAA or the student athlete theory.

    HoosierCoop reacted to IU Hoosier41 in #IUBB Walk On Tryouts Recap
    "Welcome to the 2014-2015 Indiana University walk on tryouts! This will be a grueling 4 day event with 10 rounds of cuts. We hope you all play your hardest and wish you all the best of luck!"

    [attachment=744:ImageUploadedByBtownBanners1397481478.440746.jpg]

    "We will now be splitting you into two random groups. Group A: The 6'8" kid, You, The 6'7 1/8th" kid, The 6'6" kid on his tippy toes and The tallest guy over there, please go to the athletic offices. The rest of you are Group B so stay here and we'll start with some Around the World competition"

    Group A: "welcome to Coach Crean's office, you have officially made it to the Final round of try outs. Please see coach for your first test."

    [attachment=745:ImageUploadedByBtownBanners1397481495.989947.jpg]

    Coach Crean: "what's your favorite flavor of gum?"

    6'10" Kid- "juicy Fruit..."

    [attachment=746:ImageUploadedByBtownBanners1397481508.223000.jpg]

    Coach Crean hands him a nice piece of Juicy fruit. "Chew this. Now walk to the door, touch the corner, turn around and walk back to me."

    6'10" Kid - "....okay coach??"

    6'10" kid completes the task without problem. The rest of the kids try with all but one succeeding.

    "Next step guys" says Crean. "What number do you want to wear? Welcome to the Indiana Hoosiers!!!"

    Now back to Group B...

    After a couple rounds of Around the World, the shorter, less tall kids, less vertically gifted, lower center of gravity kids are moving on to a game of Knockout.

    As the game continues Coach Crean enters the gym. "Welcome to tryouts gentlemen, this is an incredible opportunity for you STUDENT athletes. We take great pride in our STUDENT athletes and make sure we always put the STUDENT before the athlete. Therefore, did you all bring your transcripts like I requested?"

    "Ya coach we got 'em" Player A says

    Crean- "Sorry son, I'm afraid you have been cut, we need proper English out of our walk ons. Thanks for coming out."

    Player A- "....but ... But the Doctor says my younger brother is going to be 7'5"..."

    Coach Crean - "....and by cut I meant you've been cut from the rest of the tryouts, welcome to the team!"

    Crean-" Actually, to speed this process up, why don't you guys align yourself from the baseline in order of GPA, highest to lowest."

    The players align themselves in order in anticipation for what comes next.

    [attachment=747:ImageUploadedByBtownBanners1397481659.156683.jpg]

    "Great, we'll take the 3 kids on the right with 4.0 GPAs. Any of you happen to be from Indiana?"

    All three players nod yes.

    "PERFECT! Welcome aboard kids!"

    If you have any friends that are over 6'6" and can hold a basketball, you may want to see if they want to transfer to IU and walk on... I'm dead serious lol.

    This was mildly amusing at first. Then depressing. Now it's just down right stupid how this offseason is going. I wish my day wasn't affected by the decision on 17-20 year old kids. Make no mistake folks, this isn't about Thompson. This is 2 players not even showing up after the Vonleh rumors. I guess it can't get much worse. I fully expect Cunningham to commit elsewhere as well. It's the biggest trend these days.

    agreed and this is where I was going with my earlier post.  Negative recruiting happens everywhere.  Why are we shocked to hear it.  We hope that it is not true but it probably happens more than we know.

    Honestly it is one of those I don't care if it is true or not.  Anymore all that is focused on the negative.  I am not saying whether or not I like Crean, because that is not the issue here.  This is like anything in life that everyone here deals with.  You will have some people like you and some that don't.  If Noah does really do this, Crean can point to what people said about Noah coming in and then point to his potential top 5 status in a loaded draft.  Of all of the high end recruits this year Noah was voted #1 by ESPN before the year to be a potential bust.  He was too raw and too small.  He is still raw but showed enough to up his status.  Also, he put on 20 lbs last summer.  On top of that if he blasts Crean, he could also point to every player singing his praises playing professional basketball somewhere.  I mean look at the supposed greatest recruiting class of all time to the south.  Do you think every prior burger boy is singing the praises of Calipari?  You had 3 to 4 kids who were thought of as locks to be top 10 picks in this draft before this year.  Now you have 1.  Do you think the Harrison twins are going to sing the praises of Calipari in private?  Probably not.

    With all the fallout from this past season people are ready to jump a ship that isn't sinking! The team we will have in 14-15 will be able to run and gun with the addition of JBJ, Hotzel, and Johnson. Think about it... If HMP makes the jump next year (which I think he will) the zone will no longer be a problem. Yogi,Stan, and Troy will have shooters around them that will open up the middle and leave the drive and kick, or pick and roll open for the taking!! Deven Davis reminds me of A.J. Moye and could be the intangible next year. This all plays in to CTC'S  offensive philosophy! Hanner must step up with his ball handling and if he can develop a 10 footer face up? Look out! I look for the leadership of Yogi and maturity of Stan and Troy to make a three guard line up work with either HMP or Deven. JBJ and Johnson will make I.U. formidable in the back court with Yogi running things. Overall, I see this team doing what Crean likes to do if they play smart and limit turnovers. If Crean spends his summer watching and correcting his mistakes in game, we could be the dark horse in the Big Ten next year!! That being said... I can't wait to hear a few replies to what I believe. GO I.U.!!!
