(2022) - PF Kaleb Banks to Tulane
MikeRoberts replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
How is Banks game coming along? It’s good to see he is putting up big numbers but how is his footwork in the paint? How is is jumpshot/midrange game? Can he beat players off the dribble and get to the hoop? -
Thank you for doing the work to prove my point. The “talent level” of our roster is mostly on par with that of many of the better teams in the bigten. it’s all of the other things that have ailed us as a program. getting pieces that don’t work together, not developing the players we have, transfers, coaching schemes that don’t work… those are all bigger issues than the overall talent of our rosters.

Best Place To Watch IU beat down MSU

Take a gummy or two and fall asleep -
I have no idea what he sees in Kopp. If he was knocking down shots that would be one thing but he isn’t and because he is subpar at really everything else he has been a huge negative. geronimo does almost everything better than him including being able to stay in front of his man on defense, rebound, protect the rim etc and Galloway, his pure energy, leadership and ability to create for others is a must

I don’t want to hear any excuses about our guys being gassed when we had scholarship players on the bench that didn’t get 1 minute of action. put him in for two minutes each half to give our players a breather for f sake: not asking for him to ply major minutes. wtf? We are baking in an excuse for next year when we lose our entire front court and have to play small balll

We as fans don’t deserve this. I don’t mean 1 loss, I mean the complete disregard for what it takes to be successful. im not pissed we lost to wisconsin, it’s that we rolled over and quit with 20 minutes to play. I’m not pissed we lost at home to Michigan and Illinois, it’s that we had awful gameplans and again rolled over and got blown out. I’m not pissed we lost to Northwestern, I’m pissed that with the season on the line, our first ncaa tournament birth in 5 years on the line, it wasn’t THAT important to 5 of our guys. if it’s not important to them, why should it be important for me? I live 30 minutes away from Northwestern and went to every game there for a decade until numerous embarrassing losses under Archie and I got that same gut feeling tonight and said “f it”, I’m not going. glad I didn’t waste my time and money

Mostly agree. I agree with the idea that forcing the ball into race and trayce was an awful idea. what I don’t agree with is that no matter what we would have lost. As you pointed out, in the first half, we didn’t force it inside and we played pretty well. A similar formula could have garnered a different outcome, it would have. when you are a shooter and plays aren’t being run for you, it’s hard to get in a rhythm and that was the second half for us. -

I think it’s just really poorly utlilized. There are lineups that could work. There are rotations that could work. There are ways to get the most out of each player and rotation but we just dont -

I guess. He’s right on his career average at 22% so 4 years says that’s pretty much what he is, a pretty poor 3 point shooter. Yes, he will have a few makes but it’s not a trend when 4 years says otherwise -

He will because his jump shot is not good. I don’t want him shooting jump shots. That said, stagger play with him and Race so they each play 30 mins but play to gather as little as possible and put players in with them that compliment them. same reason Purdue doesn’t play Eddey and Williams together, they are similar players -

Race is very 1 dimensional offensively. Can he handle the ball a little, sure but it’s not like that is a highlight of his. to say that he has finally started to hit his 3 pointers is so not true. If you are saying 22% is good or something I guess we will have to disagree. Maybe you mean compared to his 20% from last year? -

I think we are getting at some of the concerns that need addressing ASAP in recruiting and coaching. TJD is a good defender and good offensively but very 1 dimensional and if that 1 dimension gets taken away, he’s done. IU should never pass up an opportunity to get a TJD but if we do, we need to be more strategic about who we recruit to play along with him. To a lesser degree, same with Race. Good defender, decent offensively but very one dimensional offensively and unfortunately, it’s the same dimension as TJD. Race is a middle class version of TJD. for them to be two of our better players, that sucks. They are similar players that don’t compliment each other. Neither are slashers, neither have a mid-range nor 3 point shot. So, if you are going to play two 1 dimensional players you have to surround them with bombers. I know the staff tried to do that with Kopp, X and Parker but they forgot that they actually needed to utilize them. We run nothing for them. So what we end up with is this really stagnant, predictable offense where they defense knows exactly what we are going to do -

Good teams hold themselves and their teammates accountable and communicate. I can only go off of what I see in games but that doesn’t happen in the games we see. I saw an amazing clip and story about Georgia football and that being the difference for them this year - player accountability and leadership. The video was of a goal line stand where a defender wasn’t in the right place and offense scores and the captain ran over and grabbed him by the pads and was barking at him and pointing where he should have been. coach didn’t need to say anything, the players knew and sorted it out oops, quotes the wrong post -

100%. Those two are not gun-shy, but they should be, yet we have two sharp shooters that have no urgency to work to get shots up -

Lander is usually a net negative and he was again yesterday. There are some things we should have learned by now: - Lander is not a reliable sub, still out of position and out of control - phinisee, when healthy still cannot shoot but that doesn’t stop him from trying to be a volume shooter - TJD is a monster against smaller, less athletic teams - TJD is pushed around and timid against bigger, more athletic players - Durr cannot guard smaller, more athletic players - Durr does a pretty good job defending other plodding 7 footers - TJD will not shoot it outside of 8 feet - TJD doesn’t recognize when it’s 1 v 3 and he should kick it back out (his teammates stand around) - Kopp and Stewart stand around on offense - Kopp and Stewart are not great defenders - Kopp and Stewart have been no shows in way too many games and are not getting the ball in dangerous places to get off volume 3s - X is good driving to the basket and finishing with his right. X is not good driving to the basket and finishing with his left. - X is good when taking care of the ball and looking to distribute - galloways shot outside of 15 feet is still broke, can hit the floater in the lane - Galloway is a pest on defense and shows leadership qualities on the court - Race is a tough defender and rebounder - race still cannot shoot the 3 yet has no problem trying with very little success - Geronimo is so inconsistent but shows flashes of what he could be. he defends and rebounds well - gets lost sometimes and finds himself trying to dribble and shoot outside shots when he is a man around the hoop - there is no leadership on this team. There is no on-court coaching and accountability. Galloway tries but he is a sophomore that isn’t always on the court -

Absolutely, but he could have done that after high school. Europe, China etc will always be there for a 6’9” with his skills. The NBA will not, he needs a shot to have that type of career difference between making $500k a year and $5mill a year -

Oh I’m not expecting him to develop a shot, it should have come by now. That one thing is going to be the difference between playing 2 seasons in the NBA and having a 12 year career. I think he makes an NBA roster, sits for a season or two and then goes to Europe for 10 years. It’s a shame, he’s known his weakness his whole career and never developed it
