Maybe 10-15 schools have done it consistently, out of several hundred? Not an easy thing to do. And none of those places started from the "death penalty" we had after Sampson. That's part of the problem. Until IU becomes stable again, we won't be attractive to another "elite" coach.

Problem is the BOTs, President and the AD, football and basketball coaches, don't have any doubts about themselves. :)

Woody was a late hire, so I understand focusing on the team you have. But after the first year, some harder evaluations should have been made -- especially regarding culture, work ethic, and potential. So players have gotten better, but some not so much.

I don't think most people realize the effect of the essential death sentence we gave ourselves. Almost impossible to recover, as we can see (see SMU football).

Fair enough, but it's easy to sit behind a keyboard on the interweb and say shoulda woulda coulda. And all I am saying that it's easier said than done, and very few ADs/GMs etc. can do it. I would posit that nobody here would have hired Coach K based on his first 8 years.

You don't think Crean, Archie and Woody had that shpeel down? Crean and Archie had a one dimensional system that worked at the mid major level, and didn't really work in the Big 10. They clearly failed to adopt. Point is you don't know. Unless your hiring a proven winner -- ie; Willams to UNC. And if you're going after a proven winner, why would they leave their current situation for IU? Moving guys up from assistants or mid majors -- it's just a crap shoot.

Coach K was 55% at Army with 3 of 5 winning seasons. First 3 years at Duke he has on winning season and was 44%. Not quite elite performance. Compare to Roy Williams. He pretty much kicked @$$ from day one.

Right. Problem is what's he been doing to get them "over the hump." So far, it looks like jack squat. My recommendation is to use the bench to motivate them over the hump. It may be ugly, but gotta do something.

It does if you keep the last coach's players. I am starting to think Woody should have just blown it up and started from scratch.

Painter is a system guy. Doesn't find the "best" players but finds the right players and puts him into a system for the betterment of the team. That's why, year in and year out, he's in the mix.

I get that. And I just can’t believe for the second coach in a row they aren’t “coaching.” I’m thinking the players aren’t getting it. 30 seconds into the game we had a player blow a defensive assignment for an easy score. Time and time again it’s happening. Only thing left in my mind is the motivation of the bench, and yes I fault woody for that.
