  1. Not sure why Rob always walked it up, but also: our transition offense was nonexistent. Can you describe a Miller-era fast break?
  2. Marshall is a non-negotiable no. But he also mentioned Chris Jans, an interesting new long shot name.
  3. This is where he and Musselman aren’t the same. The year before Musselman got there, they were Kenpom 270. Truly hard to be that bad at a large mid-major. Musselman y1: 124 y2: 54, regular season and conf tourney champs y3: 25, conf champs, sweet 16. Second time in school history, tied for second highest seed ever y4: 27, conf champs, same seed
  4. Compare Alford at Nevada with Musselman at the same spot. Another worthwhile reason to move quickly: recruiting includes keeping the current roster together to the extent you can / want to.
  5. Good point re: NIT. That game was at 9 pm on 3/14 and we heard the Crean news at noon 3/16.
  6. Fun game! I’d interview Fife, Gates, and Shrewsberry at least. Probably would like to have a Martelli-style top assistant next to one of them, so I’d gauge their openness to that. I’d be curious how they viewed next year’s team and their chances of making the tournament in y1, as well as a vision to reach the top echelon of the conference — lately the very top is the Michigan schools if the criteria is consistency at a high level, recruiting, and chances at big time tournament and conference success.
  7. And drops to 2.5M on 4/1. It’s so low I had to check this but here it is: https://media.everythinglubbock.com/nxsglobal/everythinglubbock/document_dev/2019/04/29/Chris Beard - 2019_1556568389982_85046221_ver1.0.pdf Good pick, though I know @Stuhoo has been vocal that he doesn’t think Beard leaves the state of TX. We’ll find out.
  8. Yeah, can’t wait for Pap to swing by, or for Chris to relay what he hears tomorrow...
  9. Probably depends on the terms, right? If he wants out and wants to be a candidate elsewhere ASAP you can probably negotiate some horse trades about mitigation, buyout, etc. but that might take more time. More likely he’s competitive and doesn’t want out but sees what we all see. So you talk about coming to the table but decide the contract stands and separate on the existing terms. The other timing considerations are your target(s)/interview process/competitors. Only Beilein and Matta are free now among the most-discussed candidates here; everyone else plays at least next weekend. All told: within a week? Chris thinks sooner though. Hmmmmmmm
  10. Yes, meant to mention that.
  11. I doubt it moved the needle, because my guess was Dolson was already planning to Do It, but a real stinker like tonight sure makes you feel good about your decision if you’d made up your mind.
  12. Pikiell’s good! It’s a testament to him AND why IU needs a change that Rutgers is consistently better at everything than IU lately (except shiny recruiting rankings).
  13. If Miller is back AH will be a bad vibe next year unless things really change
  14. I don’t think we know exactly what he does but he’s very trustworthy.
  15. I’d add that to Stevens is GREAT at putting the ball in the hands of his best players regardless of position. Putting role players in spots they can succeed, too. Those have...not been strengths recently at IU.
  16. I think realistically IU retains most of the candidates to return on this team except TJD and maybe another transfer. He would bring lots of excitement and probably recruiting success — easy to sell Heyward/Smart/Tatum/Kemba/Brown development and NBA experience. So I’d expect all that to mean IU would be a tough out next year and a solid tourney team — maybe a 7-10 seed. After that it would be much less easy to be specific but he’s one of the guys who puts you in plenty of national recruits’ minds, is up against Juwan Howard on the trail for the Midwest’s best, and brings a willingness to learn with strong schemes on both sides of the ball. We’d shoot many more threes and expect even bigs to step out and hit when open. He’s one of a small # of guys where I’d EXPECT IU to genuinely compete for a final 4 pretty quickly — compete for, not guarantee they’d make it.
  17. I’ve tried to make this point a lot, but there were signs before the hire that Archie’s reputation outpaced his actual prospects. I know he was the hottest young coach but the folks who make those lists like stories, and Arch was a good story: his time as a player, family of coaches, beat his mentor on a run to an Elite 8, so on. This is one of the reasons I would value advanced metrics and discount tournament success a bit. His best offensive efficiency at Dayton was in his first two years; as offense got better across the country his diminished relatively. His best defense there was good, but his reputation far outpaced the performance of every season but 2015-16 on D. Even the team that went to the E8 ended the year at 42 on Kenpom. It’s hard to get that far into the tournament without climbing quite a bit because you’re beating tournament-quality teams.
  18. Yeah you can do “interim” if you have good reason to: NBA coach handshake agreement, fired the last guy on short notice, had to change late in the hiring season, etc. I don’t see why you go out of your way to do it. Even if you have a big fish on the line and you’re waiting for their season to end, you can just keep your current coach.
  19. I’m enjoying the Mussel-mentum on the board.
  20. With you on those preferences.
  21. Yeah I’d guess that’s the rough upper limit? If they’re really targeting someone with P5 HC experience who has a resume worth targeting...
  22. To me the move — this year or next — is to negotiate the mitigation. “We‘ll guarantee $5M as long as you’re looking for jobs.”
  23. on the bright side, we might know something soon. If he’s staying we’ll see the Dolson statement backing him, oh, the day after they lose? And if it’s quiet that might mean contract buyout negotiations are happening?
