Track record on reclass small guards is poor. Probably a different story if they’re reclassifying “back” to their normal grade year than jumping a year but I’d stay away were it up to me (not specific to Askew, just mean in general)

Wondered this too, believe he played a few minutes in an ISU loss to Drake 2/2/22 while DeVries coached. Wondering if he might have more than one year of eligibility left; he played 2 at ETSU but he should have his JUCO year back due to the Pavia decision and he only played 4 games for ISU in ‘21-‘22. Feels like you could get a waiver there.

Great post — I share your curiosity about the guard situation, strongly assume Enright is your 3rd guard/backup PG and we’ll have two new starters. Dix makes some sense as a fit, believe he played with Tucker in AAU, but I defer to you that Creighton makes more sense. Would be a little worried about defensive ceiling with Dix at the 2 depending on what surrounds him.

True and yet I think he’d be your 3rd PG, if Enright is your backup/spot starter, Gabe would be behind him. Maybe DDV wants him; who knows. Enright has a year of eligibility so he could be in the long term plan but my guess is he might want something more immediate.

Of course it’s possible that the time difference and schedules have made things difficult but this seems illustrative. Would be hard to blame Zrno for at least considering his options — portal and coaching carousel mean the options have changed since his commitment. Plus he’s gonna play roughly the same position as the coach’s son, although they play it differently.

Using Torvik, two top 40 offenses at Drake. Two top 40 defenses (top 10 this year at WVU and one at Drake). Teams are pretty good at shooting and avoiding TOs. Very good at defensive rebounding, looks like he typically eschews the offensive glass. Has twice had top 30 eFG% defenses. Four of his six Drake teams were top 50 in FT%. They’re gonna shoot lots of 3s, thank God (44th in 3P rate this year, and recent DDV teams have shot 39% or more of field goals from deep).

Other than his son I believe they were not from Drake.

Just one guy’s opinion but at the time I was disappointed in both Arch and Woody’s hires, though I could squint and see the vision. If it’s DDV? I’m actually excited.

He built a top ten (Torvik) or fifteen (Kenpom) defense out of whole cloth in his first year in a power conference. Some folks like to be miserable!

My polite read on it is that McCollum’s resume is very pure, almost without failure once he got it rolling. DeVries has been in a more challenging situation and has outperformed expectations, has high D1 experience, but no “wow” breakthrough S16 at Drake or whatever.

There’s a pattern. May got an extension. The December rumored Otz extension got signed and backdated (?) and reported upon. Brownell is gonna get paid. Wonder if Scott Drew got some more dough to stay (we won’t know as easily since Baylor is private). It’s DeVries’s turn. McCollum may get more out of Iowa than he would’ve otherwise…
