Yep, and if anything their luck/reputation/poll status has outpaced their actual quality lately. That’s why as much as I think he’d be an upgrade, there are many other options I’d explore beforehand.
-
Yeah there are some non-Stevens guys who might require that. I like Oats too, if Bill Self wants to move on (why? And also I’m a little worried he’s losing his fastball), etc. But of the candidates on anyone’s hot board, one guy is gonna require that bill
-
IU is not going to 10 years, 9.2M/year for anyone other than one guy this offseason, IMHO
-
Its nice that he’s not a sitting head coach; he won’t have any scheduled press availability until after the season for BOS and can probably otherwise “no comment” on background or just not respond otherwise.
-
Also, Stu, I think you’re just overthinking Jerry here ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-
Yep, terrible fit, his career timing and IU’s timing don’t make sense to me, wears out his welcome everywhere. Also elsewhere in the thread Tyme suggests he thinks Cronin and Cig are similar temperamentally and that’s what Dolson’s looking for. He’s definitely wrong on temperament and I think he’s wrong on the second part two (even setting aside football/bball differences, at IU especially).
-
Oh and he’s got them in red / crimson, houndstooth a la Bear Bryant, and so on
-
As for what GMs are doing post-deadline, probably some of the below: 1. Coordinating ops like scouting with coaches 2. managing waiver/roster stuff 3. self-scouting 4. draft scouting 5. long-range planning 6. Considering offseason plans Also, my guess is Stevens would get a ‘25 ring if he left in March and Boston won it all.

…unless it’s the candidate who’s not a sitting coach. In that case I wonder if it could be lined up a little earlier; e.g. whenever IU’s played its last game. Also one other Otz vs May thought: there’s probably some philosophical or implicit defense vs offense (respectively) preference. Not that Otz can’t coach O or May D, just that they have relative strengths.
-
I like Otz, and @AZ Hoosier had a good response. I think before this year there were more folks discounting what May did at FAU since it isn’t a high-level conference.
-
Yeah also he won’t literally have his guy until there’s a signed MOU or contract or whatever. I buy what Jerry etc. say is going down, but we did this for a day, give or take 12 hours, in ‘21.

I think there are some jobs — or were, even SEC football powers actually make smart basketball hires now — where an AD can basically make the football program work and be seen as a success. Once upon a time, if they needed to hire a basketball coach, they might really lean into connections from their own prior stops and a search firm’s work, and end up with a guy who got a favor because the firm owed his agent and he had a passable resume. IU isn’t that job and IU doesn’t have that kind of AD. Search firms are able to help with things like backup checks, maybe keeping some comms out of FOIA-susceptible places, maintaining plausible deniability, etc. So yeah even if Dolson is laser-focused on one guy, and they’re more-or-less communicating without intermediaries, there’s some reason to hire a firm.

Good morning to Brad. Give us a call when you have a minute.

Not sure if anyone recalls the Harbaugh-to-UM cycle but national and SF media insisted it was made up BS and connected UM people kept beating the drum that there was a real chance and mutual interest. Not perfect parallels but…
-
Yeags if it’s 10/$92M when the FOIAs come back in 6 weeks

If this happens after the football hire and the season we just had, we need to discuss the height of the Scott Dolson statue. The seated Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial in DC is 19’ tall, we should start there and work our way up.

They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread

Guys…Georgetown handled the end of the Ewing era much worse, if I recall. I think they didn’t say anything and he just coached out the string on a much worse team. -

I’m curious about the timeline for all of this. I think we could get some sort of formal release today, but wouldn’t be shocked if this drags into next week as agents and lawyers hash out money and wording. Even beyond that, IU still has a month of the regular season left, and then add at least a week for the B1G tournament, more if they rally or make the NIT or something (I don’t expect it). Woody was hired 13 days after Archie was fired. Cignetti was hired 4(!) days after Allen was fired. With the trade deadline in the past, if it’s Brad, I do wonder if we’d hear formal reporting about meetings or negotiations, unlike last cycle, just from the standpoint that he could theoretically line up the job before mid-March (and surely Dolson’s goal would be sooner is better). Obviously I know that trustworthy folks here will be able to make reference to things that can’t be reported yet, but a long timeline like this is somewhat unusual in general, and at IU in particular, at least in recent years. -

Yeah Stevens is one of the…idk, ~10 best living and working coaches if he returns to the sidelines? Not just in college, at any level. And he’s 48. Feel like top 10 is even somewhat conservative, and many of the ten if you listed them aren’t in college. -

I think it boils down to a couple things: 1. Lots of credible rumors that he really does have a special place in his heart for IU. How much weight do you give that? (You can include things in this one about proximity to family if you want too.) 2. IU made an offer last time. But how close did they actually get? 3. As explained elsewhere, Celtics are in flux AND he got a ring. They’re being sold, they’re about to get expensive and will probably have to make painful decisions about who to keep, etc. Between all that and the possibility that IU can pay more (and maybe he really wants to coach!), what matters most? How you answer those impacts how you think about his chances to take it. -

Where’s @BGleas, does he still have some Celtics connections? -

I would guess the leak is not from the coach’s side, all things considered. It doesn’t give him any leverage. I understand the “why is THIS the story?” thought, and I am not an insider, nor an agent/lawyer (though we have some of each group here, so chime in if I’m wrong). I believe the rub is that if he’s fired, he gets the contract, I believe at $1M/year until he’s paid what he’s due. If he retires, he forfeits what he’s owed. My guess is that he DOESN’T want to be fired, DOES want the whole pot of $, and thus wants to have it both ways. So the sorts of delays we’re living with are probably negotiations to amend the terms of the separation such that he gets less than he’s owed but also gets to claim he’s retired. And given his status as “one of our own,” it’s probably best for the program to work with him if the number negotiated is reasonable. -

Of course I believe you but was Brad supposed to say “yes I want that job that has a sitting coach?” Cmon goodman
