  1. “Archie didn’t work out” — you’re right, but he also never had an elite o or d at Dayton, was coasting on one tournament run, and a recognizable name. Some of us were worried before Indiana State buried us under a barrage of 3s in game 1 of his tenure!
  2. Not going to argue about it but some of us were like foaming at the mouth to watch Nate Oats in a big job. Every time I try to make the case for certain mid-major coaches someone decides that guy doesn’t have the Special High Major Voodoo and tries to argue with me but if you know what you’re looking for you can have a degree of confidence that Oats and May and so on are special before they ever make $1M
  3. My point is that Brad will have responsibilities thereafter — draft scouting, filling end-of-bench seats, etc. — but that’s probably the date after which I’d get serious about the possibility of coaching again if I were an NBA exec
  4. Haven’t seen anyone mention it: NBA trade deadline is 2/6.
  5. Others have probably made this point but UK is a good lesson that IU Could just find a good college basketball coach and be a top 10 team next year. Pope has had good teams at BYU but wasn’t without some questions.
  6. Seven years if track record of knowing things, for starters
  7. Yeah I really think it just depends on results and optics; if they’re 6-3 coming into a home game vs Maryland, I don’t think it changes whether he’s the coach next year, but it probably doesn’t look great to can him. Now, if you lose an ugly one at Northwestern, maybe that’s the tipping point. You’d still be 5-4 but it would maybe save an ugly scene with a program legend at home, and you could make the case the team still has something to play for but needs new leadership. My hunch is the win last night might have bought him a home game unless Tuesday is embarrassing, though.
  8. I would guess there was a lot of groundwork laid this week to potentially pull the lever when the time is right. Line up the interim, who’s the 3rd assistant after that domino, make sure the president and other key stakeholders (BoT reps, money folks) understand. Time could’ve been right this weekend if the team no-showed again last night at OSU. There’s lots of frustration with Woody on this board and elsewhere, but it’s still a bad look for a program legend to face a hostile environment at home games. Even if he wants to keep coaching, in some way you’re protecting him a little too if he isn’t embarrassed by Dusty May, booed, chanted at. So sure, part of the plan was lining things up for when/if you pull the lever during the season. The much bigger problem is who’s the next coach, though, so don’t get too hung up when we win. For what it’s worth, I wouldn’t worry that there’s really anything that can save him beyond the year. Seth Davis’s newsletter this morning said “there is a widespread assumption in the sport that this will be Woodson’s final season in Bloomington.” You don’t have to like Davis to know he’s plugged in. Also note Stevens’ non-denial last April to Davis’ suggestion that he’d be interested in returning to coach at IU: https://www.si.com/nba/celtics/brad-stevens-addresses-rumors-of-leaving-celtics-for-college-coaching-job (Two tidbits from that piece: 1. Funny that Steven’s talks about “getting over the hump” and 2. Boston got over the hump) If Stevens is option A, B, and C — and you don’t have to think he’s likely in order to think that Dolson will make him say no — then the timing isn’t very important; I doubt he’s coming back to college for a random B12 job. Heck, as USPS noted, IU looks like the only premium job coming available this cycle, so even if it’s not Stevens, timing may not be crucial.
  9. Yeah I want my team to win. I don’t think there’s any reasonable way he’s back next year, quit worrying about that, but they’re not firing him at 5-3 in B1G. Root for your team, even if the coach isn’t going to be there in 60 days
  10. Leal has limitations but there’s something just *chef’s kiss* perfect about CMW turning in desperation to a guy who probably deserved at least a little more run every year of his tenure
  11. Also funny when one of the guys out is a net negative (though maybe a good long-term prospect) who’s replaced by a better player and this is still the excuse
  12. Yeah I think you can both be right
  13. Ok I have previously said the Clif Marshall sand pit criticisms were baseless, and he wasn’t/isn’t to blame for IU’s (seemingly very normal) injury luck. However, basically the only thing Tyme has convinced me of: Marshall’s approach is not adequately preparing IUBB for the conditioning required for hoops.
  14. I know you’re asking rhetorically but in my experience it’s not uncommon for rich, powerful, and/or dumb folks to go through life without the basically level of awareness and decency required to do that (or keep your yap shut if you haven’t done that).
  15. Based on a bunch of posts earlier today it appears some posters EITHER don’t know the Lore of the ‘21 search, or they love to be wrong. This isn’t exhaustive, but let me work backwards briefly. A few months after Woody was hired, the most trusted news breaker in basketball, Woj, reported IU had been willing to make Stevens a big offer: https://sports.yahoo.com/report-brad-stevens-turned-down-to-70-m-offer-from-indiana-to-stay-with-celtics-222404520.html You don’t get to the point of years and salary if it isn’t serious. The top line $70m number matched what plugged in, trusted posters had said contemporaneously during the search. Up until the hiring news broke, the search had been very quiet, much like Dolson’s later revenue sport search would be. But if you knew who to trust, you knew there was a slow burn to a clandestine meeting in FL, then it fell apart. No one has to believe me, but I was here, I PM’d some with the sources folks around here, and if you’re around long enough and pay attention, it’s obvious who among us is 1) BSing, 2) not sourced but here for fun and opinion sharing, and/or 3) who actually knows things occasionally.
  16. People believed it because he said it, it wasn’t some made up talking point
  17. I’d still be happy to have him but I think the ship sailed to the point that I would guess Brad’s more likely.
  18. UM is Kenpom #10 and a B1G title contender in year zero if anyone still thinks I’m wrong that Dusty is self-evidently a good coach. We could’ve had that.
  19. The most plugged in OSU fans are constantly mad about the state of their 1) OL coaching, 2) strength, nutrition, and conditioning, and 3) player development. Would really bet on notable improvement, current IUfb staff plus (formerly) high ranked players is a beautiful stew, maybe especially on the OL
  20. Very detailed commitment coverage, quoting lots of HS scouting reports: https://mgoblog.com/content/hello-tyler-morris A follow-up, right before his first season: https://mgoblog.com/content/2022-recruiting-tyler-morris Seems like a great representative of his team, and his teammates seem to like him: https://mgoblog.com/content/fall-football-bits-doesn't-know-if-qb-competition-decided was supposed to be M’s breakout WR star this year but their passing game was embarrassing: https://mgoblog.com/content/preview-2024-wide-receiver Was a consensus top 100 recruit who’s gonna absolutely make himself some $ in the slot at IU. Great route runner, very quick, too speed is great (see the Rose Bowl TD), easy to find great quotes about his hands.
  21. Yeah, teams with highly regarded true freshman have had a hard time getting top tier QBs — Nebraska last year with Raiola, Michigan this offseason with Underwood coming in. Michigan got a pretty good player but folks still think Underwood will usurp him at some point during the season even if he doesn’t win the job in camp. I wonder about a significant up-transfer; pretty sure MSU had a guy like that as a backup this year. Someone who’s played in FCS or something?
  22. Only accrued stats in 3 games in ‘22, less than the 4 game max for a RS…unless he played special teams or simply didn't make a catch in a couple others, wonder if he’d have two years.
  23. I am making an argument about logic and you are making an argument about feelings, footspeed, and avoiding the point, bye
  24. Yes, totally serious, you said IU would never beat an elite team without a mobile QB, but lots of elite teams lose to non-elite teams all the time when the non-elite teams have relatively stationary QBs. You are arguing for a preference: mobile QB over immobile one. Basically everyone shares that; if Peyton Manning had Mike Vick’s legs he’d be better. I and most others share your preference. But your logic (x can’t happen without y) is not sound.
