Corruption in College Basketball
chicagoHOOSIER replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
That is a good point. And that is probably part of the mission. But is that the only mission of the NCAA, to make as much money as possible? I agree that if NCAA athletics were hemmorhaging money he would already be gone and rightly so lol. But is money the only measure when so many dark stories involving predatory sexual child abuse and child rape by individuals high on the pecking order seem to pop up now with what is becoming almost normal frequency, and then minimal investigation continues to show a pattern of directors of NCAA member programs routinely covering for predators hunting children for sex in their offices on campus? And child rape is not the only very serious serial crime continuously uncovered now by the FBI and other organizations. Right now no big story in the news suggests any pressure applied to the president of the NCAA. Should he be asked to take a more active role, and at least consider ways to address the growing scandals uncovered during his administration? Or is this none of his business? -
Corruption in College Basketball
chicagoHOOSIER replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Thinking of the numbers and magnitude of the scandals under Mark Emmert's NCAA watch, at what point does he begin to feel the heat, given his hands-off (underststement) approach to the following seemingly unprecedented scandals and then also the many relatively ordinary (for lack of a better word) NCAA scandals he has presided over? Jerry Sandusky PSU FBI serial molestation and coverup scandal UNC academic fraud scandal Larry Nassar MSU FBI serial molestation and coverup scandal Adidas FBI player payment and kickback scandal While I have not researched the history of NCAA scandals, off the top of my head it seems the recent frequency and magnitude of scandals involving NCAA programs might right now be at an unprecedented very high level. At what point should one begin to ask if the farmer is tilling the land properly when the ground has become so recently fertile for giant weeds? Is he in over his head? -
"remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to thy mercy remember me for thy goodness' sake" (insert MJ dunking over head poster HERE lol)

Somebody mentioned how awkward that series is going to be now, and I just had to laugh because what is the alternative to embracing that or any other challenge, even the ironic ones, or maybe especially the ironic ones? After the presser q and a addressed Sean w/Archie, and Archie answered the way he did, I am inclined to think Archie is able to direct the focus, and to teach that skill demonstrably to our guys. -
That job can't possibly be fun anymore. It's not even going to be fun for quite a while for a squeaky clean replacement who had absolutely nothing to do with any of this.

Maybe so. I am watching along with you. From this outsider's perspective I just think that there are way too many separate enormous problems coming to light within that athletic department right now for Izzo to survive all the pressures the many different outside and inside forces are going to be hammering away at that university athletic program and basketball program specifically for a long time to come. At some point I expect either Izzo to make the choice for himself to step down, or his new boss, or his new boss' boss, or the Board of Trustees, or the FBI, or the NCAA, or a lawyer or a group of lawyers representing the #metoo movement or an individual or a class action, or a judge or whoever else is out there with another story or stories we have not even heard yet, or the general public, or the media but most likely all of the above are going to force this issue. Way too much going on.
-
I strongly believe the Dr. scandal, the sex assault coverups and all the ensuing investigations and Jerry Sandusky level magnifying glass heat that athletic department is going to continue to face in the years to come are going to force the university to ultimately put Izzo out to pasture. I don't see any of this going away. Some of this, the FBI stuff is practically just beginning.

Sean Miller caught on phone
chicagoHOOSIER replied to Milldawg12's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
My thoughts exactly. Everybody blames the NCAA for bringing the hammer down hard on our heads over the phone calls but what really happened was IU paid Ice Miller a ton of money to recommend we shame and punish ourselves to the greatest degree possible just so we could be sure that in the end the NCAA did not add more punishment. That was a terrible strategy. We paid them a lot of money for them to simply hand us a gun and advise us to put the gun to our head and pull the trigger. And we just said OK and did it. -
P(00)p and shame all over your 3-year plan. repent. A lesson for the youngsters. The majority in a group can very often be wrong. Use this wisdom to your benefit.

Umm that. Defense that had a good team going "WTF?" Halfcourt offense forcing fouls on a team that is great at not fouling. Not The Reds like some suggested we have become. Nice expected win against our little brothers in the State of Indiana. Expected win against a back end of the Top 25. Shocking when we lose these games. Not shocking when we win them. I am extremely happy for Coach and the team. They know they are good, and now they are learning they can win and win big. Neutral court wins, and wins on the road.

Yeah. I was hoping for something between where we are now (very, very bad) and where Bob Knight's first IU team was in 1971-72 (pretty good.) Our roster even after the guys jumped to the NBA is still full of class after class of 4 Star recruits. I never did see the cupboard as bare this year. At a bare minimum I was expecting this season to be as good as Kelvin Sampson's first season. I was not expecting anything like Crean's first season because, you know, many reasons, so I never would have expected this season to compare to that one. And I was also expecting more than "but we came within 10 points of Duke," the "good loss" that is the highlight of the season. That reminds me too much of Indiana football. I did not expect to lose to Indiana State at home, or anywhere else for that matter. That one was a shocking loss. And they didn't just barely beat us. They ripped us a new p(00)ph(0)1e. At Assembly Hall. And I did not expect to get our (@)$$es handed to us by Michigan no matter where we play them. I guess we have different expectations. I did not expect that either. I wish some of the younger posters on the site could have lived when IU was a perennial powerhouse. My expectation is that we will become that again, a dynasty.

Wikipedia IU basketball rivalries
chicagoHOOSIER replied to chicagoHOOSIER's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Somebody really went to a lot of trouble now marking every Illinois game in every Indiana season page as a rivalry game. They tried to do that with Illinois football too, manufacturing a U of M/Illinois football rivalry page, etc but Michigan fans shut that down. It was a pretty big laugh for a short time on the U of M boards. -
I expected a lot better than this.

Wikipedia IU basketball rivalries
chicagoHOOSIER replied to chicagoHOOSIER's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Hey, nice to see you too. -
IU's classic rivalries are Purdue and Kentucky, yet the Wikipedia page lists Illinois as a rival equal to Purdue and Kentucky. I edit the page from time to time removing the Illinois reference, but some Illinois fan changes it back every time I edit the page. Anybody want to help try to get that reference eliminated for good?

Awesome prayer. So much so that I am now giving thanks for it. And dear God, please help our basketball team and our coach.
-
Thanks, Nat, and anybody else praying on my behalf. Just a really bad situation. About as bad as a renter situation can get. Not fun.

Hi all. Extremely bad situation with one of my renters right now. Would greatly appreciate some prayer offered up on my behalf by the prayer warriors in the thread. Many thanks for your consideration.

Petition for permanent IU script football helmets
chicagoHOOSIER replied to Magnanimous's topic in Indiana Hoosiers Football
Just keeping the discussion going, same as you are. Nothing more. Somebody petitioned the A.D. to eliminate all other uniforms in favor of the cursive script. I am stating my opinion against that. I feel strongly about that. I like the Block IU Trident, the Block I, and a lot of the newer helmets. I don't think the cursive script does Indiana University justice. I think it is lazy, and even boring. I have a right to that opinion. -

You are completely changing the argument by using a different font and including clothing other than official game day uniforms. We are talking about official game day uniforms and IU tradition. -

Was it Mike Davis who introduced the cursive script to Indiana basketball uniforms? I'm not talking about warmups either. I am talking about uniforms. -

Cursive script is what you might select as your font for some small time promotional tool like a matchbook cover with your business' name on it when you are working with an extremely limited budget. And you would only select the cursive script if you had very limited options and your other limited choices were even worse lol. -

OK now you are really reaching lol. Seriously, that's your argument? Again, Block I = tradition IU Trident = tradition Indiana cursive script = something else not even close to that level, and not even trying very hard The more I think about it, I don't even like the cursive script Indiana, especially when it is placed next to real IU traditions.
