They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
8bucks replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Glad you mentioned it as I will try to watch later too. Not what you asked, but after listening to the BP podcast i posted yesterday, he was asked how long he would continue coaching and he said he did not see himself coaching in his 70s. So, since he turns 64 in March and would not coach into his 70s then we would have 5, maybe 6 years with him. -

I think there were at least a couple reasons. 1) they shot well all around and that kept them in the game. Close game at home should always help. Making shots, especially 3s really help. 2) woody was far more energetic while coaching last night. Several times while the ball was in play he was a few steps out on the floor instructing. Teams feed off a coaches energy. At least once he was about 5’ out on the floor which I have not seen before. -

He will be great in Indiana. He might not be so well received in the Chicago Public League. -
Tier 1 has to be guys that have won consistently (regular top 20) and have made deep NCCAT runs.

Could it be that he ratted them out, saw that it had little impact and said "well when in Rome..." -

What cheating did he do? I know he lied to the NCAA about having a recruit at a cookout (seems minor, even the lying part). What were the others? -

Found this podcast from last year with BP. Wins & Losses with Clay Travis: Clay Talks With Bruce Pearl on Apple Podcasts I am only about halfway through but first half has been great. He mentions how he was poor until the TN job and still shops the clearance racks because that is what he always did. Talks about moving from each of his programs and how he is always all in when at a school but when he feels it is time to move on, it is hard but he does what he thinks is best. Good listen. -

Hey, this is what we do best. We used to be a great basketball program and we as fans loved knowing we were always going to be a contendor. Now, we excel in coaching search rumors and are probably one of the best programs in the county at this (the rumor talk not the actual hiring sadly). So don't get in the way of our calling, our passion to dream big. If we cannot hire well, doggonit we should still be able to dream the impossible dream without people trying to bring us down. -

Hopefully BP is not this cycles, Billy Donovan or Brad Stevens. Be real BP. -

Seriously? That is awesome! -
I kind of wonder if Pearl decided that gray area was fine after the Deon Thomas incident where, if his side of the story is correct, Illinois offered DT $80k and a Chevy Blazer. BP recorded a call with DT where he seemingly acknowledged that offer but the NCAA only gave a slap on the wrist to Illinois (1991 post season ban). I was reading an article this morning about this and it had allegations about BP suggesting he was also cheating but those had seemingly no meat to them. Perhaps BP saw that he had a rival caught red handed and instead of them getting the hammer he got banished essentially from D1. Once he got back it could have been, "when in Rome, do as the Romans".

Well for those who don’t track all the back channel stuff like you and I, did we make any back, side or front channel connection with Pearl? -

So under Woody, there are 12 staff. Looks like he kept 5 from Millers but that includes Cliff and Tim Garl. So he kept 3 from a coaching staff of 9. I think it is a good idea to keep 1 assistant from the prior staff if they can help keep top players. Walsh was a late add/keep and Steven Surface had been overseeing basketball operations so I don’t mind keeping someone like him to help with the transition. -

he was on the staff of Miller AND the Pacers? I do not think that is correct. https://theathletic.com/4546018/2023/05/23/indiana-calbert-cheaney-basketball-staff/ or did you mean Walsh? If so yes he was. So that is 3 which does not seem like most but I could be wrong -

Calbert was with the pacers. He also hired a couple of development guys. And Walsh was not an assistant under Miller. -

He kept one assistant, one staff and the strength coach. Not sure that’s most. -

If a younger guy, like May, had these results I think we might be more lenient because he is not nearing retirement. -

Gallo overplayed their PG to take away the outside shot and the PG then backcut. Gallo recovered and forced a little turn around/reverse shot that the PG made look easy but was a clever cut and shot. I think he only scored 2 points in the second half and for awhile Gallo started applying pressure ful court. The full court/token pressure was when we made our run and seemed to speed them up a little and get them out of rhythm. So while that was effective, I am sure Gallo was a bit gassed and the backcut was the perfect play to run. After that basket there was a TO and Woody lit into Gallo. I thought Gallo's d was what helped get us back in the game and the chewing out seemed excessive but I understand you sometimes do that with leaders. I think it was shortly after this Gallo stopped guarding full court and the short lived rally ended. Not sure if related but I remember sayig to myself at that TO I hope Woody does not change things now that the game is close. That was the only change i noticed. -

I do not disagree. I think the points that @Ngw7183 was making about whether donors are going to be willing to shell out big money for a buyout would likely come with strings attached to hiring someone who is more of a sure thing. We have not done the sure thing hire before and like you described with one donor willing to contribute a lot of money if we could have hired BS last time, I think this is a similar point that NGW is making. Sure he may be one of a few who think Woody should stay but the rest of his post makes a strong case for why some big money donors may become willing to act but only if we are able to land a sure thing. -

It seems some only read your last paragraph and have missed several good points. We are looking for some big $s to come in and pay a large buyout and those same people should be asking what are we going to do differently this time to ensure we get it right. Perhaps, if the wheels fall off completely the rest of the year they might feel a change is necessary regardless but if I were being asked once again to put up big money for a buyout I would want more certainty that we get it right. For Dusty to fall into this tier he would have to have an incredible run in the NCAAT which is an almost unfair expectation but is probably necessary for him to pass up some older, more established coaches who have proven over time they can build a top 20 team year after year. -

While you don’t overlook giving up a 20 point deficit at the half the defensive pressure adjustment here was a good call. Can it last? -

Rabby made a good comment about needing to have success with HS recruiting and some gap filling with the portal. If you recruit that HS level well you raise your floor. -
