The season is getting to that point where it's not really "early" any longer. The way the team is playing we're about 1/4 way through. Good article though.

  I don't mind promises either, as long as both parties understand that there are always exceptions.  I knew exactly what you were talking about while reading through your post.  I guess it's part of taking the good with the bad.  However, you always need a GOOD leader on your team.

Throughout the recruiting process, Yogi says, his future coach promised him the starting point guard spot from the outset of his college career.

  It's easy to identify leaders or even players who want to develop leadership qualities.  The team should be doing off season workouts and/or non-basketball team building exercises that provide ample opportunities to identify leaders.

Alford coming off a screen to nail a 3.  I've been watching old IU games, to keep my sanity, and watching Alford and then Cheaney coming off screens to nail jumpers was a thing of beauty.

I'm not sure if KU had problems with academics but they've had several players with "extra benefits" recently.  I don't want that in our program.  I understand the coach can't catch everything but he sets the tone for the program.  No thanks.

Thinking outside the box. I would also encourage Hoosiers in or near Boston to go to Celtics games in your candy stripes and start chants. If your in a different NBA market go to the games when the Celtics are in town and do the same thing. I think Brad Stevens returns to college ball. If he's at a big time program after having success in the NBA he'll be able to sell recruits on that. It will make recruiting a lot easier for him.

  Mixed signals from the same coach...

  Yogi is not a leader.  He hasn't showed leadership on or off the court during his time at IU.  However, he should step aside so someone who wants to step up and become a leader can do so.    That's another flaw I see in the Crean approach to coaching and being a "leader" of young men.  I believe in the 2010-2011 season he was constantly asked about leadership in the post-game press conferences.  His response was consistently, "we need everyone to step up as leaders."  That might be true but there is almost always a pecking order with young men 17-23ish.    If your older players aren't going to lead they need to keep their mouth closed and allow a players that are natural born leaders to get this team going in the right direction.  Nothing personal against Yogi but he is just not an effective leader.

  Great article..   Zoom out a bit.  How often did we see half the team playing zone while the other half play man to man last season?  It's as though the players are playing defense like the coach is struggling to defend his job status.

We played our solid 10 minutes in the first 10 minutes.  Something major needs to happen or this team won't make the tourney.
