NCAA Women's Bball Transfer Portal
TTT replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Women's Basketball
The transfer portal should increase the IU Ladies Calendar Schedule and Roster Wall Hanging Poster Sales since there may be several player names to learn. -

Question: Do the IU Ladies players in the transfer portal and actually transfer to another team 1. Sign the alumni locker room bulletin board before they leave 2. Come back at a future time after graduation from their colleges and sign bulletin board 3. Or lose that (is it a privilege) privilege. (there would be some beloved IU Lady names missing). Transfers: (Some players spend the last one, two or three years and others spend the first one, two or three years with IU Ladies). (Or discontinue the locker room bulletin board signings)……personally, I like it. NIL and other reasons the transfer portal has made everything so so so different. (not sure how to even say it). -

Avery Howell 5’11” is a good looking player and in high school was a 5 star at pretty high 97 per ESPN. She will have many options. She would be really good for IU. She can make shots 3 ball 39.9%and fgs 43.1% and make fts 82.9%. 7.5 points per game on USC team as a freshman is pretty good. Get Phoenix S. as well. Then, IU needs athletic quickness and some size. -

A Kate Koval/ND might be nice. -
(2024) - Chloe Spreen to Indiana (Finally)

Here is a positive….being an Indiana player as she was in high school she should be and at the college level able to and develop and shoot the ball or score when given opportunities at efficient level….And develop into defensive tough and probably stay and complete her career at Indiana close to home. T. Moren may be very good for her. IU Ladies still have very high character players and highest of character coming in (and high character coaches) = high character people in IU Ladies basketball program. This is a good thing. -

My point is obtaining a player like Phoenix S. should be smooth and efficient commitment and signing. (This player seems like a T. Moren type player with upside). Spreen is ok currently to set on the bench with future to be determined depending on improvement and adaptability. (and what else is being worked on in the portal). Maybe, on a near afternoon T. Moren will be surrounded by 5 or 6 or 7 tranfer portal players to introduce that part of the 2025-2026 version of the IU Ladies basketball team. Unless it was coach driven the IU Ladies who are currently in the portal except Garzon (who minutes was not issue unless it was the way she was assigned to play) I don’t see any of them getting more playing time unless they drop to a lower conference level program or a lesser level program. It will be interesting if there are any who withdraw their names from portal or where they end up and how successful any are. -

Are you saying the programs are listed by favorite being on top left when looking at it. Could it be listed according to date of visit or meaning nothing at all? (especially if she chooses for example bottom right). My point is this is a good player but not an elite player. And there is much playing time available on IU roster, facilities, recent seasons, and number of fans, coach involvement in summer coaching on national level vs the other programs listed. Doesn’t show much respect in the sense of it should not be this hard to get this caliber player (though a good player) to come to IU. -

It reads Garzon has placed her name in transfer portal….no contact….could mean she has designation or agent handling contacts…..which could mean after further consideration she completes transfer or she withdraws transfer and returns to IU. -

Per T.G….Cal 6’3” player Marta Suarez has entered transfer portal ((no contact). Several 6’3” players in transfer portal. Maybe, IU Ladies will eventually get something. ( she would probably be a good one). -

Among Spreen, Stotijin and other (crickets), maybe IU Ladies will get some kind of a small guard. (Stotijin did have some decent Nertherland stats and would be a good one). Then is IU Ladies still apart of the Merkle tour? Things including recruiting have always seemed to be pretty private in IU Ladies basketball program. Just seems like there is way to much scratching and clawing to get what they get. (there have been a couple of exceptions but not hardly any do top players make a fast straight line to IU). -

Confused. Thought Phoenix Stotijin was committing to IU. Now, I see IU Ladies are no more than her top 5 list. Unimpressive. Have to fight for this level of player to much. A player of this caliber should be a lot easier to get for IU. -
There is much validity in that…..especially given the coaching, support and respect at IU she has received. Credit T. Moren and staff for craftily pushing her to be the player she is. There are many situations and circumstances with players (and coaches) that fall into these kinds of categories. (T. Moren discovered Garzon from a contact in Fort Wayne, Indiana coaching AAU ball and zoom calls.

Besides NIL. Garzon has always been a very serious competitor. This is a result of recruiting inadequacies. She probably wants to plug into a stable team that is a championship contender. And IU Ladies look like pretty much a new team. Does anyone withdraw from transfer portal not including players that coaching staff did not give any incentive for players to come back (unwanted players)? Grass is not always greener on the other side. T. Moren pushed Garzon to expand her game. She also pushed Parrish to expand her game beyond just being shooting 3 pointers. (A higher level ability level team may allow Garzon to play better to her strengths) rather having to compensate for team weakness. -

T.Moren can make Spreen a defensive specialist. Then she can make a shot here and there (if she can become enough). -

Yes, realistically none of the transfer players would not command much NIL except for Garzon. I was talking about their feelings/thoughts only. -

Speculation: were some IU Ladies disgruntled by the amount of NIL money dumped into the men’s program….one thing that men get more but was the discrepancy just to outlandish for some IU Lady players to accept including the ones who just finished their careers. -

In the current climate of college sports if someone legitimately offered me like a 25% to 50% to even double the salary I would consider changing jobs…..if intangibles checked out (which possibly could be a deal breaker). Is the grass always greener on the other side??? -

Indiana University is one of the best situations she could have been in from many at the university. Along with her coach and staff. -

5 including incoming freshman. Money? It will be interesting to see how the IU Ladies transfer portal players workout….downside, lateral, upside. Out of six players there are going to be winners and losers. Also wondering about who was coach driven to transfer vs those who were player driven and neutral departure.
