One real reason is that it looks like the B1G was definitely the best conference in the country. If we're in any other P5 conference we're probably easily in the tournament. DeVries also put together probably the worst possible roster to compete in the B1G and still should've been in if not for epic choke jobs to Nebraska and NW. He also had to put it together completely on his own with no assistants or GM which has now. So he now knows what he needs and has the help to get it. This season was basically a scenario where everything that could go wrong went wrong and it will never happen again. We've hit bottom essentially. That's what the optimist would say.

Couldn't get past the S16 in a decade. Couldn't even sniff the tournament his last season despite a stacked roster. He had a few good years and plenty bad ones. Not even remotely comparable to Cal who won a title and took UK to a handful of FFs and a couple Elite 8s.

We didn't run off a successful coach. They did.

I guess he gets another year but would probably be wise to pull the trigger now. Has zero recruits coming in and I can't imagine he'll have $22 million to spend again.

I think he probably knows what he needs. The question is can he get them. Dusty had more NIL and was a much more attractive coach to come play for.

They were much better coaches this season and certainly did a much better job constructing their roster. We all called out how poorly constructed this roster was last Spring. We knew you couldn't win in the B1G without size. Everyone knew it except for the man getting paid $5 million.

How are fan expectations unrealistic? No one was expecting a FF or B1G title this season. Most just expected to make the tournament and hopefully win a game. Very realistic with our NIL and see what first year coaches like McCollum, Lucas, McMillan, Odom etc have done.

You kind of hit the nail on the head with the last paragraph. IU has definitely had bad timing when hiring coaches. There have been good coaches available that we could've had at certain times but we didn't have an opening. But you have to be willing to create the timing and thus far they've been unwilling to do so. Hopefully that changes going forward.

It's possible to put together a Sweet 16 type team for next season but imo we're gonna need $15-20M in NIL. If we only have $10M we're in trouble and could be looking for a new coach a year from now. Not expected to be a good portal class and competition will be fierce, especially for bigs. Tough road ahead I think.

Agreed but it's a cut throat industry. You want a killer not a nice guy.
