They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
go iu bb replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
It's interesting how you say hiring a mid major coach like May would likely fail based on the history of the majority failing, ignoring exceptions yet when it comes to keeping Woodson and building the team through the portal you say it will likely succeed based on the exceptions, ignoring the history of the majority failing. -

It'll be mostly done after next year with the exception of a few who get medical waivers and such. I can't wait.

Woodson is staying because that's the best we can get? jk More likely, he means a player is planning to stay. MR or MM, probably. -
IU Mens/Womens Swimming and Diving

Not IU: ASU destroyed the PAC-12 championships. I believe they won all but 2 events and set multiple records. They are so good, and it's not just Marchand. I don't know if they tapered more than Cal for this meet. Probably did. I guess we'll see at the championship meet. -

I have my doubts about whether or not May can succeed at IU. What I don't doubt about him, however, is that if he doesn't it won't be due to lack of effort. I don't think Woodson will ever be willing to put in the effort. -

Retaining Woodson says we don't care about basketball. Not having a press conference or at very least an official statement says we don't care about the fans. Do you think that's the message Dolson and IU want to make? I doubt it. They have to release something but it'll probably be after the game today or when they lose in the B1GT. -

They've been ranked in the top 5 for pretty much all of this season and last, including multiple stints at #1. Won the B1G last year and this year. Won the B1GT last year and probably will this year. This will be their second consecutive 1 seed in the NCAAT. Would I want IU to do that? Umm, let me think about that for a second....hell yes I would. Are you kidding me? You'd rather we avoid that because it's Purdue who is doing it right now? Keeping Woodson would certainly remove the possibility of being like Purdue. Face it, under Painter Purdue has had much more success than IU during that same time. Sure, you can scoff that they haven't won a NC but the fact is that IU's last one was back in 1987. 37 years. In another 5-10 years, unless a miracle happens and IU wins another one despite the admins efforts to keep IU basketball terrible, it won't just be the recruits who weren't born when IU last won one, but also their parents. -

How many players do you think come go to a program (IU or any other school) just because of the program? Not many. Most go to play for a certain coach. It's been like that for a long, long time. That's why there's recruiting. Do you think most of Knight's players came because it's IU or because they wanted to play for Knight? (hint: it's the latter) That's not a bad thing, it's just the way it is. Now, being at a certain school can very much help but ultimately the very large majority of players choose to go where they go because of the coach. So from above, if some of May's players followed him it would help because they're already familiar with him and his system while he's familiar with their personalities, strengths, and weaknesses. Pearl bringing his recruits would be better because they are players recruited to play in his system. This is better than Woodson because their systems are better than his which it to just pound the ball inside. They also seem to know what they want in a recruit while Woodson just seems to look at the ranking and think he'll figure out how they fit later. -

I'm not either but I'd take him over Woodson for next season without hesitation. -

Because the chances of the results being what everyone wants are very low. The chances of doing it consistently, year after year, are pretty much 0. -
We should grab him. He'll fit nicely in the starting lineup with Reneau and Sparks. We'll just need 7 more bigs after that to round out the rotation.

IU likes to use the reverse as a way to keep coaches too long: past failure is no indicator of future failure. -

Had 1 or 2 transfers? Sure. No one is disputing that you can add a few good players through the portal which makes your team better. What people are doubting is if you can build the majority of your roster from the portal and be successful? The majority of teams that have a high number of transfers haven't done well. Even this year, Woodson was using the excuse 2/3 of the way through the season that this was a "new team" that was "still getting to know each other." That was with more returning than likely will be this next year. -

I'm going to have to disagree. If we got a ball player who was from Mars that would be huge, world changing news. I would care. -

The fans are getting more and more impatient because IU has hired terrible coach after terrible coach. The fans are noticing it. Uninspired hires like Woodson won't generate a lot of love or patience. When he was hired, there was a collective "WTF!?" across the fanbase. So when the coach that no one wanted started showing signs that he can't cut it, the fans want him gone. Especially after Miller and the last 20+ years of combined incompetence with more bad seasons than good seasons. What's going unnoticed is that it's only the vocal fans that are getting impatient though. Many more are just losing interest. This will catch up to IU soon if they keep f**king around keeping bad coaches too long only to replace them with an equally bad or worse coach. That's their MO. Since Knight they've hired: Assistant coach with no head coaching experience and not even much assistance coaching experience. They caved to the players with this hire. Has done terrible since then so more time wouldn't have helped. A HC that was in trouble with the NCAA at the time they hired him. Great coach but this blew up in their faces. Given a 5 year show cause. Should IU have kept him despite that? Crean. A weird guy that was a total spaz. Up and down. Alienated HS coaches with his approach. Did terrible at his next job so more time wouldn't have helped. A mid-major HC. Looked like an okay but uninspired hire at the beginning. Definitely didn't create a lot of excitement. Then he turned out to be a terrible coach. His personality should have been obvious during the interviews and he should never have been hired. He continues to struggle at his next job, is that also the fault of IU fans? More time wouldn't have helped. An old NBA assistant coach with 0 college coaching experience. An ex-player that no one except the administration and a few big dollar donors wanted. Has 0 recruits for next year and many spots to fill. You think more time would help? Which of these coaches were better hires than they seemed? Which should have been given more time by the fanbase? In what way did the fans make these coaches as bad as they were? The AD's office makes the hires, not the fans. Stop trying to shift the blame of their incompetence onto the fans. The fans just see how bad the hires are. -

I wasn't saying you didn't hate it, just that my own negative feeling wasn't strong enough to call hate. But it was definitely a "WTF, this really sucks" moment when announced. -

Yeah, that is probably a good assumption. He's been training with someone else (I don't remember where, west coast/CA, I think) since early in the season. Hasn't competed for IU. What's weird is how both he and Ray don't really give answers when asked. Such an odd situation. -

I don't know if I would use the word hate, but I didn't like the hire at all when it was announced. Matta and Fife gave me reason for optimism which quickly faded. Every year he's had a bad losing streak and had to recover from it. Every year underperformed preseason expectations.
