Dude, you keep repeating this which simply isn't true. IU fan expectations aren't even the same as they were 25 years ago, much less almost 40 years ago. By the time Knight was fired, expectations had already started to drop but they were still high. Today, people would be very happy with a string of years similar to the ones Knight had to end his time at IU: ranked every year, safely in the tournament, winning conference record, and finishing near the top of the conference. The early exits in the NCAAT were disappointing but at least they got there every year, usually without worry. If it remained in that status, then people would get restless but the expectation out the gate isn't to be competing for national championships in year 1 like you make it seem. What people really want to see are teams that consistently compete hard. Enough with long losing streaks every year and multiple blow out loses.

My guess is that the assistant coaching search is taking longer than whomever decided they wanted to announce them all at once thought it would take. Maybe we're negotiating with the other 2. Maybe we're striking out. Whatever it is, it's taking a while and probably longer than it was thought it would take. Fans start to get antsy from lack of announcements so they make a change to how they're going to do it. That's my guess.

With all the money they'd still be getting through legitimate processes, it'd be practically impossible to look at someone and say they're getting paid under the table. Before you sometimes could but even then it was hard for the NCAA to prove it. Now? Impossible without court orders to access their personal bank accounts for forensic accounting. As for the fair market value, "Your Honor, that autograph is worth $1M to me. Are you going to try to control how I spend my money while also hurting this player's livelihood?"
