Candidate Thread: Brad Stevens (Boston Celtics)
madmax replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Yeah, and I understand that argument. My counter is that 1. Saban did that when being pressured by reporters. Brad has done the same thing but has also done it completely unprompted by anyone. Listen I would LOVE to be wrong about this; just the way I’m feeling. -

I would buy it more if Brad hadn’t literally just doubled down on his previous comments by mentioning the rumor about IU yesterday or the day before. That’s like 3 denials in the last 2 weeks, including one that was totally unprompted. I hope that I’m wrong, just having a hard time buying it. -
Gotta figure Beard will destroy his legacy in Lubbock by going to UT. Maybe he could just come up north instead.

Dakich being happy is the worst possible news. Both generally, and with this situation.

Brad Stevens press conference when he is announced at IU should consist of 3 words: ”F——— THE PATRIOTS”. Mic drop and walk off court. -

Consider me completely oblivious to any skeletons being in Beard’s closet. I refuse to give Goodman a click. Anyone know what this might be referring to?

East side of Bloomington is cool... if you’re a snobby rich alumnus who eats quinoa and kale and look down on anyone with less then a Masters..(40% kidding).
-
So you’re saying Becky Hammon is in fact not coming to IU?
-
Brad literally reiterated yesterday that his interest in the job was just rumor mill stuff. The only way that I would even see a slimmer of hope would be if Boston decides to completely clear house and tank before the trade deadline, but there is zero reason to believe that this will happen.

No search firm and Dolson seems to be playing it super close to the vest. It can be frustrating, but in all actuality it’s probably the best way to handle a hiring for this type of job and if nothing else I respect Dolson for doing it this way.
-
That’s fair. Forgive me if I came off brash or like an @$$, I’m just tired of this search.
-

Nope. I’ll hold my nose and support them, but there is no IU guy that I want. But to seriously suggest Ed Cooley as a candidate for this job is nuts. And I don’t mean this to be insulting to you-he’s just pretty clearly nowhere near the quality candidate we *should* be considering and able to get.
-
And your point is? Of course it’s better than not making it... that still doesn’t mean we want to hire a coach whose ceiling is the round of 32 and missing the tournament 3 years running.
-
Maybe. But he hasn’t made the tournament in 3 years and has never won more than a game when he’s been there. No thanks.

I’m sorry. I can’t and won’t do this again. Dude is just trying to get his claws into us again. He’s just toying with our fan base. Resist the urge, hold the line.

Please no

Honestly if it were any other site I might give it a tiny little grain of possibility, but coming from that board I’d say 0%.
-
Yep. I mean someone earlier mentioned how in the last 3 hiring processes how none of the coaches (Sampson, Archie, Crean) were thought to be the favorites or the most talked about candidate. I would imagine that the same thing is happening hear.
-
That's fair. And I'm exaggerating a tad with it all... but I mean maybe he was trying to get Cheaney on the new guy's staff? Maybe it wasn't an interview for HC, but for an AC gig?
-
Actually the more that I think about this the more that it makes total sense. Dolson has already agreed with his next coach to a deal. Dolson realizes that many alumni and donors want an IU guy despite the fact that no former player really meets the right criteria. Dolson realizes that he needs to interview an IU guy just so that he can say that he did. Dolson sets up a Zoom interview with Cheaney knowing that this interview will go nowhere. Dolson intentionally leaks that this meeting happened so that the fan base can hear about it.
-
Good point and makes me think of a HOT TAKE. An interview was conducted with Cheaney today via zoom in order to pander to the IU alums desperate for a coach with Hoosier ties. The only reason this was done now is because we have an agreement with our next coach who will be announced soon... Christopher Michael Beard!
