He's a totally different player than TJD but we've got virtually no drop off in terms of rim protection/interior scoring. Considering TJD holds many career accolades, that's how you know Ware is special. We're very very lucky to have enjoyed this level of big man play in back to back years, especially with Reneau also taking a big step forward. Mr. Derik Queen... you watching?

2024 PG Daquan Davis to Florida State
Home Jersey replied to Gnet550's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
I think this is a great discussion... Not sure where some get the idea Davis is likely to be some kind of benchwarming scrub or that he NEEDS to be able to contribute right away to warrant a scholarship offer? Our spring 5 star has been struggling, so how much can you really project any freshman's ability to instantly contribute? If that's the criteria to get a fall scholarship offer, that's certainly a strategy. His ranking (4 star, borderline top 100 player) is similar to Cupps, but of course stars and rankings don't mean anything. Obviously the staff needs to make that evaluation for themselves. That is true, always. If they make an offer, great! If they don't offer, curious why not, since there's so much smoke. For the sake of discussion... let's say he can contribute from day 1 at a roughly similar level to Cupps - is that not worth taking based on our current roster? Let's be clear... Davis is not Grant Gelon. He's not Jeremiah April. Tim Priller. Is it: Not being loosey goosey and giving away scholarship offers to everyone and their mother? ... Or ... could it be that the staff has a strong preference for the spring recruiting cycle and want to put him on the back burner until they can evaluate portal options first. They don't want him to feel like he's on the back burner so they sit on the offer to keep him engaged/build the relationship/continue evaluating, etc. If it's the latter, I think it's fair to question why, given the current roster construction (especially at a time where your starting PG is injured and you've got basically 0 backcourt depth), you'd not offer a player with a similar amount of talent as Gabe Cupps and then try to find a stud guard in the portal to play over him. We've got one open scholarship sitting unused right now and there's sure to be turnover in the offseason. We do not need to worry about hitting some sort of limit. We do need to worry about having only 3/4 guards on next year's roster (does Leal come back / get mins... is that a good thing?). Newton is coming off an injury and hasn't played in basically what, 2 years? Gunn could transfer. It's not unrealistic at all that you wind up with only Cupps, Gallo and (hopefully) Newton on the roster after the season. How do you feel about running with no other guards? So... if they don't offer - is it because the staff doesn't think he's their type of player/kid - they can't develop him/don't want to invest in him? That's perfectly valid and the right thing to do, obviously. Do they think he's got bust written all over him? If so, okay... maybe they're right, maybe they're wrong. Something to keep an eye on. If in said hypothetical - they pass on him and he goes elsewhere, does nothing... no IU fan will ever notice/credit the staff for this, despite complaining about it at this moment in time. If they're wrong, and he goes elsewhere and is able to contribute - only/just as much as Cupps is for us this year - or an impact player by his sophomore year... it's fair to question why the staff made their assessment. Is it their strategy/prioritization? Character related? We'll never know the full story. That said, I'd hope a kid with DaQuan Davis' talent and accolades vs. the competition he has played with/against... would be a take for this staff assuming no character concerns (which we've got no reason to believe exist) when we're in as dire of a situation as we are in our backcourt. If they're not confident they can develop a kid with his talents, you've got to wonder why. He was committed to Providence so presumably no character/academic concerns that would disqualify him considering they're a small catholic school. This is a pretty long winded way for me to say... please offer the kid already Woody! -

Wage a tenacious battle against complacency...? Seems clear there was certainly a discussion and agreement on a certain level of investment/commitment! -

"Wage a tenacious battle against complacency" I mean, as a Hoosier, you've got to love this guy instantly. Before he even took the mic I'm ready to run through a wall for him! Lol -

That press conference was pretty awesome, to be honest. Super excited about the direction of travel for our athletic dept/major programs -
Meh. It would be great if we can keep Sorsby, but at what cost? His NIL market value is now clear, is it worth that for a QB who may or may not fit your system? Sorsby looked good at times but personally wouldn't class him as a first priority/"must keep" player. I could understand just wanting a clean slate for the rebuild.

I'll fully admit, I was out of the loop for the first ~1.5 years of Dolson's admin, and I've never actually bothered to look into how Fred Glass ended up leaving, because I was just happy he was gone as a student during his tenure... A few were bemoaning Dolson - one in particular that I can remember going so far as to say Dolson should probably not even be allowed to make this decision/be in the same room as the people who do... He's hired Woody and seems to have got "the" right guy for us in football. About as close to a homerun hire as I think we could hope for. I am pumped to see where this program is at in a few years. Being decent at football in the new B10 will create a ton of $$ opportunity -
Honestly its frustrating that the local press/beat writers are pushing this narrative - after 6 games - that because we haven't been hitting 3s, we're somehow climbing an uphill battle compared to everyone else (basically what this reporter's fully phrased question is implying). Makes me question a little bit how much they like Woody tbh lol. Not that I care about that. Woodson has previously commented about him not wanting to put pressure on guys that they need to be making 3s because he believes they can win the game in other ways. And if the 3s fall, great. But we won't live and die by them - which I consider a good thing. It has not looked to me like they've been told "do not shoot 3s" to me as much as that's just not the primary objective of our offense. Will we hopefully see more 3s taken/made as a natural byproduct of improving over the course of the season/getting better about the details, like how in the Harvard game we could have shot 20 3s instead of 16 3s if people checked their feet more closely. Defense and rebounding are my bigger concerns at the moment. Yes shooting needs to get better too of course.

Just the tweet itself is a bit misleading IMO. The "..." includes "you ever thought about that? That could happen. I'm just saying, everyone puts so much on analytics. Aye, maybe we might be that team to make it. The bottom line guys is, we're sitting here with 1 loss, some wins. Got a lot of work still on our hands." After where the quote finishes, he says "We haven't made the 3 point shot, but we still are winning and maybe the 3 point shot will come around, I don't know. We work on them every day just like we do Free Throws, shooting 2s, rebounding the basketball. Doing all the things you're supposed to do in terms of preparing for a game and getting better. So all we can do is hope that they put the ball in the hole when they shoot the 3. And if they don't, then I gotta feel like they're going to go down and get some stops and rebound the ball to give us another shot at it again." More of a "the game's not all about analytics" comment than a "we're not going to shoot 3s" comment.

Zander Diamont is going on quite a twitter rant this afternoon about IU's branding mistakes/misplaced investment over the years, etc. He's not being overly critical but he is basically jockeying for a check lol. Someone said Zander for president because he said going back to the oval logo would kill recruiting. He said "I want nothing more than a consulting role. I am running my own business and am in no way qualified to be on the coaching staff. ... With love!"
