General Coach Candidate News
HoosierFan1994 replied to JaybobHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I think Woj broke it. There was a lot of smoke that Saturday morning that Indiana was going to make an announcement that day. Just like the Sunday Evening/Monday morning last week regarding Archie. Nobody is going to break it here, but there will be some smoke. -
Purdue, Ohio State, and Louisville are my guesses based off previous offers. What if IU gets a Beard or Beilein? Hard to believe he would leave then.

Billy Donovan was my number 1 lol. I thought it was Alford until he said after UK beat them he wasn't the coach. I knew then IU had their guy. I thought it was Bennett or Miller the morning of. -

Osterman had a good Tweet about the timeline of the last 3 searches. If IU follows the same timeline, I think the earliest we hear something is Thursday (I don't think tomorrow because the Women play). IF it's Beard, it may be longer. Crean and Miller's season ended about a week before they took the IU job. Sampson was about two weeks. -

I went back to their 2017 Hot Board. There were 4 guys in the top 5 the entire time : Steve Alford, Tony Bennett, Chris Collins, and Archie Miller. Miller was #5 on their last hot board before the hire. Maybe it's possible that the chatter stopped because there were ongoing talks. I hope that's the case with Beard. He is #2 on their list. So far Beard and Beilein have been 1/2 the entire time. Woodson has been in the top 5 most of the time as well as Musselman. -
For sure. I don't think anyone knows what is going on behind the scenes.

Question for those who know...can a player still use the facilities at IU if they are in the transfer portal? Obviously its 50/50 if he comes back but I was just curious.
-
Everyone relax. It's not ideal but can we blame him? Rabby says he is open to returning as long as he fits with the new coach. He wants to see his options. If these kids can play right away without transferring I totally get it. That's college basketball now.

I have zero clue who the next coach will be. But what I do know is if Indiana gets the right hire, the new coach could easily be the 2nd best coach in the Big Ten and soon maybe the best. Right now Izzo is the top guy (I think we'd all say he's a top 5 coach in college basketball). I'd put Howard at number 2 right now but the jury is still out on him I think. Painter is probably top 25. After that you have a bunch of decent coaches, but none that can lead you to the second weekend and beyond (Holtmann, Gard, Turgeon, Underwood, the Franimal). Piekiel is probably in that group too. I'm stunned the B1G has only one team left but I really thought only Michigan and Illinois had a shot at the Final Four. A lot of overrated coaches. IF Indiana hires one of these guys, they easily become I think a top 3 coach in the B1G (Beard, Beilein, Musselman, Oats, Altman, Drew, Matta, Enfield) -

Rabby says he wants it supposedly. Honestly, I'd take him. Another one that wins in March. -

AND (you people are missing this point in his tweet) he inaccurately reports Matta failed a physical. It's coming out that is NOT the case. I wouldn't listen to him. -

Yeah Piekiel lost stock after that crap. He’s done a great job but they had that game won. -

Yes. That's why you have to take a grain of salt with some things with the tournament. It's a crapshoot. But it's a trend when a coach continues to do well (60-70% winning percentage). -

It's for sure a small sample size. But he is on par with Stevens. I mean he's won. He upset Purdue at Little-Rock, Elite 8 in year two, Runner-Up in year 3 at Tech. Would've had a tournament team last year and won a game this year. The thing I'll add about Beilein over Matta...Beilein may be older but he's in better health and he's had more recent success. Matta's last decent team was in 2013. He hasn't recruited since 2016-2017. Beilein had Michigan in the NCAA Finals in 2018. He last recruited in 2018-2019. -

Yup. 65% overall. Also made a mistake-Beilein is 63% without one of his best runs. So on par with Matta, Beard and Stevens. Tony Bennett is 64% overall and 53% if you take away his best run. -

I think a quality we all want with the new coach is someone who can win in March. I don't care about November. IU was as high as #3 in the 2016-2017 season and they flamed out. I saw someone post NCAA Tournament records of some of the candidates on Twitter. I'll include Stevens just to show how he is in comparison. I also looked up Sampson, Crean, and Miller's NCAA records before they came to IU. Chris Beard 10-4 71% John Beilein 26-13 67% Brad Stevens 12-5 71% Archie Miller 5-4 56% Tom Crean 5-5 50% Kelvin Sampson 11-12 48% The saying is you don't want to hire a coach based off one run. I feel the last two hires were based off one run. I took away each coaches best tournament run and here are the winning percentages: Beard 63% Beilein 60% Stevens 64% Miller 40% Crean 20% Sampson 39% I know the tournament is a crap shoot but I'd love Beard or Beilein (age concerns me). It's obvious both are major upgrades over what this program has had. They are also on par with Stevens as far as the tournament goes. Yes, he was my number one choice but Beard and Beilein are good options. I didn't get to appreciate IU basketball in the 70s, 80s, and 90s like most of you. My first team I can remember making a run is the 2002 team. 2012, 2013, and 2016 teams made the Sweet 16. I just want this team to get back to making deep runs. Let's not over look things. It's all about March and how far you go. -
Candidate Thread: Chris Beard (Texas Tech)
HoosierFan1994 replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Rabby said today that the chatter is Beard, Beilein, and Woodson (in no order). Said Matta seems to be out. Said it's just a rumor about IU calling Bennett. Also said Musselman and Fife are being discussed. He made it seem like Beard could leave for the right price. -

Beard, Beilein, and Woodson seem to be the top 3. I'll give whoever it is a chance. Won't be crazy about Woodson but outside of Alford he's probably the best "IU guy". Beard and Beilein will be massive upgrades and should give Indiana a chance. -
My thoughts? I think the Big Ten has a LOT of overrated coaches. Izzo is probably a top 5 coach and Painter top 20. Jury is still out on Howard. If he can get Michigan in the Final Four I'll say he's a top 20 coach. Outside of that, who else from this conference is a top 20 coach in College Basketball right now? I think Holtmann, Underwood, Gard, McCaffery, and Turgeon are decent coaches but I don't think they can make a deep run in the tournament. Hell, Pikiell might be the 3rd or 4th best coach in the Big Ten right now. That's why I'd be happy if IU got Beilein or Beard. Would probably be the second best coach in the Big Ten.

I'll believe it when I see it but I would be thrilled if Indiana got Tony Bennett. They would win. He's a top ten coach in all of college basketball right now. -

I was getting ready to say this. I think Archie was “announced” on a Monday (I was there). Word leaked Saturday. If this is all true I expect to hear something today. -

I have no idea, but I’d be surprised if his friend ND Kendrick called it a “home run” hire and he ends up transferring.
