Coach Curt Cignetti to INDIANA... Forever and Ever, Amen!
Lebowski replied to mamasa's topic in Indiana Hoosiers Football
Yes. It'll be his team to build. IU used to be known as smash mouth during the Mallory days. A team's identity is all about the HC, not the institution. Program builders turn the identity into an institution and IUFB has never truly had program builders. -

Is Osterman just making a list like most of us or does he actually have an inside source helping him? -

His entire 16 year HC career only had three losing seasons. He's had only two conference losing seasons, finished in the top half every other season (the majority being top 3). He's got lengthy experience as a HC. He was OC at one of the most prestigious college football programs in the country, one of those seasons being undefeated. And, most importantly, he knows the area, being from the Midwest. I think this would probably be one of the better resumes to ever coach at IUFB. I could be mistaken of course. But overall he's got a good resume and I'd be fine with this hire. Especially if he turns us around to consistently win six games a year and finish in the top half of the conference. Regarding his record at Miami, I'm assuming his non-conference schedules were against P5 opponents and give him a pass on those losses because I would assume he'll be able to bring in or develop P5 level talent. I briefly looked over a few of his past seasons and last year he beat Northwestern. That tells me if things are level with talent aka Jimmys and Joes he can hold his own. He wouldn't be my first choice or even second or third, but he's actually got a decent resume for IUFB standards. -

I'm ok with a Chuck Martin hire. His resume is actually better then folks are giving him credit for and he's got Midwest roots. It's a kind of hire that tells me Dolson is taking it seriously. I'd prefer others, but I would certainly understand it. -

What's a ridiculous amount? Chris mentioned the figures 7-9 million here. If any of that is true that makes me wonder if we could actually pull off landing someone currently coaching at a P5. I was just using Lance Leipold as an example, so keep that in mind. But he currently is getting paid 5 million a year. His buyout is 12.5 million. https://www.si.com/college/kansas/football/lance-leipold-contract-confirms-big-commitment-to-football-program If 7-9 million is actually being discussed that puts things in a completely different playing field. Or does it? I would think that would, unless of course I'm completely fooling myself about it. I mean these numbers would expand the coaching search, right? I'm trying to not get too excited about this and stay grounded. Because we're talking IUFB here. -

Serious question here, do any of y'all think IUFB could land a coach already coaching in a P5? Someone like Lance Leipold? -
Hopefully Dolson has had some time to rethink this. Especially after the whole Coach Prime dust settling. I don't think it's a good idea to bring past players of a program that is one of the worst in college football history. We need to get a coach with a track record and demands a culture of winning.
-
If any of this is even remotely true, I think we'll get some quality coaches to at least pick up the phone if Dolson calls. I've listed a few that I think would do wonders for the overall program in another thread. And my worry is the coaches I've listed probably wouldn't even consider a program like IUFB because of various reasons. All of this stuff you've listed being some reasons. This is very promising rumor information. I hope it's all serious and truth. Thanks for sharing.

If Dolson doesn't let CTA go it tells me that the department doesn't give a poop about football. In a profound way.

He talks about his age in the interview. I agree regarding already being at bigger programs. But he was in the FCS for 3 years and now he's winning in the FBS. It might change some things for him. I think the bigger programs just completely shy away from FCS coaches in general. That's just a thought I'm just pulling out of my ars. I have no data or anything to back that claim up. I felt the interview was more a 'hey, look at my resume' to the bigger programs. -

Bigger offers from programs with a culture of winning. JMU has that culture. So I just don't think IUFB would be appealing to him. Just my opinion. But man, I'd feel really good about him leading the program if he were here. -

Curt Cignetti is on Pat McAfee Show. He just basically upped his stock 10 fold. No way he'll end up at a place like IUFB. But man, that's my guy. -

Both coaches in the conference that are leading their divisions are more than likely moving on to a P5 program after this season. (CTA hasn't been let go and still has one more year under contract. Hopefully that changes and IUFB is in the market for a new HC for the 2024 season.) One coach is 41 as you mentioned here and the other (Curt Cignetti) is 62 years old. Of these two coaches, I would prefer the older for various reasons but the main being his overall resume of program building. A seasoned vet so to speak. Having said all this, I'd be floored if either one of these coaches answers the phone if Dolson were to call. -

If we actually do that, I'm ok with it. We're talking about IUFB here. Finishing .500 would be freaking awesome with this group and CTA would deserve credit for the accomplishment of that kind of winning streak. I'm skeptical about winning out though. We'll see how this all plays out. So far, I'm enjoying this game! -

I don't think I'm arguing per se. If I'm coming off that way, my apologies. My point I've been trying to push is that IUFB isn't a program that a lot of people on here think it is and Tom Allen actually isn't as bad as folks think he is, historically speaking in the grand scheme of things. I am absolutely NOT saying "we should just be satisfied" with any of this. I just know IUFB has always been where it is for 136 years and we fans should keep that in perspective when having these conversations. Trying to have this kind of understanding helps me look at the overall picture with the state of affairs. It helps me realize that over half the coaches we fans would like to lead IUFB probably isn't going to happen. It helps me stay grounded so to speak. It lets me understand that the next HC for IUFB will probably have the same type of struggle the 30 other HCs had prior to him. Coaches have a window/lifespan and CTA is no different. If progress isn't happening and jobs are not up to the expectations then he should go. As of right now, I'm leaning he should be let go. Which is too bad because that would mean we just fired the 10th most winningest coach in IUFB's history. A coach that showed so much potential and had it worked out and had a winning percentage, not going anywhere because he considers coaching IUFB his dream job. I will however change my mind if IUFB goes bowling. Because that shows, for me at least, he met expectations of his job and showed progress. Finishing .500, again, for me at least, is an accomplishment and I'm happy with that. Tiny steps for me with this program. Finding a coach that constantly does this and wants to stay at IUFB is a unicorn, but a man can dream that unicorns exist. -
I feel your pain. LOL! Go Hoosiers!

Coaches win percentage and win-loss record after Bill Mallory .473 [69-77-3] Tom Allen .417 [33-46] Terry Hoeppner .391 [9-14] Bill Lynch .388 [19-30] Kevin Wilson .361 [26-46] Cam Cameron .327 [18-37] Gerry DiNardo .229 [9-14] -
You have literally just described the entire 136 year history of IUFB. Lol. Aside from the gauntlet first half of the schedule, letting go of Bell and making a hard decision on the starting QB might have been the change that started the upward swing. We'll so though, we're talking about IUFB here.
