Important injection to this discussion: The NCAA requires to field 18 sports to be a D1 program unless something changes. This means we can ax up to six sports and still field teams. In my opinion these ones have to be kept from both historical, facility and logistical perspective: Guys 1. Men's Basketball 2. Football 3. Baseball 4. Men's Soccer 5. Men's Swimming Girls 1. Women's Basketball 2. Volleyball 3. Softball 4. Women's Soccer 5. Women's Swimming That is 10 must keeps. That leaves 14 expendable sports and we have to keep at least eight of them to be within NCAA requirements. These are: Guys 1. Wrestling 2. Men's Cross Country 3. Men's Track and Field Indoor 4. Men's Track and Field Outdoor (yes indoor and outdoor are counted as separate sports among the 24) 5. Men's Tennis 6. Men's Golf Girls 1. Water Polo 2. Women's Cross Country 3. Women's Track and Field Indoor 4. Women's Track and Field Outdoor 5. Women's Tennis 6. Women's Golf 7. Field Hockey 8. Rowing Looking at this logically we have two more women's sports than men's sports to help offset Football and Title Nine. As much as Rowing looks out of place, it is also a great Title Nine sport with 20 scholarships which is most of any team outside Football so it is most likely safe. Field Hockey also is among the higher women's sports with 12 scholarships so as bad as the team is, not sure we can justify from a Title Nine perspective (unless things get really bad and then this is probably the second most likely sport to go for women). With the new course and Women's Golf having only six scholarships I don't see this going. Women's Tennis is one of the few all or nothing sports believe it or not, so IU cannot award partial scholarships (other sports with this rule are Football, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball and Volleyball) so that is pretty safe with eight. Women's Track and Field awards to many scholarships again to make up for the loss from a Title Nine perspective with 18. This leaves Water Polo as the only sport I see IU can reasonably justify axing from a women's perspective. It is only eight scholarships and is the only sport the Big Ten does not sponsor (only IU and Michigan play Water Polo among Big Ten teams) and IU fields in a different conference as a result (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation as the vast majority of Water Polo teams compete out west). This is also an extremely expensive sport to field as IU is often flying out west to compete as that is where most of the teams are. If any sport is going to get chopped on the women's side it's Water Polo. From a men's perspective, scholarships are less important, other than taking at least as many away as you did from women. Assuming we chop water polo, we need to make it up by axing at least eight scholarships on the men's side. Wrestling is really bad, but it is a huge deal in the Big Ten and has new facility so unless we dump Field Hockey as well I don't see this going. Track is 12.6 scholarship's for Men, so unless we dump a second women's sport outside of Water Polo's eight, no reason to send this packing. Men's Tennis and Golf equal nine scholarships so these are probably the first men's sports to go if Water Polo is cut. In conclusion from a numbers perspective the first three cuts would probably be Water Polo on the women's side and Golf and Tennis on men's side, dropping IU of three sports and 17 scholarships putting us at 21 sports. This would leave us with nine men's sports and 12 women's sports, If things got worse, the next round of cuts would probably be Field Hockey (12) and Wrestling (9.9) which would take us to five sports axed and 18.9 scholarships for men and 20 for women which is basically equivalent and would put us at 19 sports fielded (one above NCAA minimum) with eight sports for men and eleven for women and basically in the same spot Title Nine wise. This is as far as I see IU going unless something drastic happens that no one even wants to think about.

IU Men's Soccer News and Notes
Aaron replied to ccgeneral's topic in Other Indiana Hoosiers Athletics
Unless they make the Big Ten schedule double round robin instead of just a round robin like normal or move it to spring. Lot of unknowns right now. -
Publicly he loves Indiana (and a lot of him still very much does) but privately he has acted like he has gotten to big for Indiana which is a shame. He has the wrong people in his ear right now and is convinced stardom is better in a big market. Needs to listen to different people. Here is the Inside The Hall Podcast in which Scott Agnes explains in the nicest way possible that Vic has turned into a real diva: https://www.insidethehall.com/2020/07/08/potb-335-a-look-at-victor-oladipos-decision-to-sit-out-with-scott-agness/ We can be forever grateful for what he did at IU and also acknowledge he's let fame go to his head. Both can be true.
-
That's a bit harsh. I am not an 'insider' per se but I have talked to a couple people who know he duped the Pacers last week big time. Vic is definitely a good guy at heart and I will forever appreciate all he has done for IU and put the money for the lounge. Its also true he has people in his ear now and is not making the most mature decisions when it comes to handling this situation and several others.
-
I am not usually since I don't hear a lot, but I do know a couple people around the Pacers and I do know he has become a bit of a pain to deal with and duped the team with this decision. He has the wrong people in his ear right now and is not making the best decisions showing loyalty to the State that has made him who he is. We can still love Vic and I do for his time at IU and how he has given back for the lounge and he is a great guy at heart. He is just not good at handling fame and has wrong people in his ear now.
-
Sorry but its true. I love Vic and he is no different from most NBA players and I will be forever be grateful for his time at IU. With that said it does need to be acknowledged that he has let fame go to his head a bit. It does not change the fact that he is an IU great and has done a ton for the university with his donation to the lounge. I have zero problem with Vic not playing and many are not. The way he handled it though was truly egotistical and self serving. He lied to both the Pacers and the local media all last week than leaked it to the National media late Friday afternoon without telling Pacers first (and yes I know for a fact this is true). No one can say that is a good way to handle an announcement you are not playing.
-
That's for sure. From everyone I have talked to (and I have spoken with three people who are somewhat close to the situation) Vic has turned into a bit off an @$$ and has no appreciation for basically Indiana (IU and Pacers) making him who he is. Very sad that one of IU's own has turned out this way. I think we can still appreciate what he did at IU and be forever grateful while also acknowledging he has let the fame in the NBA go to his head and has no loyalty to Indiana anymore and only himself. Speaks to larger issue in society with how some people handle fame and is very unfortunate.
-
The problem here is there is a backstory to what Vic did. Its not that he chose to sit out which is understandable, but the manner in which he did it. Vic said Wednesday he was taking it day by day and would decide later. Then Kevin Pritchard went on JMV Thursday and made it sound like Vic would play as far as he knew. Vic then leaked the next day that he would not play to Shams Charnia who is a national writer for the Athletic rather then telling team first AFTER telling local media Wednesday he would decide later (nothing changed in two days so he was not truthful two days earlier). This caught the Pacers off guard and forced the Pacers to release a statement four hours later supporting the decision after doing some PR scrambling. This is what has led to all the anger and speculation that he is not happy and wants to leave Pacers which may or may not be true. Either way Vic did not handle this well. Everyone fully supports him not playing, but the manner he handled it was very diva like and unprofessional to leak it to media first rather than tell team (and yes Vic directly told the reporter he was not playing directly rather then informing team, it was not leaked through a third party like what happened with Andrew Luck).
-
People in Indy not happy about Vic and think it means he will leave after next year. JMV was especially hard on him on radio Friday. The reality is we live in a time where athletes are prima dona's and won't play under less than ideal conditions. Its just current society seeping into sports.

If this guy is as good as advertised he should be our shortstop next 2-3 years depending on his age. Jeremy Houston is decent defensively but has always been a weak link with the bat, so Espalin should be able to beat him out easily I would hope.

Guess people's word means nothing anymore. Dunham basically said in an interview that he would come back to IU if not drafted so I went with that, but guess in this day and age what anyone says is irrelevant. I am not mad at him and wish him the best and I am sure got a better deal then expected. Its a big loss ala Justin Smith but survivable if no one else goes. I just wish young people understood it is important not to say something you don't really mean later if you are not 100% sure. Its a reflection of young people in our world today and we just need to learn no matter what people say until pen goes to paper means nothing. I don't like it but can live with it. I also don't like this relatively new rule for the draft where you can go after your sophomore year if you are within 45 days of turning 21. It used to be you had to have gone to college for 3 years period. Now you can often leave after 2 and with many kids being held back a year they are often 21 by the summer of their sophomore year which changes recruiting a lot. College Baseball used to be the mark of stability and it is still relatively stable compared to other sports but getting top guys often times for 2 years now instead of 3 is a big change and is often the difference between graduating and not graduating before going pro. I think with many of these guys never making it all the way to the pro's, this rule change didn't do the athletes any favors for their later careers without degree in hand (I know they can go back and finish but its a lot harder). Richardson is in the 21 sophomore boat and I assumed he would not sign but now with Dunham (who did give IU three years) we have to wait and see who really comes back and who signs a free agent deal. My earlier post was premature I suppose. The only freshman from this years limited season who contributed and I know will be back is Hunter Jesse who is a stud in the making. Realistically anyone else could sign like Dunham buts most if any probably will not. However, I will update again after we really know who is coming back.

No Hoosiers taken in abbreviated draft, so IU should return most if not of all of roster from last year with seniors given additional eligibility this year. Other Big Ten teams lost a bunch, so its possible IU will go in as Big Ten favorites if we don't lose anyone another way (unlikely). If Covid does not wreck college athletics next year, IU is on pace for its best overall year since early 90's when all 24 sports are put together. Lets hope for best in this regard.

IUBB - 2020 Off-Season News
Aaron replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I actually don't think this is a big deal for how good IU is at all and in my mind I always thought this was possible. With that said this new phenomenon of entering the draft THEN transferring needs to be nipped in the bud or it will hurt college basketball a lot. I am not mad at Smith but this is not fair to coaches or teammates losing a guy so late. I have no problem with this new transfer thing without sitting being discussed but I think there needs to be a transfer window and if you want to transfer without sitting (same for grad transfers) you have to do it within the transfer window or you sit a year AND lose a year of eligibility. Same would go for people who enter draft as they would be outside transfer window (something like 1 month from National Championship game or whatever is determined). This seems like a good compromise to ensure players have immediate eligibility but is also fair to the teams so they don't lose a guy late and left scrambling. Just like European soccer has a transfer window college sports needs something similar so you don't have guys transferring at last minute with no way to replace them. -
I was afraid this would happen. In this environment if you get a 5* recruit and they don't produce right away and disappoint they are pretty much going to leave for another opportunity. It's great to get top recruits but the disadvantage is if they don't live up to hype you won't keep them. That is the one advantage of getting a 3* recruits, is while they will not set the world on fire they will be patient and get better over four years. With top recruits if they bust in their first season as Allen did that's it.

Men's Big Ten Tourney Thread: Predictions and Discussion
Aaron replied to IUc2016's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Yes you can get it for that on Stubhub but its $12.45 with fees. Not bad:) -
Can't beat Maryland because they are to good. Not mad and hopefully now IU travels to Chicago as five seed against DePaul. IU has been better on road and neutral sites anyways.
-
Was there tonight at Grand Park and IU knocked of Butler 2-1 in an Overtime thriller. Butler scored first on yet another PK (our third in last two games I have seen which is slightly concerning) but Josh Penn answered with a goal shortly after off a nice cross from Goumballe who did a good job saving the ball from going out for a goal kick. IU dominated the rest of the game but couldn't score until OT when Alex McGill (who has never scored so much as a goal or even played really) of all people headed in a ball in front of the net off a nice long ball into box. Overall our Defense still looks young, but that transfer from Denver will help and then Glass can move back to midfield in fall. Can't wait for freshman who come in to play in Nieto and Folds and this team should be easily top 5 with Penn and Bezerra back and look it already.
-
Was there and we completely controlled the game. I still don't see anyway we beat Maryland but we set a program record for wins today and we continue to play much better on road and neutral sites. In years past we have melted down against Rutgers press but in both games this year handled it fine for two of our better wins.

That is because its only 1130am. Try again at Noon when game starts and it should work.

Men's Big Ten Tourney Thread: Predictions and Discussion
Aaron replied to IUc2016's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Looking at bracket I am thrilled to be 11, assuming we beat Neb Wed. I would much rather have draw of Iowa, Ill or PSU Thu as 11 then Ohio St Thu. and Maryland Friday as 10. Also outside of Illinois your fan advantage will be bigger, as besides Ill, PSU and Iowa will have less fans at Bankers Life then OSU or Maryland. Outside of losing to Neb. I don't see how playing Wed. is a bad thing (especially since we will be tied for 8th but lose tiebreakers) as it gives us extra win for resume and much better draw Thu. and Fri. -
Here's the reality great coaches win in March. Painter is that as is Izzo. Fran and Turgeon are not. Now as for IU, we are not going to get any help but the ball is firmly in our court and if we win our last 2 and that Wednesday game it really doesn't matter what else happens around us and we get in with plenty of room to spare. May need an extra win Wednesday now to lock it up, but we are firmly in control of our destiny no matter what Painter or anyone else does which is new for Archie. We want this to work out and Archie to prove he is the guy then he needs to get wins this week without help which seems fair. Its that simple.
-
Not shocked. We are a 5 unless we beat Maryland somehow. With this teams propensity to play better on road and neutral sites we may be better travelling. My dream is either Chicago against Depaul so we are close or Women go to Gonzaga and Men draw Spokane for one stop shop:).

Men's Big Ten Tourney Thread: Predictions and Discussion
Aaron replied to IUc2016's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Nope. 2003 we beat Penn State in the first round and Michigan in the quarters. Mike Davis is the only IU coach who has ever been successful in Big Ten Tourney. -
Now I think some questions need to be asked. Up until now the losses were at positions we had plenty of depth and were not likely to play much baring injuries. Running back outside of Scott we have no one left and James was going to be a huge contributor next season. Someone needs to question Tom Allen why all these players would want to leave after such a great season if they supposedly love him so much? Something stinks here.

IUWBB @ Michigan - March 1 @ Noon
Aaron replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Women's Basketball
I think Boilers (barely) belong in tourney on women's side despite struggles. Also if you are IU you need PU in tournament if you want that 4 seed as you need to be able to say you swept a tournament team (along with beating a tourney bound Rutgers team twice, a tourney bound Michigan team once and the elite win over South Carolina). If you are IU you need PU in for maximum possible seeding. Don't get it with men though.
