Just curious because I haven't seen his name mentioned and I feel like it was thrown out a lot after Sampson. What are people's thoughts on Bruce Pearl. Again just curious

(ESPN Ticker) "BREAKING NEWS...Indiana basketball coach, Tom Crean, steps down to accept position at [insert team here] This is what is in my dreams nightly

I always have been a gopher fan...

That's fair, but my counter to that would be he has one 1 championship (with Carmelo Anthony) and the year IU lost in the S16 they were 5-5 against ranked opponents. I'm not saying they're not good, obviously Boheim is a HOF. But IMO there's no reason that IU team shouldn't have won that game.
-
My thing with the Syracuse loss is 1: everyone in the world knows what Syracuse does with that zone, yes they were athletic and long, but it's not like that should have been a surprise. Especially since Crean played them every year at Marquette. They don't really change their system he should have been more than ready for it. 2: he had an ideal team to beat the zone. 2-4 good to great 3 pt shooters on the floor at all times and Zeller in the middle to crash the zone. Vic to slash and kick. I know that cuse team was good but IMO there was no excuse for losing to them. Completely outcoached and unprepared (as per usual)

Take that Shocker team when Van Fleet and those guys were freshman, and now imagine that team is IU under Crean and he has them for 4 years. I find it extremely hard to imagine that team makes to a Sweet 16 or FF or even make the tournament every year under Crean. IMO to respond to your NBA level talent, those guys under Crean don't get the exposure nor develop in to better players and don't get make it the NBA at all. So I think Marshall is clearly an upgrade from Crean. Is he my first choice no, would I be upset if he came, no. Though I think I remember him getting offers a few years ago from some bigger programs and he turned them down stating he liked being at WSU and didn't want to leave, which sometimes money doesn't matter when you're truly happy where you are (it's not like these guys are making minimum wage as is).

Devil's advocate, but "he was there for 5 years and the 1st year was rebuilding a pretty bad team" sounds very similar to what we could say about Crean after year 5 and look where we are. Not sure Hoiberg is the answer. Though I don't have the answer either.

I haven't had a chance to read every comment these last few days, apologies is this is a repeat kind of comment. But, I have not been a Crean supporter, I think he did a tremendous job bringing the program back to a respectable state, but do not think he can bring national championships. That being said, I am not sitting so up on my horse to not admit they did a great job this year. After Maui and Duke they could have folded. I know they had a very very easy schedule but once they banded together they never let up. I also agree losing JBJ was a blessing in disguise. But this season was not a failure. I want to see IU win a title but I also have realistic expectations. People saying we need to be in E8s and S16 every year are being unrealistic imo. Yes that should always be the goal to win and go deep, but to EXPECT that end goal every year is, imo, not realistic for anyone. I see people using Kansas, Duke, UNC, MSU for examples so I wanted to do a quick comparison and also threw in two final four teams this year that are typically expected to be good deep teams: I don't care how big a fan or hater of Crean you are those first 2-3 years are irrelevant when comparing post season. So to make this easier I will just show the last 5 seasons for every program starting with the 11/12 year and moving to this year. KANSAS -runner up -S16 -rd 32 -rd 33 -E8 UNC -E8 -Rd 32 -Rd 32 -S16 -FF so far MSU -S16 -S16 -E8 -FF -Rd 64 SYRACUSE -E8 -FF -Rd 32 -ineligible -FF so far VILLANOVA -didn't make a post season -Rd 64 -Rd 32 -Rd 32 -FF so fAr DUKE -Rd 64 -E8 -Rd 64 -Champs -S 16 INDIANA -S16 -S16 -none -Rd 64 -S16 Now I again am not a Crean fan, but I will give credit where credit is due. Also consider these examples are the last 5 seasons after YEARS of building without the NCAA absolutely destroying your program. Had IU never been sanctioned for violations that aren't even illegal anymore and no where near what two of these aforementioned programs have been caught doing where might we be?? I don't think Crean is the long term answer, but at the current moment I honestly don't know if there is too many options out there that are better. And I don't think you can fire a coach who has made it to that many S16 in the last few years and not expect it to look bad on he program. Example, Crean went to 3 S16 in five years and they canned him if I don't win a title in five years I'm gone. I know a title is the end goal, I want IU to compete top 3-4 in the B10 every year, we should be in the tournament every year. But as much as I hate to admit it, now is not the time to give up on Crean and the Team. Had they not turned it around and finished the way they did this would be a different story, but Crean and the team showed signs of improvement and ability to adapt.
-
I'm glad to see the Hoosiers have turned it around lately, but am also scared our AD is going to become overly excited a little too early again and make another mistake. I have come to accept the fact Crean is not going to get fired, if he's going to be gone I feel it will be after we let the contract run out, unless someone makes it known he wants the job. I will be sick if someone like Mack or Archie take a job in the next few seasons and find great success. How many coaches will we see come and go that we could have had. (Not saying they're the answers, but I personally am very intrigued by them, especially Mack).

I agree, the further and further we get from getting back to consistent top 15 program we will move further and further from the tradition. I am only in my 20s so I never got to see a championship team, but I remember watching the early 90s teams with my dad. And my all time favorite team being the 2002 team. True underdog team playing as a true team and knocking off the top teams. That should be all over the locker room for, watch highlights during preseason of those teams. Do something to make them understand that every year IU should be in the top 25 rankings all season every season.

[attachment=3159:ImageUploadedByBtownBanners1451956144.575693.jpg] Didn't know where was acceptable to put this so I put it here. But this, to me, is another big problem. There is no reason these kids should have no idea about Indiana Basketball and what it means to put on the Jersey with Indiana written across their chest. Crean came in here saying its Indiana, it's Indiana, but it seems the tradition of Indiana is becoming more and more unknown to recruits, players, and until Crean is gone that tradition of fundamentally sound, solid basketball will continue to diminish. The NBA style game he tries to play is incredibly hard to watch, I don't care how many 3s they hit or points the put up, 157-158 is still a loss.

Chris Mack has Xavier ranked #6, highest ranking in school history. Not saying he's the guy, though I would personally have him ranked pretty high, just adding fuel to the fire and seeing what peoples that may know more than me opinions are on him.

[attachment=3080:ImageUploadedByBtownBanners1450395942.602046.jpg] Anyone able to catch any of this? Didn't know if it went in to anything further than just Cuban like Crean Answered my own question just saw the video posted. Cuban just says you don't want to lose to duke or the early games but if you lose its good to lose them early and they'll get better. Also said I see the tweets and the emails no I'm not buying him out I want to extend him....

Kind of ties in with me last post admitting I have been wrong, we fire him mid season after a tumultuous start when I would say the majority of fans are ready for it including fencers, don't give them the chance to barely sneak in a tourney and be mediocre again and let the fencers back on the other side. We have to stop playing the he's lost the fan base, well now he has some back, oops now he lost them again. We need to do it at the right time so we don't continue to settle for mediocrity, and I finally am on board saying o think now is the best time. But I do agree with you, the next few months will be interesting to see how things pan out.
-
I have been strong on the idea of keeping Crean, and suffering through seasons, until we get exactly who we want. I am now 100% sure I have been wrong. I do not believe we make the Mike Davis mistake again. I think the best option now is to part ways with Crean as soon as possible and let an interim take over. This lets coaches know we have an opening and are looking and now puts the pressure on the potential candidates. I think the coaching family is still a family and to some it may look shady if we go asking them to coach is while we are publicly supporting Crean, as if we are going behind his back. Make the opening available, let the idea start to fester in potential candidates mind for the remainder of the season so come offseason they already know it's open. It's time we take control and finally get this position available and begin hardcore researching and sending out feelers.

I had to miss the game so I didn't get to see, but looks like entire balcony is empty and it's pretty much open seating. Five minutes in to the game. Not saying this means anything just found it interesting given someone just mentioned this a day or two ago.

Not sure if anyone has posted this yet from tonight's game, looks like people are starting to take notice. Can't remember who mentioned the idea of boycotting some games [attachment=2978:ImageUploadedByBtownBanners1448941825.493571.jpg]

Haven't heard much about Mack from Xavier but I think I would add him to the list to at least take a closer look at. Only one season with less than 20 wins, Three sweet 16s. Not been as good since they moved to Big East, but as I've said before, I honestly think we will be with Crean for a few more years until we know we are getting who we want. I don't necessarily think this is a bad thing, gives us more time to "scout" all these coaches on everyone's list to see if they continue to improve and Creans buyout will continually lower. Obviously Stevens is the number one and number two and number three. But IMO I think it is looking less likely, he is doing very well at Boston with lots of future picks so he can finally begin to shape that team in to his. I think I will begin to pay closer attention and root for some of these other potential coaches on everyone's lost and get more enjoyment from cheering them on then watching the disaster the Crean has put on the floor. ( I will still be watching and root of the Hoosiers on, don't get your panties in a bunch).

For some reason I am on the Archie Miller train. Honestly I think he is the best and most realistic option out there. Let's face It, doesn't look like Stevens is leaving the NBA anytime soon. I have a feeling that we will let Creans contract play out until we find exactly who we want which may be painful for now but I think it's the best option. I would hate to fire him, pay a buyout, and rush a hire and then be stuck in the same boat were in now.

I didn't say it was all on crean, I simply pointed out that your point of a player going left and not being forced right is directly a result of poor scouting report and poor in game coaching. Obviously Crean is not on the court playing, but if someone is not doing their job it is the coaches responsibility to correct it or replace them with someone who can get it done.
