They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
mdiu28 replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
If this Rabby stuff is in fact factual, Woody needs to be fired the minute we're out of the BTT. Not only has he failed to build a foundation, he's causing harm to future success with what little recruiting he is doing. -

That's absolutely true. I don't classify us as a Blue Blood any more. Sorry, just don't. What we are is a program treading water trying to get back there. Pearl isn't the long term solution, but imo he'd stabilize IU and inject excitement into the program, even if for only a short time, in a way May just won't be able to unless he wins big immediately. Bc if May doesn't, we'll all want him gone in a few years. -

For those that have Dusty May as their #1, genuine question, why? Is it purely because of his age? There are plenty of examples of coaches who had a Final Four run, went to a bigger school almost immediately, and have proven to be totally average at a P5 program. IMO, IU continuing to hire the potential next thing would be deflating. Sure, he might be the next Coach K but what are the chances of that? Coaches like that come around once in a lifetime. I remember some wanting Holtmann very badly when Crean was canned and that didn't work out for OSU. Blue Bloods (who stay Blue Bloods) hire sure things with a proven track record in the big leagues or they hire from within. They do this by throwing more money and incentives at them than they currently have. They don't take chances on something that may, possibly, might, potentially be a grand slam. Not saying Pearl is that sure thing, but I put his chances of success here at IU much higher than Dusty's. Dusty's chances of becoming the next Archie Miller are just as good as him becoming the next Bob Knight. If we want to be a Blue Blood again, time to start acting like it. -

The risk/reward with Pearl, IMO, is much better than Dusty at the moment. Dusty could be the next K but he could also be the next Archie Miller. You know what you're getting in Pearl. A winner with a good track record in March. -

For sure. You just never know with IU and our Admin! Would it shock anyone if he got another raise? -

Been following this thread for a couple days now and, maybe I'm mistaken, but I've seen very little, if any, personal attacks on Woody. Criticizing his coaching, lack of recruiting, smoking cigars and slugging wine after a home loss, etc is not disrespectful. He's the head coach at a D1 school where basketball reigns. When he isn't winning, he's going to get criticized. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. If someone is insulting him on a personal level then yeah, that's totally uncalled for. -

If he stays I really hope Woody's strategy isn't banking on fielding teams every year via the portal to avoid doing the grunt work of recruiting and getting to know kids. He clearly doesn't have the desire or drive. -

Totally agree. I have faith in Dolson. He knows this is a massive decision. -

Well yeah. Obviously you never plan on firing your head coach, especially not at the beginning of the year. I'm trying to look at it from a logical perspective from both an admin and fans point of view. In my opinion, I don't see much of a difference. If Scott's plan is still to keep him, I'm wondering what the logic is other than "that's been their plan from the start of the year". Just conversing over what could possibly keep that as our trajectory. Unless we win the B1G tourney, we aren't dancing and next year looks pretty freaking bleak. So what, as an AD, do you need to see from Woody in the next couple months to give him another year? -

mdiu28 replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Absolutely. This is what the AD would always say. I just don't see the logic behind this being the plan right now so hopefully it isn't in reality. Woody hasn't done anything to warrant more time. So why plan to keep him? If he had a top 5 class coming in, I'd get it. But he doesn't. Quite the opposite. Being completely reliant on the portal, maybe some new assistants and a GM is not a plan Dolson should be excited about. So hopefully the real plan it to lock in his replacement before doing anything. -

I've said this is the past as well. They want to get back to there, they just won't do what it takes or are handcuffed by morons like Quinn Buckner. They want the end result without investing in what they need to to get there. If you want to play with the big boys, you need to act like one. Our admin has no balls. Way too conservative. Woody never had the credentials so why on earth was he even in consideration yet alone hired? -

I'm in the same boat, unfortunately. Dolson should be smart enough to understand this decision is huge for him too. Basketball isnt' the end all be all for athletics but it is a huge piece of the pie and what IU fans care the most about. I don't understand the risk/reward with bringing him back for another year. Best case for Woody, he hits the portal hard and maybe makes the tournament, gets another BS extension bc our admin is clueless. Worst case (and most likely scenario), next year is a nightmare from game 1 and he's finally fired. What on earth does Dolson see today that leads him to believe Woody turns this around in such a short amount of time. If you keep him, you have to go down with the ship, Scott. -

He might as well bring in his ole pal Carmelo Anthony. At least recruits might think it's cool but then again, recruits may not even know who Carmelo is. They're that young. -

If true this is incredibly disheartening. So assistant coaches, that he doesn't even listen to are the problem? Does the IU admin think we're that dumb? Firing coaches he doesn't listen to to be replaced with coaches he won't listen to and a GM he won't listen to - THAT'S our solution? Does Quinn really have this much power over there? -

mdiu28 replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
That's a fart in a stiff wind but you're probably right. Lets just fire people Woody doesn't listen to anyway, replace them with more people he won't listen to just to please people. We are a joke. -
They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
mdiu28 replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Exactly. There was never any reason to hire him in the first place but here we are. If he had a top 5 recruiting class on the way, I would understand giving him time but he doesn't. Even if he did, and if I'm Dolson, Woody would still need to come into my office after this pathetic year and knock my balls off with excitment for the future to keep his job. The fact that it may already be a certainty that he's getting another year is as nauseating as it is stupid. Get some cajones like the OSU admin and cut your losses. Time to move on. -

"We evaluate all programs at seasons end" or something politically correct would be a good bet
