General Coach Candidate News

I love Cig and he was a great hire... but Fitzgerald was also a proven coach, and hiring him would have been a real sign that we were serious about trying to turn the football program around. Trying to hire Fitzgerald is not a blot on Dolson's record to me, but rather it's proof that he's serious about finding winners. -

The track record of college coaches leaving for the NBA and then returning to college is decidedly NOT a disaster. Pitino, Calipari, Sampson, Lon Kruger, Larry Brown, Mike Montgomery, and Hoiberg to name a few off the top of my head. All were quite successful after their return to college, other than Hoiberg (who is still TBD). -

In the nine years before Larry Brown arrived, SMU had a winning record once. I’d call winning 71% of his games in 4 years a wild success. -

Agreed on McDermott's success in the Big East, which brings up a pet peeve of mine. Of the last 8 national champions, 4 have come out of the Big East (including the last 2). In that time period the Big East has sent an average of 5 teams to the tourney each year. So why do we keep referring to P4 coaches, when it's clearly a P5 situation in college basketball? -

I think you are underestimating the fanbases ability to come together over a new coach that isn’t named Woodson. Most fans talked themselves into Woody after 4 years of Archie. We’ll easily talk ourselves into Cronin or Collins or even (gulp) Brownell after 4 years of Woody. -

Brownell has pretty much replicated Clemson’s level of success from the 16 years before he arrived. Rick Barnes (‘94-‘99): 74-48, 60.6% Larry Shyatt (‘99-‘03): 70-84, 45.4% Oliver Purnell (‘03-‘10): 138-88, 61.1% TOTAL (‘94-‘10): 282-220, 56.2% Brad Brownell (‘10-‘25): 288-194, 59.7% I dont see an over achiever. I see an average to slightly above average coach. He has no appeal to me. -

I haven’t heard enough Billy Donovan talk this cycle. The Bulls are going nowhere fast. He might get fired. He might just leave, since I can't imagine it’s fun working for Reinsdorf. Old Billy D seems just as realistic as Jay Wright or Tony Bennett. Anyone know if there any horse farms on the market in the Bloomington area? -

If former coaches don't have insider information, then I don't know what to tell you. -

Regarding your concern about Stevens’ hunger for the day to day coaching activities… In what world is the Team President of the NBA Champion Boston Celtics moving back to Indiana to be a college head coach without being fully committed? Most people outside Indiana fans are laughing at the mere concept. Only someone that has an emotional connection to this job would even consider making that move. If Stevens is moving to Bloomington to coach the Hoosiers, there is no doubt his heart is in it. -

Even with my LASIK surgery, I’ll admit that from 90,000 feet away Mark Turgeon and Brad Stevens are pretty indistinguishable. -

Even if the quote is not a direct denial, you just have to take what Stevens and Goodman say at face value until proven otherwise. It may not be satisfying, but I think it’s pretty unlikely Stevens is our next coach. -

I actually 100% agree with this. Stevens or a rep told Goodman what to print, which was deliberately concise. I don’t think we land Stevens, but him making sure Goodman use this language is interesting. It’s either a legit rejection of the Indiana coaching position, letting us down easy this time. (certainly most likely) Or it’s a soft denial, where the quote never mentions Indiana, and the “not a candidate” language is not directly attributed to Stevens. This would be a simple deflection, that gets journalists off his scent, and would be easy to explain away later. Again I don’t think he’s going to be our coach, but it’s certainly not a masshole press conference level denial. -
