Not so fast on McCollum to Iowa… https://www.si.com/college/iowa/basketball/iowa-hawkeyes-coaching-search-odd-turn-ben-mccollum
-
I think that sentiment comes from our fan's fond memories of Knight's teams and his extremely animated demeaner. They associate that passion with a successful coach and program. On the other hand, Cignetti has made his thoughts very clear about his distaste for coaches showing emotion during a game. He's basically a statue on the sidelines... how's that been working out for us?

Does anyone know if DRock is related to T-Rock and K-Rock?

He'll definitely play. I'm guessing Enright's being brought in to help build the culture as much as anything. Having someone that played for DeVries for a couple years and understands his philosophy and expectations will be a huge help in year one.

New statue in Showalter Fountain. I hope Scott is comfortable disrobing and striking a pose.

It seems to me that Dolson preferred DeVries to McCollum because of his lengthy D1 experience. He wanted someone he knew was ready and didn’t have to learn on the job. I also think DeVries was always going to pick IU over Iowa simply due to our resources… this wasn’t a decision DDV made this week.
-
Honest question... Did you ever hear about DeVries during the search? Sounds like we reached out pretty early according to the people on the West Virginia side (Bahamas for the more conspiracy minded, but February at the latest). The search firm IU used was used by West Virginia last season to hire DeVries, so discrete communications would be easy. Some of their reporters think the deal was verbally agreed to last week after they lost in their conference tournament.

If DeVries had been one of the top 4 choices that would have been proof positive that Dolson was settling and wasn’t doing his job to try to land the best coach available. To be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if DeVries was the tenth choice. With all that said I’m still good with this hire.

It will be nice to have a coach that understands college basketball. That can build a program from scratch. That actually recruits. That knows 3 is worth more than 2. That is young and still learning… there are no guarantees that Devries succeeds, but we have a lot better odds to be an elite program today than we did yesterday.

Pretty big list... Brad Stevens, Ben McCollum, Billy Donovan, Buzz Williams, Bruce Pearl, and Bill Self. Also really unlikely names like Brian Dutcher, Brad Underwood, and Bryce Drew. Who am I missing? -

I think what disappointed me most in this thread today was how many people were unfamiliar with Pulp Fiction and Goodfellas. -

Seriously....if he's not Iowa's #1 why should he be IU's? In fairness, does anyone actually believe McCollum was our first choice? If we are pursuing McCollum, it is because we struck out with at least 4-5 other options. -
My takeaway is McCollum's offense can work at any level of basketball, but as others said it requires quick processing, good decision making, and unselfishness. Those are skills like any other that can be developed, and his success indicates he's good at teaching them. I also think his offense has the potential to attract high level players as the ball screen motion offense he is running develops skills that are really coveted in the NBA now - good decision making and proficiency at finishing both inside and from behind the arc.
