Walton doesn't know what he's talking about most of the time… but he's a riot to listen to. I have a podcast of Dakich interviewing him several years ago. I've heard it probably 15 times and still laugh so hard I cry at parts of it.

For me, the issue is Crean. The talent on this Hoosier team is significantly better than what Illinois has. But Groce is a much better tactician and bench coach than anyone on the Indiana bench… Not looking forward to getting out collective butts handed to us tomorrow… but in this case, the end definitely justifies the means. That bad smell wasn't the cheese... it was this Hoosier basketball team.

I did not post any of this as an indictment of Crean on the transfer thing... it was a play on the "deflections" comment... A lot of coaches (most coaches) experience transfers, and it's not a negative thing, per se... but there is the issue of "Creaning" where Clappy brings in a body who has no hope of contributing to the team or the end result, just to avoid having an open scholly. And then subsequently sending said player packing in search of a new home. THAT speaks more about his character than is coaching (in)abilities. April could easily be the poster child for this behavior. No way he was going to help IU - he's not even playing at tiny Wabash College, a D-3 school.

Well. there were others - plenty of others: Jurkin, Muniru, April, Robinson, Roth, Hollowell, Davis, Hanner, Holt, Capobianco, Williams and probably more. Of course some were dismissed because of drinking/drugs/arrests, but you get the point.

Unfortunately, I think the "line in the sand" was crossed several years ago with the drugs/drinking/partying/arrests thing happened. Crean survived that, and, sadly, may survive again. The fire/extend decision may be the only thing that makes his departure even a question. IU hoops IS mediocre, and will remain so with Clappy at the helm.

I'm not convinced that Crean is capable of such a speech. No doubt it would be peppered with pacing, drinking Diet Coke (what ever happened to that brown crap he drank from a water bottle), and a fair amount of "clap, clap, clap".
