Seth Tow - Indiana247: Newkirk gains new perspective from last season on the sideline When Josh Newkirk stepped on the floor for Indiana's exhibition against Hope College, it was the first time in around a year and a half that he has seen game action. Newkirk had microfracture knee surgery after his final season at Pittsburgh. The last time he saw the court in a Division I game was Pitt's second round exit to Florida in the 2015 NCAA Tournament. In that loss, he scored eight points, dished two assists and grabbed one rebound. He spent the last season rehabbing on the side with Indiana, and he used that process to take in different viewpoints of the game. "I worked on a lot of mental stuff," Newkirk said. "Looking at things differently, breaking down film, and I definitely got to see the game different by sitting on the sideline and just watching. I learned different defensive schemes, offensive schemes, where I need to attack more, where I need to get my teammates involved." Since his knee regained strength, Newkirk said the biggest area he has looked to improve is his jump shooting. He said coaches had him practicing his form after the surgery by taking shots from a chair. He mentioned how much the emphasis on repetition has made a difference on his jump shot. "I worked on a little bit of both -- 3-point and mid-range," Newkirk said. He added that he feels good about his three pointer right now. Newkirk also said he wants to step up more of a leader on the team. The injury to his roommate, senior forward Collin Hartman, made it unclear who would take the reins of the team on the floor this season. He said he has tried to do that, along with fellow junior guards James Blackmon Jr. and Robert Johnson. "We’ve been through it, we know all the plays, know what’s expected from coach," Newkirk said. "We’ve just got to bring the young guys along, teach them what they don’t know, and just help them out.” Newkirk said he learned a lot about in-game awareness and handling criticism from watching the 2015-16 Hoosiers, and he wants to pass that on to this year's squad. He has high hopes for this team, and feels he knows what they have to do from the outset. “We want to make a statement," Newkirk said. "We want to establish ourselves on the defensive end, and the offense will take care of itself from there.”

With a number of experienced coaches and skills trainers in the building, players had a wealth of experience at their disposal to help grow their game. The opportunity for exposure helped players build a reputation for themselves heading into the winter months. Shelby Calhoun (Louisville, Ky.), Christian Academy HS – 2020 Coaches often look for size, poise and a polished skill set when evaluating the point guard position. Calhoun, at 5-10, checks many of the boxes that are needed to play the position effectively. She handles the ball effectively versus pressure while also being able to hit the open jumper. Impressively she did not try to force the issue in this camp setting, but instead understood the importance of involving her teammates in game play. Calhoun is only scratching the surface of her potential. The expectation is that she will grow into a capable play-maker as she transitions to Indy Lady Gym Rats organization next spring and summer.

Jake Thomer - Indiana Daily Student After an October filled with preseason accolades and high expectations, IU will see its first game action this Sunday when University of Indianapolis comes to Bloomington for an exhibition contest. It will be IU’s first competitive game in the renovated Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, and tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. The Division II Greyhounds finished 10-20 last season and two years ago lost an exhibition game to IU at Assembly Hall 88-49. All five IU starters return from a season ago, so this year’s exhibition won’t be so much an adjustment period as an opportunity to test how fresh the team is. Throughout the preseason, IU Coach Teri Moren has repeatedly stressed the need for IU to focus on the future rather than the past. Moren’s squad won its first NCAA tournament game in 33 years last season and is ranked No. 23 in the country in the AP preseason poll. IU was selected to finish third in the Big Ten by the coaches and media. Moren said the heightened focus on her team can be 
beneficial. “All of a sudden now we’re in uncharted territory because now we have expectations placed on us, but there’s not a true competitor that I know that wouldn’t want expectations placed on them,” Moren said. Indianapolis and its first-year head coach, Kristin Drabyn, return four starters and their second- and third-leading scorers from a squad last year that finished ninth in the 16-team Great Lakes Valley Conference. Senior forward Nicole Anderson, 13.7 ppg, and junior guard Sarah Costello, 10.4 ppg, will anchor 
the team. The Greyhounds were selected to finish fifth by coaches in their eight-team division of the GLVC. Seven letter winners from last year’s team return, along with the addition of five freshmen. Expect IU’s new faces to see plenty of action Sunday to get their first taste of collegiate basketball in a more relaxed 
game setting. Freshmen forwards Darby Foresman and Bre Wickware and freshman guard Ria Gulley have all been impressive, Moren said. The third-year coach even went so far as to say Gulley is the most athletic player on IU’s roster. Junior forward Amanda Cahill said the young players have adapted to IU’s system smoothly. “Things are definitely coming together. We still have things we need to continue to work on, but all the new people are really coming to the system well,” Cahill said. “Darby’s a really hard worker, and I think she’s eager to learn and try her best, so I’m thinking she’s going to have a good year.” Moren said the team’s four returning seniors, in addition to Cahill and junior guard Tyra Buss, have been able to bring the freshmen along and coach them up on their own. Moren stressed the importance of turning the team into a player-driven program rather than the coach-driven atmosphere that marked her first two seasons in Bloomington. Although results won’t matter much, if at all, Sunday, the play on the court will tell Moren a lot about what kind of growth IU can have this season. She hasn’t been shy about declaring that the goal for this season is to advance further in the NCAA tournament. “We are just taking it one day at a time and one play at a time, but we’re a lot different now than we were a year ago in terms of the experience,” Moren said. “We’re excited about the start of the 
season.”

Davis owns high-major experience and always possessed a high motor. This kid will have two productive years in the American Athletic Conference. Freddie McSwain, Indiana: A freak athlete, McSwain has the type of physical tools that the Hoosiers lost when Troy Williams left school early for the NBA. Tom Crean has always loved to coach versatile players that can play multiple positions and that’s just what he’s getting with McSwain. At 6-6, look for Crean to use this JUCO transfer like a Queen on a chessboard next season. Emmitt Holt, Providence: 6-7 forward has a chance to be an immediate starter for the Friars following the loss of Ben Bentil to the NBA. Holt was a capable role player at Indiana before eventually transferring to junior college and should aid in Providence’s rebuilding efforts.
