General Coach Candidate News

On Pardon My Take, Bilas listed Schertz first when they asked him about coaches who are doing the best job right now and changing the game schematically. He listed Schertz, Oats, and Tommy Lloyd Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
Hillsdale87 replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Indiana is a bad team, but with a lot of talent. The talent just often doesn't make sense together. Everybody in the starting lineup is a 4 or 5*. So for small stretches, things can click. But the lack of cohesion/plan is a killer outside of small glimmers of hope. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

This gets back to my point about talent though. The problem is not with the offensive philosophy, it's with the talent. College talent is significantly diluted since guys started leaving early regularly. I think even if you moved the best coaching from the 80s to today it wouldn't be nearly as effective, both because the offensive skill level is lower, and the defensive athleticism is much greater. You can't compare teams from the 80s and 90s to today. None of those teams would exist today because almost all of the players would have already been in the NBA for 2 years. I don't know about college, but NBA offenses have never been more efficient than they are right now, and the shooting is stuff that guys in the 80s and 90s wouldn't even have been able to imagine. If college scoring and/or efficiency is down from the 80s and 90s, it's likely just because the overall talent in college is lower as guys now leave early compared to guys like MJ, Hakeem, Drexler, Ewing, etc., who stayed 3 or 4 years. Edey fouled Sparks multiple times on that possession and no foul call... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yeah, no point in being on the court if you're not going to shoot that. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I really hope Woodson can make it work, but I'm struggling to see why there is any reason that he should be back next year. It's not just that our guards are bad right now, it's also that the cupboard is bare. There is no reason to think that guard play is going to be any better the next couple years. His team construction doesn't make sense, and he's had 3 years to address it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

This to me is the biggest issue. It's frustrating that our guards aren't good enough right now, but some of that is bad luck. Bates was a 5* that just didn't work out. He didn't get anybody out of the portal for this year, but the portal is a bit of a crapshoot. The lack of a future plan is the biggest concern IMO. It's unrealistic to expect most freshmen to be impact players, but we don't have a SG in the 2024 class right now, which puts us further behind. McNeeley will help stretch the floor, but he's not a guard. Newton was a nice get this year, but if I recall correctly, he's more of an athlete than a knockdown shooter. Nothing wrong with that, but it's not filling the biggest area of weakness. We've got a good shot with Queen too, which is nice. But that could mean 4 5* forwards/centers and mediocre guards. Nice to have talent anywhere, but I'd prefer the talent allocation was reversed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

There are literally dozens of names. Lots of other teams have guards that can shoot and stretch the floor. It's not like fans are asking for the next Lebron. We don't need an all American, although that would be nice too. Wanting competent shooters is pretty basic. Woody has had some recruiting wins for sure, but having a bunch of guards that are mediocre shooters at best is going to put a fairly low ceiling on the team. We haven't had shooters since Crean was here, and that needs to be addressed. It's not necessarily easy, but it's not complicated. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
