IU vs Iowa Game Day Thread

The saddest thing about Wilson's tenure is having to listen to Buck and Don have to make excuses for Wilson's failures. There was a time when Don Fischer was able to call it like it was. Wilson hasn't made a difference with the 'new' defense, and his offense is weak against big time opponents. Sudfeld hasn't been proficient at passing, his absence shouldn't be as impactful as it's been as we have been touting the Hoosier running game. I fear that Wilson's play calls are becoming so predictable that opponents are reading them as easily as our offense. Time for Wilson to say GOODBYE!

Gone by sunset of the last game. The difference between Wilson and Bill Mallory(Doug's daddy, for you youngsters), is that Bill produced winning teams. In 1985, like today, you could walk up to the box office and buy a ticket for ANY game. Midway through his second season, sell outs, you know, like Michigan has. Coach Mallory led us to several bowl games in his tenure, produced scores of pro players, and a Heisman runner-up. And all this by recruit inn Indiana first. Then the all-wise Alumni Association began bellyaching about no major bowl appearances. Wilson, on the other hand has changed the IU uniforms to look like Oklahoma, recorded four consecutive losing sesons(soon to be five), failed in clock management, blamed his failures on a defensive coordinator, and instituted a play call system that even Maryland can defeat! Where are the bellyaching bums now? Not even a winning season, let alone minor bowl! Please swallow your pride for ol' IU and support the firing of this bum!

Wilson on the hot seat according to an idiot

Please people, wake up. Just because Wilson is our coach doesn't mean we need to keep making excuses for his poor coaching. The guy is not cutting it, and has had more time than his predecessors to achieve success, and he has failed miserably. A few wins scattered among a sea of poorly managed, humiliating defeats would not be tolerated anywhere but here. Bury your pride IU, admit you ..cked up, and fire Wilson!

The worst thing about this is that when talking to an Alumni Association bigshot about why Bill Mallory was canned, he replied, "he just couldn't get us to a major bowl." since then, neither DiNardo, Cameron, Hoeppner, Lynch, nor Wilson have even taken IU football to a level anywhere near the Mallory era. Dumping Doug Mallory obviously didn't help the defense, Wilson is the problem Now I would wager that the jerks that presume 'to know what we need' would love to see a winning season! Let's quit pretending to be Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Harvard, etc..., and gat back to recruiting ALL of Indiana, but first let's kick Wilson's loud ass down the road!
  10. I don't think Crean's toxic, especially if you're a player strictly focused on playing NBA ball in a year or two. However, for players who may be great role players, but not potential first-rounders, there is certainly a largely negative aspect in playing college ball on a team which may lose over 50 percent it's lineup from pre to post-season. The uncertainty of the team's makeup and your place in the roster would be off-putting, and Indiana is not the most prestigious team in the country any more, like it or not. Personally, I'd rather not accept transfers, just because I believe that in order to buy into a coaching philosophy, and do what is asked of you, you must be willing to make a long-term committment to a team and stick to it. IMHO, to build longevity into this system, we need to get solid role-players and take the time to develop them.

That only leaves Brad Stephens and Mike Lightfoot in contention for Crean's job, suckas!

Being a coach myself, I've always been impressed by those who teach well and get the most from the least. Gene Keady was very good at that as well. Just nice to see a vastly overlooked coach get the recognition he deserves. Let see what comes of this story in months to come.

Bethel's Lightfoot to be feted By GREG KEIM 03/31/2014 2:50 AM GOSHEN — A local basketball legend will be honored on Sunday, April 6 during the NCAA Final Four in Dallas, Texas. Mike Lightfoot, Bethel College men’s basketball coach, will be recognized at the AT&T Guardians of the Game Awards Show. This event features and honors the top players and coaches in all of men’s college basketball. Lightfoot will be honored for becoming the 18th quickest coach in all of basketball to reach 700 career wins. The evening will also feature the presentation of the 2014 Naismith Trophy given to the nation’s most outstanding player as well as appearances by the coaches in the NCAA Championship Game. Guardians of the Game is a national awareness and education program led by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. The goal of the program is to focus attention on the positive aspects of basketball and the role coaches play in the lives of student-athletes, in addition to the contributions coaches make to their communities. The Guardians of the Game program emphasizes four core values: Advocacy, Leadership, Service and Education. Bethel College President Jim Bennett hired Lightfoot to replace Homer Drew. Lightfoot, former Bethel player, was coaching the varsity boys team at Mishawaka Marian High School prior to his Bethel job. Impressive for a 'meager' NAIA coach!

    IU Volleyball

The last two years have been rough, last year one winless in big ten play. Two years ago, a little better with a couple of wins in conference play. Out-of-conference, we've even struggled. Being a volleyball fan, and father of a former high school and AAU player, and having talked with IU coaches in the past, I can note a couple concerns. There is very little recruiting of players north of Muncie, players from the northern part of the state have to aggressively pursue Indiana. The top three players this year from the north are headed to Purdue, Wisconsin, and Michigan State. I know for a fact that four other top hitters have not even received contact, even though recommended to the coaching staff. Recruiting is a fluid process, players get injured, etc..., however, most recruiting is done at club events, and only among the top teams. This leaves out great performers that may not be on an exceptional club team, though their skills are superior. My concern is that the recruitment process is overly focused at trying to land the top MaxPreps stat leaders. For players whose teams don't report stats through a national reporting agency, it's a huge oversight. IU did not attend any Indiana sectional, regional, semi-state, or state championship tournament games. Hopefully, with the additional of a new asst. this year, IU will be able to recruit Indiana along with neighboring states for the future. I believe that we lack good attackers, and we currently have defenders that are playing roles that they haven't traditionally played. Liberos, and defensive specialists are generally shorter players, since they tend to be quicker to the dig, and can not attack In front of the ten foot line. Their main focus, for those unfamiliar with this, is to dig shots a funneled by blockers, pass the ball to the setter, and score at the service line. Banksy, volleyball has grown so quickly in the past five years, that I predict it will be a money maker in the very near future given a couple good seasons.

2014 Football Season Predictions/Pre Season Talk

Can we sub out some of the big ten teams with Rice, Army, and Air Force, and then rename the team the 'Fighting Hoosiers'? Wilson will either pad his record, or dig his grave this year. I just pray he doesn't call one of his moronic time outs again this year!

Who would you hire to replace CTC?

I'm just saying that any college coach with a .700 winning percentage and 683 wins is no slouch. Homer Drew made the same jump, he was Lightfoot's predecessor, same school, but not nearly as successful. Drew handled tiny Valpo well. Trying to pick 'select' coaches and players has led to mediocrate and is is ruining IU's hard-earned reputation of student-athletes who are a actually students first. And Mike can beat a 2-3 defense.
  22. 87ashtonhoosier

Who would you hire to replace CTC?

The game is the same, on a bigger stage. If you know the game, it doesn't matter when or where you coach. To disqualify a great coach because his credentials doesn't match up to reality. This is what's wrong with IU presently, arrogance in picking performers. Please read the rest of my post, and try not to belittle me with childish high school sport analogies, these only demonstrate my point.
  23. 87ashtonhoosier

Who would you hire to replace CTC?

To disqualify Lightfoot because he doesn't belong to the 'elite' NCAA coaches club demonstrates the current attitude of most Varsity Club members. That attitude is apparent by the belittling comment asking about Knight's roots. Obviously, you are a post-president Ryan fan. Currently, it is better to have the appearance of a young, innovative, progressive coach who will invigorate IU sports, than to actually possess the knowledge of how to beat a 2-3 zone by other than trying to bomb threes. That's why we fired a great football coach, who produced a Heisman runner-up, bowl appearances, etc..., and why we continue to lack coaches who know their sport and aren't afraid of the athletes they are supposed to lead. Unfortunately, IU is slowly becoming the University of Indiana, a school being run by outsiders who believe that IU should model their teams after OTHER successful pro farm schools. To hell with staying for the four years you committed to, screw the team and fans, just come and we'll turn a quick buck for ol' IU, and you can have yours, so that we're all happy!
  24. 87ashtonhoosier

Who would you hire to replace CTC?

IMHO, I believe it's time for a homegrown Indiana coach. Two names that come to mind are former IU great Jim Crews, and Coach Mike Lightfoot. crews had been successful in each of the coaching jobs he's had, and Lightfoot is the quickest to achieve 400 wins in his career, and now is around 700 wins. Both retain and graduate players. IU has moved away from looking for student-team players, in favor of blue-clippers. That's all well and good if you want to be an NBA farm, but IU champs of past won those championships on team play. Too many problems with trying to load the team with the 'elite' players. Discipline, effort and competing egos get in the way of what IU basketball should be about, being a real part of the university by committing to IU basketball first, and to self-interest last. Glass, Crean, Wilson, Dunbar, have all lost sight of the fact that Indiana's successes in the past have been anchored in recruiting and developing INDIANA athletes into cohesive winning teams. I'm afraid that we have regressed from teaching coaches to conditioning coaches. Time for new stock , from the old school!!!
