Candidate Thread: Eric Musselman (Arkansas)

Then you will be settling. You want someone that has aspirations. Only way he gets an NBA job is if he is wildly successful in college. I’ll take that trade off. -
Candidate Thread: Nate Oats (Alabama)

I get that. I don’t see IU paying money directly to recruits/families. I see IU doing things within the rules but finding ways to maximize money to the players with the new NIL rules. If we don’t care about ethics, then just hire Pitino and be done with it. As far as Oats, it could be a Will Wade type situation where he is fine getting dirty in the SEC. I’m not sure that’s the case but when a guy goes from midmajor to power 5 and is landing 5* talent, it doesn’t appear to be legitimate. He isn’t a candidate by his own words, and I doubt IU would look his way bc of what we are discussing now. -

How clean is Oats in recruiting? I only ask because we know Alabama is not afraid to bend the rules in football recruiting. But I looked at Alabama’s basketball recruiting the last couple of years and Oats is landing 5* prospects in each of his first 2 classes. Seemed a bit odd to me for a guy who just left Buffalo to get 5* talent. -

I think people may be sleeping on Musselman. People think he is Crean, but he isn’t. He has NBA background, killed it at Nevada, and in 2 years at Arkansas has them as a 3 seed. He can coach, he can win. His style of play fits what Dolson is looking for. -

Crean had an attractive style but not the substance. So he didn’t have enough wins. So in that case you are right. If Archie won, I still wouldn’t have watched much because it was a slow slog, I didn’t enjoy watching it. I’d spend my time elsewhere. A coach at Indiana needs both style and substance (fluid offensive that is appealing to go with a solid defense which will produce wins). -

Wins do matter. So go get a coach that can win and has style. -
Candidate Thread: Brad Stevens (Boston Celtics)

Archie needed to go. It was the right decision. Brad Stevens is a good coach, but he isn’t the greatest coach ever. There are several good coaches out there that can take IU back to a top program. Now isn’t the time for self loathing and dispair. It’s time for resolve, intelligence, and decisive decision making. Stevens was #1 on the list but there are others on that list and feelers put out to them prior to Archie being let go. All is not lost. Boosters aren’t spending that kind of money without the full picture of who the top target is and what’s the backup plan if the top guy says no. -

I don’t want to watch Wisconsin style basketball. It’s terrible. Even when Archie was winning games it wasn’t fun to watch. Style and winning do not have to be exclusive of each other. It’s possible to have both. -
Maybe. I’m not a Alford fan. If it’s Smart, then get him some college coaches as assistants to help with that transition.

I think if they offer guys like Jay Wright/Few then IU will be used for a raise. I think guys like Musselman/Beard would be serious candidates. -
He is outgoing but not creepy like Crean. Musselman also has NBA head coaching experience. Honestly, his style of play and background might make him the best fit for Indiana. Especially if they can go in a run this tournament to bolster his resume at the P5 level.
-
I think there are 3-4 solid options, Beard is definitely one of them. In no order, Beard, Musselman, and Oats. I’m really interested in the Texas Tech - Arkansas game tomorrow. I’m viewing it like I did the Dayton v. Wichita St game when we last hired. Beard and Musselman have contrasting styles. I want to see how they handle that and if one can out coach the other.
-
And lose a lot along the way. Fife and Cheaney will be in over their heads. Get a coach power 5 success. If it’s an IU guy, it will be Alford.
-
College basketball is about the head coach. Get a top coach who can build relationships and recruit then you have an elite program. If you hire people over their head, socially weird, etc you will struggle.

I wonder if the money there for Brad Stevens would also be there for Oats. If so, then fantastic. Add him to the shortlist and gauge his interest. -
Big Ten not looking as strong as originally thought. Still think Illinois is the best team in conference and can win it all. But IU was bad this year. Regardless if Stevens not coming, Dolson made the right move by making a coaching change.
-
If IU is willing to pay $7 million a year, then only Cal and K are making that. So any of the rest are financially in play. Are they willing is another question.
-
Bennett, Beard, or Musselman. All say no, then Beilein. edit: if the money is there add Oats to the list.

Dolson took his shot. That’s what we all wanted. Brad has to make his own decision. Good luck to Brad and let’s go Dolson go get a winner. -

Boss can refuse the resignation and then talks take place to reach an agreement. This can happen when there is a good relationship and the employer doesn’t want to lose the employee. -

Need to step up your troll game. Nba coaches are a dime a dozen? Only 32 active NBA head coaches in the world. That’s not a dime a dozen. Lol. I expect more with your next post. -

Nah. All IU fans want Dolson to go hard after Stevens. If Stevens says no and then Beard says yes, I’m all in on Beard. This is the only time I’ve felt IU has legitimately went after Stevens. As a fan that’s all we can ask for. -

Dakich was saying an hour ago on his show that the longer it goes the better it is that it’s Stevens. That people who say it’s not Stevens are not correct. He is very much in play. But then he was saying if the announcement was a week or more out the better chance it would be Stevens. Not sure why it would need to be that long of a process. -

Yeah. If Brad says no, the fanbase needs to rally behind who the next guy is. But until then, go get Brad F’n Stevens.
