Transfer Portal w/IU Interest
OKHOOSIER replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
If Woody is not going to change to a guard heavy offense and one big we might as well throw a whole pile at the best one we can get. Ballo is as good a 5 as I would guess we see in the portal this spring. Gotta think competition will be stiff for his services and pricey. Probably prefer someone like Payne off the bench in a 6th man role, but as others have stated, probably a pipe dream and he wants starting minutes. -

That would be a huge pickup if he is willing to take on that role, and start to sure up the glimmer of opening the offense up instead of the two center lineups. -

Rice, Conwell and Hickman would be a home run, and at least signal possible structural changes to the offense. Still interested to see who gets added as a big. I will be interested to see if Rice takes a look at his hometown school since USCe has had quite the resurgence, I live here but you do not hear much about NIL as it relates to basketball for the gamecocks. -
Ballo in the portal, I gotta think we will be on him along with everyone else. Might be the best player in the portal now.

My feelings exactly, stop platforming this idiot with his 500 followers. Hes a nobody. Let him shout into the ether all he wants. My wife has 5 times the followers and all she tweets is cat memes. I am getting to the point where I don’t really even care who we land. Woody can talk about talent all he wants, it simply doesn’t matter. We saw the ceiling with a NPOY candidate and all time Hoosier. It’s also not like the structural issues didn’t exist then too. Yea we beat Purdue. That team also got blasted by Kansas and Arizona. Woody is just a feature of the rot in our program, not a bug. -

It’s literal dead week dude. Coaches aren’t working, they’re not looking at other jobs, they’re not recruiting, they’re doing literally nothing. It’s why it exists. No work. Nothing. Dead week is a complete vacation week. Did I mention it’s dead week? That means no work. It’s like a regular week, but one where college coaches are not allowed to do any work. They have to be on vacation. -

What in the actual F is going on lol, now that’s interesting. The Tyson chicken machine going brrrr. Edit: this is not going to help us in the transfer portal. Arkansas has 2 occupied roster spots. -

So would you call it a work-tweet? lol just messing with you.. And yes, it would be, because Mike Woodson needs to stay as far away as possible from anything that could misconstrued as not doing everything in his power to make us better. That’s why it rankles people. As I said before I don’t care, because of course Woody is golfing in Phoenix, but I understand why it would give someone hanging out in the Fire Mike Woodson + Assessment of Former Posters thread a bad taste in their mouth. Just trying to offer some perspective as to why people would disagree with calling it a nothing burger just because it’s dead week. Cheers, Fire Mike Woodson so we don’t have to care if he golfs a lot anymore. -

“It’s optics, not the time or the activity.” -Me, 5 seconds ago in the comment you responded to. We playing the silly hypothetical game? Okay, find me another tweet of a high major coach golfing on Sunday April 7th at 8am in the morning today. -

Yea, I caught that. That’s why I mentioned it. It’s just most of them could field a basketball team right now. It’s optics, not the time or the activity. And I don’t personally care, I was trying to give you a perspective on why people might. And for the record, the dead period is not “do literally no work” week. It only applies to in person recruiting contact. There’s plenty of work being done. Not that I think Woody golfing changes any amount of it for IU lol -

If Mike Woodson had more than 1 recruit that he landed last week and more than 6 players on scholarship no one would care if he was golfing and it getting posted to social media. Personally, I don’t care if Mike Woodson flies kites and takes salsa lessons for hobbies— now might just be a slightly tone deaf time to be broadcasting you’re doing no work— dead period in Phoenix or otherwise. I routinely tell people not to post things I could be included in, and think might be read the wrong way, and I am no one it isn’t hard. -

What are some thoughts on Johnell? I would have been excited for him if we had hired Dusty, but I do not think Michigan is a slam dunk at all based on Dickinson's comments last year about their NIL. Seems like if I was in his shoes as a grad transfer I would be looking for a team that needed a PG and could maximize my earning potential. Pretty impressive shooting splits. And obviously he is from Gary. He is not on the ITH list, maybe because of 1 year remaining? I probably prefer multi year eligibility guys, but I really like Johnell. -

I will go ahead and admit Purdue basically owning the B1G certainly makes it feel more urgent to me to right this ship with the coach of the future, but I have been pretty critical of him for a while, it just didn't reach fileable for me until recruiting fell off and I watched us get mollywhopped by Auburn in person. The cracks were pretty visible last year despite the high points. That said, I think you can certainly draw a comparison to Purdue losing to FDU last year. That absolutely took the sting off wasting TJD and getting nuked by Miami, at least for me. In a normal vacuum say PU loses in SS or EE or makes a FF and we get smoked in the second round? The heat would have been much more turned up in last offseason, IMHO. -

Breaking news! College basketball players get bet better the longer they play college basketball! More at 10! Jokes aside, I generally really like AC, but sometimes the attempts to counter the fan base are just cringe inducing to me. You are absolutely right, it is a cherry picked stat and the opposite chart could surely be made. We have every reason to be concerned about the shooting coming in because we have been bad at shooting. Also literally no one on their list was a transfer to IU. Pretty sure any fanbase would have been concerned with Troy, Al, Bates etc. transferring to them off seasons shooting those freshman numbers-- particularly if they were already a team bad at shooting threes. -

I think it is important here to make the distinction on who developed. TJD, JHS, KW, MR (so far), MM (so far) are all great examples. They are also basically the only examples. The thing they all have in common is being top-30 players. Dudes matter. I think the main point others are making about development is I could make a list just as long of players that did not get developed from the lower ranked pool we have brought in. -

I mean thats true to an extent but it happens there too. Rupp Rafters was screeching for Reed Shepard to start almost all year. He is the projected #3 in the latest mock drafts. Instead he kept starting Wagner who was by basically every metric a much worse player. But he was a classic KY 5-star. Reed wasn't. It happens all the time. Not saying it will with Tucker, but it happens. Even at KY. -

You are also making assumptions though, and to be fair, yours are also based on empirical data (TG and MM). But MM is playing out of position, and most of the 66 starts you mention are TG basically out of position. In the above scenario, TG should be coming off the bench for MM (a move I think wins more basketball games). How Tucker fits in this pretzel I do not know, but clearly players have been promised to be developed where they see themselves (MM/MR). Does Tucker want to be a 2? He is probably too small for an NBA 3, so it would make sense. I agree dealing in absolutes is silly, I just think the likely scenario is we see Tucker starting or first guy off the bench. If Gallo is starting another 30 games at the 2, we are in trouble again. I think where maybe we can agree is Tucker is just a weird fit on this team given his NBA/Ignite aspirations and his position/skill set. He probably projects as a multi year player, I just do not see how you get a kid like that to commit under that understanding unless a huge bag changed his mind lol -

I have not, I was just pointing to why people think he will start. Kansas, Duke, Illinois, Louisville, MSU, and a half dozen others offered him so I will assume their talent evaluators have watched him play extensively and thought enough to offer. I am not saying I even necessarily disagree with your position, just logically, it is hard to see a scenario where he was told "we are going to recruit a bunch of older portal dudes that play your position but we will give you a bunch of money and maybe you can earn starting minutes." It isn't a wild premise to assume he is starting/getting starter minutes from day 1 after committing to team that cannot currently field a full roster when he is the entire recruiting class. -

It is, but it is assumption based on empirical evidence. Per 24/7, Tucker is the 5th highest IU HS commit since their modern ranking era began which goes back to about 2004. TJD is 11. Does it always work out? No, Tamar is 10. Players of his ilk don't come to programs with 7 open roster spots to come off the bench. I do not personally think Woody is throwing out guarantees per se, but it certainly is no stretch to pencil him in as a starter baring some major portal happenings, and I would not at all be surprised to see him leave if he gets recruited over.
