Post Game Discussion : Duke 91 Indiana 81
MikeRoberts replied to Trish's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
If this was a Crean coached team I would feel more confident here. The only thing I ever felt confident about with Crean was beating ranked teams at assembly hall. Let's see if Archie can do the same. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -

On the coach SS front, I do recall a lot of flops in his stories/statements over the years. Not sure he is anymore reliable than any other noted insider and all of ours got the garland recruitment wrong. Take with a grain of salt Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -

What is the rule? I thought coaches could watch within certain times as much as they wanted to, there were just limitations on the number of contacts/communication. Sounds like I am wrong, curious what the rules are Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -
If i knew it to be a fact I wouldn't post it here but there has been much speculated about some of the Kenny Johnson dealings with some of the east coast kids we recruited. I only know with certainty of smaller things that have gone on, nothing of the magnitude we are seeing with Louisville but I wouldn't eliminate it as a possibility. We aren't clean, not many schools can honestly claim that. I believe the ones that are buying houses and cars and cash deposits are a much smaller group but those are very much the big dogs in recruiting, it's not a coincidence. Of course things like that could happen but it is seemingly few and far between. Maybe I will be proved wrong on that down the road on a future FBI probe but for now, those instances seem rare. There are a lot of ways to cheat and none of them are ok right, but if you are going to do it, why stop at supplying players with visa gift cards whenever they need money (iu) vs buying their family member a car, House, cash deposit? Why cross Iine for small stuff for existing players that is inconsequential if taking another step can land you the cream of the crop? Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

I don't like the idea of not following the rules but there are so many variations of acceptance or denial. Talking about ownership of players sounds like you have watched blue chips a few too many times:) At the end of the day, rules were made by men, about a game, a game, not a deadly drug, and those same men don't care nor do they have the power to enforce. The rules have been ignored for so long that it doesn't even feel like cheating to coaches according to some close to the situation. I also want to point out that cheating happened in the knight years, Davis years, Sampson years, Crean years and likely has already happened in the miller months. Those that are on their holy high horse has either ignored or has chosen to be ignorant hat IU has cheated for decades. We simply have not done it to the magnitude that others have and it has hurt our ability to win and win big. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Would you accept a charge inside the circle, would you accept credit for a blocked shot if you knew you got their hand? I know the answer to the above and those are just minor infractions that happen all the time that don't always get called. If you knew the rules but also knew a ref didn't call it, would you take advantage of that to better yourself and your team on the court? I don't understand this moral high ground and comparing a game to a deadly drug or cheating on your spouse, makes zero sense Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Very true, if you gave that roster to Archie I have no doubt he would do well. Only issue there is the 4 5* players. Wisconsin has usually had one on roster at all times, rarely 2, never 3 or 4 and that is the difference we are talking about. To have 4 5* players on your roster at one time, I believe you have to get your hands dirty. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -

Look at the last 20 years of national champions, it is littered with the same schools, all schools that have been rumored to be cheating and they likely have been for a long time. It doesn't seem to matter, they keep winning and winning and winning with no end in sight. Not a lot of do gooders in that list nor does history suggest they will be. I seriously hate that it has come to this but I believe to act like a blue blood these days you have to act like a blue blood... Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -

If IU never wins another championship ever again, the allure, the passion, the attendance etc will all decay and 50 years from now IU basketball will mean little, will become an Iowa, Illinois etc. I have completely changed my stance on the cheating thing and even hesitate to call it that anymore. If so many are doing it and the people that made the rules refuse to enforce them then what is that? It becomes jay-walking, a law that was written but nobody enforces and everyone does. I think Wisconsin may be the best example of a program that recruits their state well and has a good balance of 3, 4, 5 star talent and likely plays within the rules and has consistent success. IF they are the best example, what does that say for that model in today's game? 2 final 4s and 0 championships in their 16 year period of success. To be in the top echelon, top 10 every year and a true contender just about every year, I think you need more stars and to get them I think many of these programs work outside of the rules. I always loved saying to uk fans etc that they are cheaters and we are not but at the end of the day, 20 years later, where has that gotten us? I wish the NCAA and FBI would abolish this crap so everyone could succeed at the highest level without it but they don't Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -

Hmm, you are assuming that sentiment is a result of garland vs the college basketball climate that was mentioned in connection to said statements and also assumes cheating equals paying players so a lot of assumptions here. I also don't see a lot of sky is falling posts here either, in fact a lot of people saying how fortunate we are to have the 4 star guys we have coming in like Phinisee. Anyway, I will stand behind my new belief that to get to the top and stay there, Archie cannot be a saint. Look at the top programs and if you believe they got there and stayed there by following the rules to a T then that is fine, I don't believe that for a second, especially after what has come to light on the small sample probe by the FBI Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -

Yep! I wish the landscape was different but I strongly believe that you have to cheat to win big. Not saying you can't have a good program and MAYBE win a championship but to win in recruiting and on the court every year, year after year you have to get your hands dirty. I hated calipari for so long and thought he was one of only a few, but now I am convinced all the big programs do it, some just do it better and those are the ones that dominate the top 10 every year. It would not upset me at all if IU followed suit and that is a big pivot from where I used to be. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -

In all fairness to those that are stating an opinion that things are not looking good, they can base that off of some real updates, Shittu being the most recent. There has been a real feeling, also stated by Yogi that seems to be close to the situation that Romeo and garland wanted to play together and garland going to vandy means Romeo to vandy if that is true. Many have also stated that Romeo wants to play for a contender and while I don't think that vandy will be, adding Shittu is a big push in that direction. Then, there are also he many vandy insiders and recruiting gurus that have shifted to saying Romeo is a vandy lean and there you have it. Please, by all means, bring some new and IU positive news here to the thread, it just doesn't appear to be much if any momentum here lately. There are a few romeo is a lock to IU voices that have been saying that 100 times a day here and then a few in the opposite direction, both can't be right Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -

Stop testing me Bailey:) no I know, losing our target recruits to vandy is new but losing them in general isn't. That's why I don't blame some for doubting our ability to, we have just failed to bring in these guys at a high clip over the last 20+ years. We need to get back to a place where when we set our sites on 5 kids we almost know with certainty we land 3 of them. That's how it used to be and that is how it is at uk, Duke, Kansas, unc etc. we aren't anywhere near that so why bash the crap out of people that have doubt? Are they the crazy ones or is it the unbridled optimists that are basing their confidence in hope and love and little more? Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app
