Fred Glass accepts mediocre basketball
TheWatShot replied to Magnanimous's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Just be like the people in this video. Keep making noise. -
Buyout never was an issue. Don't really feel like explaining all of that again.
-
The worst part is, the team will inevitably bounce back at some point and Crean will start getting credited for "keeping things together" while we do just enough to sneak into the tournament. I've never seen a luckier coach, in any sport, who got more mileage out of a flash in the pan or had more escape routes than Crean.
-
I know, but 9 years of unwarranted arrogance needs to finally run into a brick wall called karma.
-
We need one of our fans in attendance to follow Crean off the court after the game yelling "YOU WRECKED THAT PROGRAM! YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DID!"
-
On nights like these, I like to think this scene reflects/will reflect what Glass is dealing with in regards to Crean, with our fans providing the noise: (Fans protesting in 2014…2015…2016…2017) Glass: "God, they're still going?" This is exactly what I told you would happen! Should have fired him 2 years ago. Not much fun anymore, is it? (2016 Big Ten title; fans applaud) Glass: "Thank God, maybe they're wrapping it up." (IPFW loss, Nebraska loss) NOISE! NOISE! LOUD NOISE NOISE AND A CIVIL WAR CANNON! (the cannon is probably yet to come)
-
I think anything that involves teaching nuances of the game isn't something Crean would want to do if he didn't have to. It's much easier to just tell your team to play faster.
-
Said this awhile back. The NBA and their quest to find the next Kobe/Lebron has ruined it.
-
Every time MSU has made a three tonight, Purdue has responded with one. Every time.
-
Come on, MSU, make a freaking free throw.
-
MSU gets an 8 point lead then proceeds to puke all over themselves and give it back.

This is bullsh*t and the type of fear-mongering that turns a first-rate program into a second-rate program. There are always going to be people who aren't wild about what the coach does, or think he's not getting the most out of his team. After 9 years of Crean, I think you'd be surprised how much more relaxed the fanbase would be for the next couple years if we landed a good coach. Now, if we're seeing lingering problems in his fourth or fifth season? Different story. But again…we'll never know if we just stay the course. If you want to walk on water, you have to get out of the boat.
-
Any reason you believe this? He's just never struck me as the kind of person who would walk away from a big payday. I've felt this way since he went to Greenspan a few months after starting here and demanding that 2 more years be added to his contract because the situation was worse than he thought (he was given an 8 year deal to start with).

Playoffs have been trash, as expected. The Colts really need to get good again.

It might seem like "bad pub" to you, but it's really just the way of the coaching world. Ben Howland took UCLA to 3 Final Fours and got fired two weeks after winning the Pac-12. Crean hasn't done anything close to that. He missed the tourney and got a 10 seed (lowest we've ever been seeded, btw) following his first Big Ten title, and could miss the tourney again this year after winning the second. He's shown multiple times that he cannot sustain success, even with all the resources he needs. Not to mention, he's been 9 years. We gave him more than enough time. The only people who would take issue with us moving on are the people who don't want to see us become a powerhouse again.
-
The next coach may have ups and downs. Or, he may be consistently great. We know Crean isn't constantly great and never will be. Why keep trying something that obviously won't work?
-
I can already see the meltdowns when posters with no avatars and single digit post counts show up to share what their "sources" told them.

Butler is down 25-5 against Depaul.

He was recruiting for the class of 2017. They would be seniors in 2021. His contract expires in 2020. Glass is hearing it almost daily from big-time boosters who are fed up, and he's got two more months of it to look forward to. I don't think he wants two more years. He's made good decisions with our other sports (which I know some people pay no attention to and base him solely on what he does for men's basketball). People need to have a little more confidence that our fanbase will be heard. We could go into next season with no McDonald's All-Americans on our roster. The last time that happened was the year before Cody Zeller came aboard. I'd love to hear Glass try to explain an extension under those circumstances. He couldn't, which is why I don't think he will. The writing is on the wall. The Crean era is ending.
-
He was recruiting players last summer without being under contract for their senior year. I guess I don't see why it'd be necessary now but it wasn't then.
-
Where is James going? Europe?
-
Just a thought…but have the infamous 4 hour practices made a comeback?
-
For the people who are so certain an extension is coming this spring: why didn't it happen last year? The timing would have been perfect: a second Big Ten title in four years, a triumphant turnaround after a disastrous start, winning without one of the top scorers…yet no extension, and Glass was perfectly fine with sending Crean into the offseason to recruit players who were told by other coaches that Crean was not under contract for their senior season. Now, with our tournament fate very much in limbo, almost certain regression from a year ago, and very little recruiting momentum, Glass is going to be ok with that? Let it play out.
