Just to be clear I don’t think it’s likely OR a good idea

IUBB Players in the Portal/Draft Exploratory Status
lillurk replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Good luck to KL. Assume he probably would not have played off ball for CMW given coach’s preference for plus positional size, which means he might’ve seen the writing on the wall: behind X, JHS, maybe even Trey at PG, and Phin if he returns. -
Do we think Armond Hill gets moved to an AC role? I would guess he doesn’t want to recruit. Someone up thread mentioned Moye or Lewis, I like those. Maybe one of the other staffers like Walsh if CMW was a fan of what they brought and wants to promote? But I’ll be the first to say there’s no reason to expect an “IU guy,” and CMW may have connections we haven’t considered.

Yeah let’s please not overreact to this. Assistants change all the time!

Mike Woodson and His Coaching Staff
lillurk replied to Hoosierfan1901's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
The bothersome part of this isn’t having a consultant, I don’t think. It’s the role confusion and frustration among the staff. If Ya leaves, I would guess it has as much to do with his relationship with Kenny Payne as anything. He needed a second chance, CMW gave him one, it’s ok to have some asst coaching turnover. In this specific case I wonder if having another shot at a hire is helpful with a year of college coaching under CMW’s belt. I have no inside info but would hope Fife stays. CMW and DF are reasonable people who can help each other, maybe they’ll hammer out differences and roles. -
Came here to post this! More info at the link: https://www.si.com/.amp/college/2022/03/23/adidas-name-image-likeness-network I usually wish we had Nike but adidas has a head start here. Additionally, the mention of using affiliate links makes me think we’ll be more likely to be able to buy adidas gear the team(s) wear.

I’m acquainted with a coach at a small, non-D1 college. He and his cohort have been telling class of ‘22 kids for a year that they should take the best offer they have. The carousel will stop with a lot of good HS seniors needing to take a grad year or play at a level down or whatever as the spots that are available get absorbed by extra Covid year players. I think there’s an element of it that’s self-serving when the coaches say it — not that they’re selfish or wrong, but a small % of guys WILL get a high-major offer still. And yet it really is a numbers game, and some guys that would’ve redshirted at, e.g., Evansville, will play D2 because a transfer takes the grant.

I can pro/con UGA vs. IU for him: UGA pro — plenty of PT, coach he previously committed to, close to home con — bad facilities, probably lots of losing, the NIL $ goes to football players, poor fan support IU pro — play with your HS PG, probably plenty of PT, play for a coach w/NBA HC experience, NIL $ to be had for hoopers, rabidly supportive fanbase, tons of exposure con — farther from home

Don’t have splits for it but I thought the Race at 5/JG at 4 lineups looked good this year.

Believe he’s a FL native, too, not just an out-of-state Montverde player.

Yep, and rewarding talent/skill leads to a better television product, which makes the league more money, too. Selfishly it also benefits the half of the conference that can recruit top talent, which would help IU (though not exclusively IU, of course). A virtuous cycle.

I want to be clear up top that the Jimmys and Joes matter. Good players make good teams. This I get the handwringing about how we can possibly improve if some of our best players leave — it’s a good question. On a team level, though — and bear with me, this is rote — you get better by scoring better, and stopping better. This year’s team was just not very good at scoring, which won’t be news to anyone. On a component level, it was alright at 2s, and slightly below average from 3 and FT. Top 100 in avoiding being blocked, getting to the line, and avoiding TOs (impressive after a rough start). Defensively IU was quite good: top 10 in keeping opponents from making twos, top 20 in block%, top 70 in defensive rebounding. It might’ve been even marginally better than it looked: opponents hit a higher % of FTs than you’d expect, which you have no control over. So it’s the players who do the playing, yes. I’m worried the defense could take a step back on the interior without TJD and, to a lesser extent, Race, if they leave. But it could clearly improve in other areas, too, to compensate. Offensively, though, there’s lots of room for growth. So to me, it’s too early to know what to expect, but I think it’s certainly possible that IU gets better even if right now, we’re not sure what a better roster looks like.

2022 NCAA Tournament / Bracket Reveal
lillurk replied to BlueDevil's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I recall looking up his AAU shooting numbers when Archie was after him and thinking, “just what we need, another slight, below-the-rim guard who can’t shoot.” -
Does McMahon end up at one of the other SEC openings, then?
-
I saw more NBA guys chattering about him in the last ten days (Hollinger and Schmitz specifically noted impressions) than in probably three years combined. Good for him. They seem to think he’s a second round/two-way contract guy right now. I also think he’s really changed his IU legacy in the same time frame. Good for him.

Very funny that Maryland has had an opening since December and they even kick the tires on Gates or Golden? Like the AD is just googling guys s/he recognizes from FS1 Thursday 8:30 broadcasts

I don’t disagree, but I will say that guys who TRULY do lots of things very well are hard to find and often not in college long (unless they lack pro-quality size/athleticism). So on my list above, for example: a do-it-all offensive guard in Pack…who may not give you a ton on defense due to size. A genuinely good 3-and-D wing doesn’t have to be just a standstill shooter…the best version of this type is, like, Khris Middleton. And so on. Think about this year’s Purdue squad, for example. They’ve got one guy, Ivey, who does it all. Around him they’ve got a huge center who finishes everything at the rim, another center who’s a great passer and a pretty strong finisher, a lunch pail 4 who cans 3s and guards, and other wings/guards who mostly do one or two things well (ball handle, shoot, defend). IU’s got some guys likely to return who have the start of some versatile skill sets. Can Trey hit 35% of his 3s and get shots up quicker? Can he avoid fouling? Can Scoop put it together? Can Jordan? If a couple of those hit, you’ve suddenly got a few versatile guys and need some fill in pieces.

Purely wishcasting: 1. Nigel Pack 2. the best 6’5”-6’8” 3-and-D wing in the portal 3. Rim protector who will dive and dunk on O.
