Rumor has it that the mysterious accomplice Mr. "A" form the calf theft was... ... ... ... ... ... Alford.
-
Sounds like the case against Archie was pled from two calves down to one!
-
Or maybe ;) it was this! MR. JUSTICE BUTLER delivered the opinion of the court. ARCHIE Miller was charged with the larceny of one calf. He was found guilty and was sentenced to imprisonment in the penitentiary. He seeks a reversal of the sentence. One E. M. Odell testified, in substance, as follows: Odell and Miller entered into an agreement, whereby Odell was to steal, at a farm designated by Miller, two calves and deliver them to Miller at a certain sand and gravel pit located off the road and about three miles from Wray. The pit was on land owned by Miller's father, and was directly across the road from the house in which Miller and his father lived. Miller was to pay Odell for the calves. If either was arrested, he was to take the blame. Odell stole the calves, put them on a trailer (also stolen by him), took them to the appointed place, arriving at about 1 o'clock at night, turned off his automobile lights, and thereupon Odell, Miller and a man whom we will call A (who, according to the evidence, was an ex-convict) transferred the two calves to Miller's truck, and Odell received the money that Miller had promised to pay. At Miller's request, Odell signed receipt for the money. Odell then drove from the pit towards the main highway and was arrested by the sheriff, and immediately thereafter the sheriff arrested Miller. The sheriff testified that on the night in question he followed an automobile truck driven by Miller; that Miller drove past the gravel pit; that the sheriff and his deputies stopped at the gravel pit "to look the place over" and sent their automobile back to town; that in about half an hour or longer Miller returned, drove off the road, stopped at the gravel pit, and turned off the truck lights; that at about 1 o'clock at night the witness saw Odell and A transfer the calves to Miller's truck; and that he then arrested both Odell and Miller. Miller testified substantially as follows: Miller agreed to buy two calves from Odell. Miller wanted the calves delivered at the home of his father, but Odell insisted upon delivering them at the sand and gravel pit. At about 10 o'clock at night Miller started for the pit, but "inadvertently" drove a considerable distance past it. He returned and went to the pit. Odell was not there. Miller turned off his lights and went to sleep. At about 1:15 o'clock Odell and A arrived with the calves, and Odell, Miller and A transferred them to Miller's truck, and Miller paid the money he promised to pay. When Miller was about to leave the gravel pit with the calves, he was arrested. Miller denied that he agreed to be a party to the theft of the calves, and denied that he knew that the calves were stolen. He said that he had often worked days and nights in his business, and did not think the time or place of delivery unusual, in view of Odell's statements to him.

I think I remember that Archie got pulled driving when he was at Az. and the ticket was taken care of. May have been a DUI.

Because at the time a 16 year old's initial appearance was in adult court (for certain charges) in Connecticut. Was amended in 2010 to having a 16 year old's initial appearance in juvenile court:

Hey...Gladstone and his High-Rise co-coach Spezzano have come a long way since their 2003 plastic machine gun, masked holdup of a Greenwich Connecticut convenience/stationery store! http://www.nytimes.com/2003/03/04/nyregion/5-teenagers-in-greenwich-are-held-in-holdup-attempt.html

I am not an airport stalker. I am an internet speculator!
-
Nothing good yet; as Waynefleek said, merely super intriguing.
-
He runs all kinds of Northeast skills academies, is a very successful prep school coach, and runs an AAU team, but I can't yet find a real connection to any recruit we're after.
-
Well... a little quick research: the entire staff of Highrise Basketball has Queens connections. Queens is the home of...Moses Brown. Gladstone was also the New England prep school coach of the year, and regularly interacted with...David Duke.
-
We just hired Drew Gladstone as a graduate assistant. Originally from Connecticut, played in Queens and NYC, college ball at DePaul. Now the riddle; cause I gotta think there's a connection to a recruit here. http://www.highrisebasketball.com/about.html

And that's why I think that Al Durham is gonna get a lot more run than many think.
-
^^This^^ Which could also mean more CuJo, Al Durham, and Clifton Moore, and less Devonte Green and Josh Newkirk.

Not necessarily like a match up zone or a sagging man to man, though there are commonalities: A matchup zone usually pressures more than this defense off the ball and relies on regular switching to allow for help defense. This defense relies on help, not switching. A sagging man to man does not pressure the ball or the immediate pass recipient so heavily. The pack-line pressures the ball handler heavily and dares the pass recipient to drive, while forcing that pass recipient into the pack. This defense doesn't "trap" per se, but it is designed to constantly create help situations whereby multiple defenders are available to maximize the defense near the basket. Can be susceptible to a great catch and shoot player, and doesn't produce as many turnovers and transition opportunities.

Defense will be the key to the change we'll see with the Archie Miller era. I've watched some Crean era games in the past few weeks. Now that I understand the pack-line principles, the pack-line that Archie uses will be a 180 degree difference from what we have been used to. Pack-line: Has an absolute rule that NO defender gets out past about 17 feet from the basket, unless they are on-ball. It allows for perimeter passing, but dictates that as each pass is made, that new on-ball defender closes out quickly (with hands high to prevent a quick three pointer), and the replaced prior on-ball defender drops back into the "within 17 foot" pack. The on-ball defender guards aggressively, and unlike most defenses, forces drivers toward the lane (and into the pack) instead of toward the baseline. Pack-line places very little emphasis on offensive rebounding, preferring to ensure that all defenders are back to establish the helping pack. Crean's teams: Were very good on the offensive boards (defensive strike one during transition defense), Pressured the ball AND the passing lanes (defensive strike two in preventing cutters) and, Had bigs routinely hedge way out on screens (defensive strike three; if not done well creates freedom for the ball handler to pass to an open man and creates double teams away from the basket instead of near the basket). Crean's style created defensive turnovers and pressure with defenders like Cody and Vic, but was a terrible way to cover for players with lateral quickness deficiencies like Jordy or Thomas. Crean's style also required defenders to expend far more energy on the defensive end, causing them to wear down at the end of games and the end of the season (sound familiar yet?), and made it hard for key players to play 30 minutes plus. If the Hoosiers are to improve, players that can close out quickly, have length, and recognize defensive help opportunities will be critical, and that will go a long way toward determining playing time.

B10 Basketball Recruiting Thread

Great move by Holtmann. Andrew Dakich is by all accounts a great kid and a locker room leader. Giving one of their many open scollys to him will be very helpful to a culture improvement at OSU. -
(2018) G/F Damezi Anderson to Detroit Mercy
Stuhoo replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Damezi is a pure catch and shoot player currently. And a very good one. He does not do all that much with the ball in his hands, and his motor and defense will need to markedly improve. His athleticism is really good, and there is every reason to believe that it will. I expect Jerome Hunter and Race Thompson to log far more minutes in 2018 than Damezi. -

THAT would be a top three class nationally, with the top three recruits from the State of Indiana and all five recruits from the Midwest. -
