Curtis Jones commits to Indiana, cites 'tradition' as part of choice Four-star shooting guard Curtis Jones, the 55th-ranked player in the ESPN 100 for 2016, told ESPN on Saturday that he will play at Indiana. EDITOR'S PICKS Scout's take: ESPN 100 SG Curtis Jones to Indiana Curtis Jones is slight of build (6-4, 170) at this stage of his career, but has the chance to become a prolific scorer and multi-dimensional backcourt threat at Indiana. The 6-foot-4 native of Highland Springs, Virginia chose the Hoosiers over Georgetown, California, andOklahoma State. When asked why he chose Indiana, Jones noted "the tradition of Indiana, along with Coach [Tom] Crean's plan for me to develop over time." "The fan base is definitely one of the best in the country," Jones added. Jones started his career at Highland Springs High before transferring to Paul VI in Richmond for the 2013-14 season, and on to Huntington Prep (West Virginia) for 2014-15. Jones averaged 15.3 points and 3.9 assists last season, while playing both point guard and shooting guard. Indiana is also in the hunt for another Huntington Prep star, ESPN No. 8 forward Miles Bridges, who previously told ESPN he will make his decision on Oct. 3. Indiana will lose Yogi Ferrell and Nick Zeisloft from the backcourt after next season, and Jones will be expected to help fill the void. Jones joins 6-6 in-state wing Grant Gelon in IU's 2016 class. "Last year they played an exciting style of basketball and I feel I fit into their system where I can play either on or off the ball," Jones said.

And he did it without a hat filled, Twitter plastered press conference! Congrats to Curtis. Congrats to iubb.

CURTIS JONES GOING WITH THE HOOSIERS The four-star guard, and No. 55 player in the ESPN 100 for 2016, committed to the school Saturday, he told ESPN. Jones chose the Hoosiers over offers from Georgetown, California and Oklahoma State, deciding to go with "the tradition of Indiana, along with Coach [Tom] Crean's plan for me to develop over time."

The defense wasn't notably great, but at least it wasn't "IU bad".

Kids generally want to take official visits and I can't blame them: Imagine being a high school senior with the chance to visit multiple fantastic college campuses for free, replete with girls, girls, girls, and topped off by front row tickets to a big time college hoops game. I'd take all five visits, and if I only had four teams I really liked, I'd fake interest in the University of Hawaii to get there for a lovely trip! Moral of the story? Grant Gelon did not need an official visit to have a free weekend in Muncie or Terre Haute, where his other options lay. DeRon and his family will want to see some excellent places.

PITT Transfer Josh Newkirk is headed to IU!
Stuhoo replied to Sam_Boger's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Only if you crystal ball gaze and assume the worst. My (I think) realistic expectations for the '16/'17 rotation? Center: Bryant, backed up by DeRon Davis and Emmitt Holt, Maker as a pipe dream. PF: Holt, DeRon Davis, Juwan Morgan, Leaf/Bridges as a pipe dream. SF: Hartman, OG, freshman 4 star (Jenkins, Stevens, Leaf/Bridges as a pipe dream) Guards: Rojo, JBJ, Newkirk, one more four star-ish addition. Assuming normal player development, that seems like an excellent talent/experience level mix. Certainly as good as our B1G competition's talent level and experience. Absolutely a top 25 roster at a minimum! If the coaching is good enough, we are fine and then some. If the coaching is good enough. -
PITT Transfer Josh Newkirk is headed to IU!
Stuhoo replied to Sam_Boger's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
If we sign three more for '16, we would have at least two open spots for '17 (Colinn and JBJ). If Thomas Bryant is a two and done, that's three open. Add one more transfer under the "somebody's not getting enough playing time" theory, and we'd have four open. Moral of the story? If Scruggs, Wilkes, Michael Porter and Malik all want to come to IU, there will be PLENTY of room. -

PITT Transfer Josh Newkirk is headed to IU!
Stuhoo replied to Sam_Boger's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I'm surprised that rebel is the only one that hit the nail on the head with a major component of this recruitment. There is a common theme that has held since Stan, "The Movement", etc. CTC is trying really, really hard to only recruit high character kids. OG and Juwan are through the roof academically, and T Bryant was held as a civic treasure in WV. Zeisloft, Rojo, JBJ, Beilfeldt? Same dynamic. That doesn't keep us from going after four and five star players, but they all seem to be very squared away kids or we don't even try to get into the mix. Newkirk seems to have a Ronnie Johnson skill set and a Robert Johnson mindset. And that's O.K. -
I suppose it is possible that with the Jones visit coming in a week Gordon realized it was time to make a decision if he wanted a shot at IU. It would be interesting to see the reaction if Gordon committed and Curtis cancelled his visit.

June 18th article in the Indianapolis Star in which he said that Butler was one of his top three but that was changing. He then named the list of five schools where he wanted to take an official visit. Indiana was one of them, Butler was not. I think that Butler is a real possibility, and that Arizona State and LSU have a chance, but that Indiana is as likely a destination as any.
