Prediction League (Game 1 - FIU 9/1/18)
Str8Hoosiers replied to Str8Hoosiers's topic in Indiana Hoosiers Football
IU 24 FIU 17 -
Yes I am for real. So the coaches can go and recruit another but there are supposed to be restrictions on that because the last guy they recruited decided to transfer, lets not put any restrictions on the kid whose choice it is but lets restrict others that can't make the choice, they should definitely face the consequences of a decision that they didn't make. As others have said, nobody is mentioning "mildly inconvenience" except you. And you are also the only one saying the "kids are being treated unfairly". I still don't get how it is unfair that they have consequences for their decisions. I am (and have been) trying to make valid points and explain my side, I appreciate the discussion, but at this point it appears you don't have anything else to add, just keep saying the same thing until it is accepted and have begun to sound irritated and condescending so we can just agree to disargee on the subject and move on so nobody else has to read a back and forth.
-
That is a rare case, but sometimes things just don't go how you hoped... doesn't give you a free pass. I didn't bring up the military but I don't see how the comparison is so silly as you call it. I can bring other examples but it won't help, you have decided. What about an NFL player choosing to not go to training camp... cost him a million dollars... his choice but he pays the consequences. Nobody is saying the student athlete doesn't have a choice, and as pointed out earlier they aren't even PUNISHED... but they do have consequences, which could be seen as more benefits of sitting a year. So you want the teams to have restrictions? How is it their fault if all the time and effort they put in recruiting a kid and he decides he wants to leave?
-
So if you choose your job and location then decide you don't like it can you choose to go elsewhere anytime you want?
-
I will admit I was never in the military and I have no idea, but I find it very surprising that in the military you get to negotiate a contract.... I would have assumed you sign on and they tell you what to do... but as I said I could be VERY wrong here. How is it silly? Both are things that a young person has a choice on. Both are things that open opportunities. Both are things that have rules in place and consequences if you break those rules.
-
It is your opinion that they are not being treated fairly. To me there are being treated fairly (Actually better than fairly). Just because there are consequences for a choice doesn't mean it is unfair. That is my entire point, all choices have consequences, sometimes you know them ahead of time sometimes you don't but either way you have to live with them. Why shouldn't they? Why should they get a free pass to do whatever they want and avoid any repercussions?
-
No actually I am saying that we shouldn't change this contract because it is a HORRIBLE idea (in my opinion). It is bad for the the game of college basketball, it is bad for the coaches, it is bad for the fans, it is bad for the universities... the ONLY thing/people that would benefit from making a change like this is the student athlete. And I don't believe their gain offsets all the rest of the loss to everybody else. Agreed they are not the same, you are trying to say the punishment for a coach should be the same as it is for a player (have to sit a season) but now you are agreeing that they aren't the same and they get to negotiate their contract. If a school wanted to put a clause in a coaches contract that if they left on their own free will they had to sit a season before coaching again then i would say that coach made his decision when signing the contract and sorry about his luck as well, he has to live with those consequences if he decides to break the contract later (I realize no coach would sign a contract with this stipulation at this time, but if it became a sweeping idea by universities then coaches would do it.) If you don't want a contract broken you put in stipulations that make it bad to break it.... for Student Athletes it is sitting a year, for coaches it is money, for Universities it is Buy-Outs (money). Each entity that enters into a contract does so with all the details and knows what is expected and what the repercussions are for not living up to the contract.

I am not sure what point you are trying to make here, I am missing it. You are correct a kid wouldn't choose to leave if they didn't think they could get on another team... They most definitely will, no matter if it is up a level, down a level, or on the same level, when a kid is transferring they ARE getting on another team. And if a Coach is leaving then he IS getting on another team. So as you said he has to pay back some money as a repercussion. Mythical Standard? Doesn't exist in the real world? What world is that? In the world I live in I have many choices to make and I have to deal with the consequences of those choices. What you are advocating for is there to be no consequences and no repercussions and that is absolutely NOT like the real world. That is the everybody gets a trophy mentality and that is not the way the real world works. Coaches and Players are NOT the same... a Coach is an employee and a player is not.... a Player doesn't make money (presumably) therefore there is no monetary repayment to be made... a Coach isn't on a short list of time eligibility therefore requiring them to sit isn't the same thing. A Coach gets paid under contract, so if they break that contract they pay it back or face the whatever repercussions are listed in the contract. The Student athlete has basically a contract for the scholarship and if he breaks it part of the language of this mythical contract are that if you transfer to another school to play a sport then you must sit out 1 year before being eligible... they know this upfront, if they still choose to transfer then they can but they must face the consequences of that choice.
-
Why would they CHOOSE to leave if they didn't have another job?
-
Good. I really hope that is the case because I am super pumped for him this season. I think the 2 games that come to mind for me were the 1st & last games this past season. 1st game they were playing a really good team with some future college players and he seemed to exaggerate the contact a bit for my taste... and the last game in the postseason when they were losing I seem to remember something about an injury that got a lot of talk during the game. Those could very well of been outliers and not the norm... or I could even have a foggy memory of it all.... that is just some of the things I remember and some of the things that I hear from time to time... again mostly from fans of other teams.
-
They do. They have to forfeit the rest of the money they could have potentially received from their choice. I don't follow coaches contracts much but I am sure some have to pay back portions (signing bonus if that is a thing for coaches). If they choose to go to another school that effects their legacy and future employment. Just because they don't have to sit out a year doesn't mean they don't have to live with the consequences of said choice. *** Also a note I never said that a player has to live with their choice, they just have to live with the consequences of that choice and all future choices. They commit to a school that doesn't mean they have to just live with that... it means if they make another choice to change schools then there are consequences to those choices and that is what they have to live with.
-
I am with Wayne on this.... They had their chance to make a choice and if they want to make another choice to transfer that is fine but there are repercussions to making that choice (sitting a year). I do however think there should be a change to the Hardship transfer rules that specifically allow transfers immediately with out sitting for any coaching change. If the facts that led the kid to choose school A change based on something out of their control then they should be able to choose again, but if they are sad they aren't getting the playing time sorry for them. The situation of not being noticed in high school so going to a smaller school and then blowing up and wanting to transfer to a bigger school are a bit different and I find it hard to find an answer for this problem, but I don't believe free agency is the answer.
-
Thanks for the info, I have seen him a few times and seemed to be really bothered by contact... not necessarily avoiding it but it seemed to get in his head if somebody roughed him up a bit. Seemed to really exaggerate contact and injury... There is a big difference in high school ball and College ball though so hopefully that is all coached out of him... I liked Thomas Bryant but don't want more of those type of antics.

Don't like this at all. Makes it way tougher on the coaches, and like already mentioned there will be an outcry when players are continually recruited over... So will that player have to sit a season if he goes to a different school? I would think yes... so a player that believes he is good enough for the NBA but doesn't get drafted then has to sit out the next season (assuming the original school doesn't keep the scholly open). Or if they cut an incoming recruit to keep the original player.... At some point these "kids" need to learn there are consequences to any decision made in life, and you have to weigh the options ahead of time. There are no do-overs (well i guess there are now)

Prediction League RESULTS Thread

BUMP..... Just as a Reminder of who won last year and how everybody else finished.... Good luck this season!!! -
Are you insinuating Romeo is a little soft? It wouldn't be the first time I have heard that around my area, but mostly from fans of other teams....
-
You guys are making me think my expectations this year may be too high.... I would expect to be 8-1 in those games.... with Duke being the most likely loss, and I guess at Arkansas wouldn't surprise me completely but I don't expect to lose any of those home games....
-
I am sure it could vary greatly from year to year but.... most of our weekday games last year started at 7.... We only had 2 9pm games last year, 2 8pm start times, & 1 8:30pm And Duke last year was a 9:30 start time which was he latest of the season.

He was the only person I felt comfortable when he was going to the FT line for a bit in the early season.... That is a scary thing for me to remember!

Exploring Potential Neutral-Site Locations
Str8Hoosiers replied to MisterBigRig's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Actually they can now. The Yum was in trouble financially and they have amended the Lease Agreement. Yum Center is a state owned facility and not owned by UofL. UofL used to have veto power and did the majority of the scheduling however now as long as UofL doesn't have a game scheduled that day the Yum center can schedule anything else they want in the arena... including UK or any other basketball games. -
Exploring Potential Neutral-Site Locations

None of those seem neutral to me.... Not that I would have a problem with any of those games, but just because a game isn't at a home arena doesn't make it neutral to me (Yes I know officially it counts as neutral). I have heard Rumors of the IU vs UK game being played at Yum Center in Louisville, KY. That would be perfect for me. -
Oh I hope not.... If we are starting 4 guys that weren't on the team last year I really don't think that would be good.... We are not that team... I think Fitzner could start, and Romeo is all but a given.... other than that the other 3 can't be new to the team... not with the system Archie installs and I know it will be easier to learn for the new freshmen that are a "blank slate" but still....

2018-2019 Rotation Discussion Thread
Str8Hoosiers replied to Brass Cannon's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I was going to ask who all was on campus? Seems strange the Freshmen would already be there since they are still in High School and haven't graduated yet (At least Romeo, IDK about school schedules up north). I would also assume Morgan isn't on campus since he is traveling around working out for NBA teams. (I realize Morgan wasn't mentioned as being there, but I am saying that changes the Starting 5). When is the year over for IU? I would assume many will take at least a little time away to go home etc. -
OK not the QB I preferred but I am coming around to the Wyoming mindset.... Allen can sling it, work some more on accuracy and this could be the QB to keep us in the playoffs every year and take over once Brady retires!
