I seriously have no idea how the general keeps up on all this stuff and is the first to find it. It's not just in basketball, football is covered too, and just about anything else that might be going on in IU athletics.

A top ten prospect in the class of 2016, De’Ron Davis (Aurora) is a total package on both ends of the court. The forward from Colorado has a polished post game and a high motor making him a force in the paint. Along with his inside game, Davis can also stretch the floor knocking down mid-range jumpers with ease. Davis already has plenty of high major interest and also holds offers from Arkansas, Colorado, Indiana, and Purdue. Keep a close eye on the Colorado Hawk and stay tuned for more of the John Lucas Midwest Invitational Camp coming soon, from Scarberry Media.

    Always enjoy these topics!

    Best Case Scenario:

     - IU makes a run to the Elite 8, and finishes in the Top 3 of the Big10.  IU has a ton of talent and depth, and even though there is a lot of inexperience, it comes together during the Big10 Season and takes everyone by storm.  Noah Vonleh is the Freshman Big10 POY and 1st Team All-Big10, with Sheehey and Yogi as 1st or 2nd Team All Big10.  Robinson provides the much needed depth at both guard spots, and becomes a started to let Gordon come off the bench with great veteran presence.  Hanner and Fischer are better than expected, and take over the 5 spot.  Not to mention, Hollowell making a big Freshman to Sophomore jump!

    Worst Case Scenario:

     - IU is a bubble team but makes the NIT because of their weak non-conference schedule.  They finish 8th in the Big10 because of the youth and inexperience, and struggle to find an identity.  The injury bug is already getting at this team, with Vonleh, Fischer, Williams, and Robinson coming back from summer injuries, while Jurkin and Etherington fight their way back from injuries last season.  Vonleh, Yogi, and Sheehey are the only contributors for this team with any consistency, and no one else steps up to help them.  Hollowell and Hanner still not reaching their potential, and having trouble getting comfortable in the rotation.  Gordon and Robinson struggle to provide quality guard depth to compliment Yogi.  Shooting is too much of a weakness where opposing defenses sag and play off of everyone.

    Overall:

    Best Case - Elite8 and Top 3 Big10 Finish
Worst Case - NIT Tourny and injuries

    My prediction for this season:

     - 5th in the Big10, and a 3rd Round (I still call it the 2nd round, before the Sweet16) nail-biting loss to a very good team that makes it to the Final Four.  Reason, this team is so talented and athletic, and will be a good defensive and rebounding team that will be great at transition.  That will be what we are known for.  We need guys outside of Sheehey, Hollwell, and Etherington who can shoot consistently from deep.  If we get that, we will go further IMO in the Tourny and Big10.  However, I still think it will plague us a lot this season.

Yesterday I was thinking about the following comparison:

11-12   JHU VJ VO CW  CZ WS (DE MR TP RA DM AE KB MC....)
13-14   YF EG WS JHO NV (LF/HP) (TW-SR-DD-PJ-AE-CH) I have no inside info & I never place a ceiling on what any member of a team can contribute from any given role.

    Thoughts:

    1)  Relatively a low expectation from fan base compared to last year; yet similar to 2011-12.

    2)  The athleticism of our bench is very exciting to see develop.  It will help provide more defensive stops in the final tournament compared to previous years.

    3)   When looking at the first 5-6 players individually I feel where the 2013-14 guys come up short the make up for it in other areas.  This includes the VO -WS comparison.  In many ways its unfair to compare any player to Vic; however, looking at Will's leadership & what the kind of influence he has on all freshman and sophomores is tremendous.  He can say what he wants to the media about "not being the guy" & "everyone is treated equal", but if he sees a lull in any aspect of what is  to be accomplished in a practice... they are not all "equal"  compared to how Will will voice his opinions about required changes & additional effort.

    4)  The last of Will's quote on media day fires me up as much as anything that has been said or written about this years team: " ...but we have guys on our team who can fill those voids.  I truely think so.  I'm not saying we have two lottery picks on our team,  but I think there are a lot of guys who are willing to do things that maybe some of the guys on our team last year weren't willing to do."

     Video of Will's interview

    5)  Regular season results will not be as good as last 2 years.  The run at the dance will be better.

TJ will be visiting on November 15 when we play Samford.  When asked about what he is looking forward to most he had the following to say:

“I guess to see how they actually play and what the coaches let them do out there,” Leaf said. “Do the coaches have handcuffs on them or do the coaches let them play? Just overall, how they coach them and how the players react to their coaching I think is what I’m looking forward to the most.”

Sounds like TJ is being influenced in a very positive way as a young teenager. I love to see the appreciation and anticipation of Indiana basketball from this family.

“He’s probably just as excited as me about it,” Leaf said. “He grew up there always watching the games and wishing he could wear one of those uniforms. He’s edging me to go there, not really, but thats where he sees that I would fit the best right now. We’ll see.”

maxwell reacted to ccgeneral in Max Hoetzel
About three weeks ago, Wilbraham and Monson (Mass.) Academy student Max Hoetzel was at study hall when his basketball coach, Chris Sparks, and Indiana assistant Kenny Johnson walked into the room.

They came with a simple message: Indiana head coach Tom Crean was on campus, and he wanted to see Hoetzel work out. Crean and Johnson were originally on campus to watch Goodluck Okonoboh before he travelled to Ohio State and UNLV, but Sparks had convinced Crean to watch Hoetzel.

After all, Sparks knew IU had needed a shooter for the 2014 class. And he had one in the 6-foot-7 Hoetzel.

Sparks and Johnson had cleared Hoetzel to practice with school administrators by the time they confronted him at study hall. He then left for the gym and practiced under Crean’s watchful eye. It was the first contact Hoetzel had with IU’s coaching staff.

“It was such a humbling experience, I mean, coach Crean is a big deal,” Hoetzel said. “But on the other hand, you can’t really think about it. You just gotta do what you do.”

Three months before then, though, Hoetzel had no idea he would soon be talking to one of the top programs in the nation.

An under-recruited forward, Hoetzel was going into his senior year at Calabasas (Calif.) High School with offers from Utah, Utah State, Pacific, Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, Boise State and Davidson, among others.

But then, Hoetzel had learned his parents were planning on moving to the Santa Barbara area. Instead of starting fresh at another high school, he decided to attend a preparatory school. He originally thought of attending Oak Hill Academy, but his AAU coach, Christian Aurand, recommended Wilbraham and Monson. After all, they needed a player at the small forward position this season and Hoetzel fit that description.

Hoetzel announced he’d be attending WMA in early August, and since arriving in Wilbraham as a reclassified member of the 2015 class with the option of graduating in 2014 as well, his recruitment has taken off.

“You always have to play at a high level at all times here,” Hoetzel said. “At Calabasas, I could sometimes go through the motions at practice and stuff. But you know, I’m really being pushed out here and it’s a good thing. It’s paying dividends right now.

“I knew my recruitment might take off probably around when Florida started talking to me.”

At WMA, Hoetzel has had the opportunity to take advantage of his “live in the gym” mentality. Since tearing an ACL during his sophomore year of high school and having a subsequent meniscus surgery, Hoetzel said he feels as if he has had to work extra hard to get to where he is now.

He’s already improved on his biggest strengths — shooting, driving to the basket and his defense — and he’s also started to combat his weaknesses with Sparks’ help.

“Coach Sparks has a lot of great workouts and he’s coached at the college level, so he knows what it takes,” Hoetzel said. “He really believes in me, so that’s also a great factor. When you have someone who really believes in you, it makes the whole thing easier. If you work hard, you get what you deserve.”

“He’s a lot like a Chandler Parsons type,” Sparks said. “I’d compare him to Kyle Korver too, but that’d be selling him short on his athletic ability. He’s a great kid.”

Though Hoetzel has yet to play in a single game this season, he has already received additional offers from St. John’s, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania. Florida, Iowa State and Harvard have expressed significant interest, and even Kansas has called Sparks recently to ask about him.

But Hoetzel’s contact with Indiana has stood out. Though IU has yet to extend an offer, since the day Crean and Johnson observed his workout, Hoetzel and Johnson have exchanged texts each other “about every day.” Johnson has spoken to both Hoetzel’s parents. And Crean plans on returning to WMA to watch Hoetzel, possibly as early as this week.

The Hoosiers are recruiting him for 2014, and Hoetzel said he would be ready for the challenge.

“I would really, really consider it, especially since it’s Indiana,” Hoetzel said. “The past, the program, the coaching, I’d definitely really consider it. But it’s all about the fit. I want to come in somewhere where I can really play and exploit my strengths. If that does happen with IU, it will be wonderful.”

Many might not know this but Peter's father is very ill. Coach said in the after Hoosier Hysteria presser that they were working on the paper work and he would return to see his dad as soon as they could get it arraigned. Coach said it would be the last time Peter would see his dad, so it sounds really bad. Prayers for Peter, his father, and family.
