This is honestly the best thing I've heard all day, and I'm pretty excited about the DeVries smoke.

I want it to be Brad Stevens as much as anyone. But the reality is that: 1) Being a college coach is a much harder, higher pressure job than what Stevens is doing now. He actually is getting to enjoy his wealth; few college coaches get to do that until they're retired. 2) The IU job just simply isn't what it used to be. It can become a great job again, but as of right now it's not a major destination for most coaches. That said, we have more resources than all but a handful of programs, so there's no limit to what a very competent coach can achieve here. As far as I can tell, DeVries is a better X's and O's coach than anyone we've hired in the last 25 years aside from maybe Kelvin Sampson (and it has taken him a long time to get to where he's currently at). He's also a really solid recruiter who has brought quite a bit of talent to West Virginia despite relatively meager NIL resources compared to Indiana. This hire should not disappoint anyone. I'm already pumped to see Tucker DeVries in an Indiana jersey. Let's do this.

You massively overrate this job. DeVries is an excellent coach. I don't believe it's him, but if it is I'll be happy. Proven track record, can recruit talent, has elevated the program wherever he's gone. And has a cool name. Maybe not an A+ hire but I'd give it a solid B. Certainly raises the floor immediately at IU. Who knows what the ceiling would be, as he's not been at a high major program long enough to establish a tournament résumé.

The IUBB subreddit is useless for anything of this type. No one who is truly an "insider" posts there. Typically you just come across regurgitations of what's been rumored elsewhere.

No idea. Have not heard any "buzz" around Williams. Certainly would be out of left field. Wouldn't be a big fish but who knows.

I’ll also add: if this signing was made today or very recently, I highly doubt it’s someone currently coaching in the tournament. Which leads me to believe it isn’t a current college coach. Which leads me to a few names: Brad Stevens, Jay Wright, Tony Bennett, and Billy Donovan. I only find Stevens and Donovan to be particularly likely of those two. I could be dead wrong. Just sharing my theories. Carry on.

It’s not like he suddenly stopped having sources but I don’t blame anyone Curry Hicks on X also has said that credible sources have told him it’s done and IU has someone signed. My guess? It’s not DeVries. I don’t think that smoke came out of nowhere. I think it was targeted. He just met with Iowa today and walked away without a contract. I believe his agent started linking his name to the IU job in order to induce Iowa to piss or get off the pot and up their offer to him.

Don’t get your hopes up for either of those guys. Especially Pearl. We are not in talks to hire away the coach of the #1 overall seed lol. No way man.

Actually Trevor Andershock was the one who got a couple calls about DeVries. Rabby is just reporting based off that. I do believe this is agent driven but I could see IU making this move so I wouldn’t count it out. Far more believable than the Brownell smoke, which reeked to high heaven.

Would be absolutely thrilled for this to be true but I sincerely doubt this is remotely in the cards. Only thing that makes me pause and think about it is that Auburn lost 3 of their last 4 games. Could their coach have been slightly distracted? Nonetheless I just don’t see this happening. Would love to be wrong.

I mean, that has always been the most likely outcome. And I’m one of the delusional types who thinks Brad is on the table.

I, for one, refuse to believe that Dolson gave Brad 6 weeks to make up his mind, with the decision hinging on the whims of his 16 year old daughter. There is far too much hinging on this hire, including Dolson’s livelihood, for him to put this in her hands.

I listened to the Tom Crean interview with the Hysterics (I can’t stand them but just wanted to listen to him, and it was absolutely worth a listen) and he described how the hiring process went down with IU. They met at a neutral site away from Milwaukee and Bloomington, in a hotel. Everything very hush-hush. The deal was in place immediately after his Marquette team was knocked out of the tournament. There had been backchannel discussions before in-person meetings. Marquette didn’t know any of it was going on until he’d signed.

Interesting. I wouldn’t love the Buzz Williams hire if we went that route but we could certainly do worse. He's never coached somewhere with the sort of resources Indiana has, but he’s also never had to deal with the pressure of a job like this. He’s a decent coach and I’d be willing to give him a shot. Assuming that this flight means anything; in all likelihood it does not.
