They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
AH1971 replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Jesus dude, it’s about volume. Quit looking at raw percentages. Assuming Carlyle and Rice are healthy and play the entire season, 1.5-2 makes a game at around 35% for each is ~55-70 made 3’s per player. Xavier Johnson and CJ Gunn COMBINED made 28 3 pointers last year. Did you seriously think you were clever posting this as some kind of gotcha? -

Not relying on Trey Galloway to be your lead guard for 35 games on top of Gabe Cupps being asked to run the show for 75% of the conference season should go a long way. Rice/Carlyle/Mgbako is a significantly better trio than JHS/Galloway/Kopp and Reneau/Ballo is a better front court than Thompson/Ballo, at least offensively. -

Unless Rice/Carlyle develop some kind of hitch in their shot and/or just completely forget how to shoot a basketball and lose all confidence, both will be more than adequate perimeter shooters next year. Will they hit at the magical 40 number next year? Probably not, don’t need too. 35% on 1.5-2 makes a game and IU will have a top 15 offense. -

Objectively, I think Carlyle has a much higher overall ceiling than Rice. -

Johnell Davis denied admission into Michigan. Sounds like he didn’t graduate after 4 years at FAU. https://x.com/zyavierr/status/1781840927549473189?s=46 -

He’s likely the worst defender in the entire B10, and not joking either. I don’t know if he’ll even see the floor enough at Nebraska to light anybody up. Nebraska lost a lot in the backcourt this offseason so the avenue to immediate playing time is cleared there, but he was going to struggle to get minutes here next year. -

Yeah I don't know what specific role he gives you offensively but for a team who likes to switch as much as Indiana in Woodson system, Thiero can guard 1-4 and challenge anybody at the rim defensively. -

I lied. Josh Hubbard-Miss St and Marcus Banks UMBC were the only other two to shoot above 35% on the needed volume to qualify. -

Reed Shepphard is the only one I remember off the top of my head. The other two were from schools I'd never heard of. -

There were 3 freshman who shot over 35% from 3 on volume last year. You'll quickly find those kind of freshman don't grow on trees. I believe you'll find even the most prolific 3 point shooters improved steadily throughout their careers. Expect the same for all 3 of our soon to be sophomores. -

A skilled 5 who can play 10 mpg that serves depth purposes. Every good team has that. -

He's got two years of eligibility left. With Galloway graduating and Mgbako potentially moving on after the end of next season, I see avenue for quality minutes if he puts in the work and sees things through for his senior season. -
Ballo is Udoka Azubuike who played for Kansas a few years back. Was an AA in 2020 on almost identical numbers to that of Ballo. Drafted in the first round after his senior year as well

I'd prefer Malone and Humrichous but wouldn't be mad with Essegian either. -

I'm here and BTownqb has it exactly right. Shot-making, especially from of our guards, was non-existent last year, and yes that includes the ability to shoot from the perimeter. But how many guys were effective shooting off the bounce in PnR? How many could get to the rim when they wanted? On top of converting? How many times did they get to the line because of their dynamics? That was by far and away our biggest issue last season, not "We PLaYeD THrOuGH THe POsT". -

We've already had a shooter-first in Woodson's system, Parker Stewart. And while he was a good 3 point shooter by percentage, that's about all he could do. Couldn't dribble, couldn't get to the hole, couldn't create for others, etc Woodson's system is all about 1 and 2 man games. Guards have to be able to win 1 on 1 matchups vs their defenders in order for the system to work. We've had one guard in 3 seasons who could consistently win those matchups. Carlyle and Rice is the most dynamic backcourt duo CMW will have had to date. -

That's my assessment as well. I think both Carlyle and Rice will be ~35% on 5-6 attempts a game which translates to 1.5-2 makes a game and then Mgbako I think will be ~37% on 7-8 attempts which again translates to 2.75-3 makes a game. On the low end that comes out to just under 200 made 3's. That alone eclipses last years total of 166 made 3's just from 3 players. Those guys are going to get a ton of looks next year with Reneau and Ballo who are almost automatic under the rim. If Rice and Carlyle can hit open 3's next year (something our back court couldn't do at all last season) this will be a very tough offense to stop. Opposing defenders aren't going to sag off of guys like Rice or Carlyle, they'll get run out of the gym if they do. -

Carlyle who might give Reneau a run for his money on leading scorer if he can’t stay on the court. -
He admitted he didn't know what inside-out meant the other day, this isn't going anywhere.

I think every leaf in the forest points to him coming here and he's doing the exact same thing Rice did this last weekend; silently committed awhile ago and is taking his visit to make sure he doesn't absolutely hate the place before making it official. No intel on Malone other than IU still needs post depth and it's going to be a challenge to find another big with only 10-15 mpg available. Round out the class with Malone and Humrichous and it's likely the best haul you could have asked for.
