I guess I don't understand why people think there would be so many clandestine meetings in Florida for a deal like this. Yes, I think people would want to meet face to face a couple times, but most negotiating can take place over Zoom these days. There's no reason for people this busy to be wasting hours at a time to fly to/from Florida for a discussion that could be held over Zoom in 30 minutes.

If you have to ask, the answer is most likely no.

Never!

Just to be clear, I didn't intend to suggest that Shertz isn't a good coach or won't ultimately be successful. I was just observing that he was last year's McCollum, and now he's not even on our radar. There are plenty of coaches who have won big at lower levels without it translating to the P4 level. Bo Ryan was the exception, not the rule.

Last year around this time lots of folks were hot for Josh Schertz, convinced he was the next big thing while he was guiding Indiana State to a gaudy record in the MVC. Fast forward one year, and he's sitting at 14-11 in the A10. So while McCollum is having a great season at Drake, there's no guarantee that he will win at a higher, let alone the highest, level.

The atmosphere at the first game is going to be crazy. When do people start lining up for Hoosier Hysteria?
-
Yeah, Trilly was a thing during last year's speculation we'd fire Woody. Not during his hire.

So we're hiring Henry Cavill as our next coach, and he's moving the bench down to the student/band side of the court?!?
-
If we're dreaming, how about this scenario... IU announces Brad Stevens as the next HC on March 17th. Meanwhile, Woody cooks up an NC State-esque Cinderella run to the Final Four, as his swan song. So we get the best of both worlds...a deep March run while Brad simultaneously works the portal to build a Top 20 team for next year.

Where are we going? Edit: It was a joke.

Would K-State be neutral court too? Need a marquee OOC game in the Hall...
-
Good to know, thanks. When I run the selection committee I'll be sure to change that...

Are there really examples of teams squeezing in with 5 losses of 18+ points? That seems pretty extreme to me, even if you're right about the general rule.
-
I would think that the nature of some of our losses (Louisville, Gonzaga, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin) will definitely factor against us if we're right on the bubble...

If we get into the second tier options, how would people rate the following: Buzz Williams Mick Cronin Ben McCollum
-
If it's Dusty, what are the odds he could flip Braylon Mullins?
-
That's fair, but I will say that directly lying to a BoT member (if the rumor is accurate) is a next level smokescreen!
-
Any other insiders hear something similar? @ap2345, @JerryYeagley23, @RoadToZion? (I know @Chris007 will respond in time...didn't want to leave you out!)

It's crazy how much contradictory info flies during a search like this. Stevens is interested! Stevens has already declined! If I were sane, I'd just check back in next month...
-
But we could also do a lot worse. He wouldn't be in my top 3, but he isn't too far beyond that.

I think most would probably agree that all else being equal, Kelvin Sampson is a better coach than John Beilein. But I also think most would agree that, in hindsight, IU would have been better off hiring Beilein than Sampson. And that's because all else is never equal, and it can never just be about coaching strength. You always have to weigh that against the other factors.

Totally agree. If UK and Louisville never gave him a serious look, that says all you need to know.

Lord only knows how many times are we going to have to debate Beard's DV arrest over the next 5 weeks...
-
Thanks for these. The fact that he specified that he really misses the teaching aspect of coaching in this second one certainly suggests someone who might prefer college to pro coaching.
