Coach Search 2017 IU Candidate: Billy Donovan (OKC Thunder)
bigrod replied to Feathery's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I guess if he really knew as much as he thought he did, he would be coaching somewhere instead of trying to get everyone to believe he knows everything about coaching. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -
The OG thing is a convenient excuse for anyone not paying attention. Crean used it himself numerous times, always followed by, "But we're not making excuses." Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

That would be funny if it weren't so true! Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Not sure why I even turned on Dakich today. He is the epitome of a guy who controls the conversation and pushes it in convenient directions for his incoherent arguments. He doesn't make any connection between the team's inability to do what Crean wants them to do, and Crean's coaching abilities. That's just stupid. He keeps saying things that any logical person would see in total opposition to his argument. The more I listen to him, the more I understand why he likes Crean. Their logic is on the same level. I guess for me, it's not so much about Championships as their coaching philosophy and their view of IU as a destination job. My personal opinion is that Hoiberg doesn't emphasize defense as much as I'd like to see. While I think he is a better coach than Crean, I'm not convinced he's a lot better. I really think IU fans want a coach who stresses fundamentals and defense, and really just team basketball. Personally, I would be pretty happy with Archie. It's truly insane. He has been here 9 years. We know what we have. He has gotten us out of the depths, I'll give him that, but as far as taking us to the next step, he has failed. This was the year to finally show everyone and he has failed miserably. Say what you want about injuries (why do we have so many every freaking year?), but the wheels were falling off way before that was an issue. I've said for years that Crean can't handle success. Some of his worst years were when expectations are high. The team takes on the personality of its coach. We are a rudderless mess unless we have a strong leader to lean on because Crean certainly isn't doing it. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Sorry, that's my sarcasm. The talking heads say we are just crazy fans who don't understand what a great coach we have. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

And there isn't one coming in next year either. Does anyone really see how we are going to improve next year? I mean, I know we are all extremely illogical to want him gone, but our biggest need is a PG, and he isn't recruiting one. With the anticipated losses and the known players coming in, I don't see how next year gets any better. Unless, of course, someone can take all the talent we have and actually do something with it. I took that comment to be a swipe at the fans, essentially saying the fans blame him for everything. That's the way it is when you're in charge. Time to put the big boy pants on, Tommy. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Absolutely no reason we should be falling off a cliff like this. This team still has talent, unlike most of the talking heads want us to believe. The fact that we are still making the same mistakes we did at the beginning of the season, along with the fact that our biggest deficiency is point guard play, and that we have no point guard help coming next year either, all lie with the head coach. Let me ask you this: What will change next year? Our biggest need is a point guard, and Tommy can lay blame wherever he wants, but he didn't bring one in last year, and there isn't one coming next year. His positionless system will be no better next year. Most likely, it will be worse. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Crean's rambling incoherent nonsense: We're not going to use injuries as an excuse, but I'll continue to bring them up. Even though, I still have 2-5 stars in the lineup, and a couple 4 stars, I'll keep bringing it up because everything has to be perfect for my system to work. I'm going to act like our guard play is a new issue instead of something I've had all season to fix. Our defense has been horrible all year, but now I'm going to point it out. Turnovers have been an issue each and every year I have been here, but now it's because I have immature guards. I never sit players when they aren't doing what I want them to. I mean, unless they are playing lights out. I'm great at pointing out our problems. I'll continue to point them out until someone figures out how to fix them. What gets me is Crean acts like these are new developments. This has been going on all season (actually, several seasons). Even when we beat Kansas, we were putting the welcome mat out in the lane. Blame the players all you want, but if the coach accepts mediocrity, the players are more than willing to accept it. If the coach allows players to lose their man and just pick up the closest guy, the players think it is the norm. If he thinks these habits have developed over the last few games, he simply hasn't been paying attention. Name one time when Crean has sat a player down for this kind of play. It has been consistent throughout the year and he has been unwilling to motivate with the bench. What motivation do the players have to change? As long as he states the problem but doesn't come up with solutions, he should definitely be held accountable. It is his job to find solutions. Period. Not only that, but the kid goes in and works his ass off, and our offense doesn't allow feeding the post when he's open. We've got to try to get those high percentage heaves from the 3. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Katz is clueless about this. The wheels were falling off well before OG went out. Blackmons loss just allowed us to play some decent D for a couple game. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

How about: Tom, every year your teams are among the worst in the B1G in turnovers and defense. Are all of your teams immature? Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Tom's in his presser blaming the players, but taking "full responsibility" like he always does. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

It's funny how many ex-coach/commentators are trying so hard to convince us we should love him. He can flat out coach a top three team into an also-ran baby! Brilliant! Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Knight was definitely an unknown, but he was highly regarded. He had been offered head coaching jobs at Florida, Wisconsin, and others were looking. Different times back then though... I'd be all for a young up and comer who teaches the fundamentals and team concepts. Maybe that's Archie... Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

I know someone who spoke to Stevens at a game. Now this was last year at about this point in the season when IU was doing better than expected. I don't remember exactly how he approached the question, but he asked him about his interest in IU. He flat out said he had absolutely no interest and that we had a good coach. So this is my question: Is that just something coaches say? There is no way he can truly believe that. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

You mean some teams actually use the non conference schedule to improve themselves and not just pad wins??? I love the Crean defenders trying to say everyone does it. Sure, everyone sprinkles in a few, but not like Tommy does. Top 10 or bottom 100. How is that making the team better? Nebraska answered that question. I started watching IU basketball during the 1981 season. Obviously, that season ended well, and I've been hooked ever since. I've seen some really good years and struggled through some not so good years. I'm definitely not an influential booster, but I have traveled the 3 hour trip to Bloomington for many games over the years, and have contributed to the University in other ways. Ive sustained a great appreciation for IU basketball through RMK's final few years when it seemed he had lost interest, through the Davis years, to the Sampson debacle. Through all of that, I have to say that I'm at a point where if Glass is content with these mediocre bi-polar seasons, I've lost my passion. I can find other ways to spend my time and money if he feels this is a satisfactory product. The days of being a fan through thick and thin have gone the way of a player playing with the same team for their whole career. It's all about the $$ now, and I'll find plenty of other places to spend mine. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app
