And RMK is still worshipped. Well, except by the woke, holier than thou crowd. I agree RMK's situation started them on their path. RMK ran a clean program, and his kids went to class though. RMK did have his own brand of discipline though when the kids goofed up. But so did most good coaches back then. He ended up being just too old school and behind in the times in some aspects. The admin just wanted to make sure they got someone "nice" and PC. And I'm all for running a clean program and following the rules. But I also don't have a problem with ones that push the envelop so long as they are not coloring too far outside the lines. At least we have good women's BB, and football now.. oh the irony.

I went to IU in the late 80s, and partied with players for about 2 years straight. Not BFFs with them or anything, but they were around. One of my buddies had players at his apartment almost every weekend, and my old RA was in tight with some of the older players and we hung at Killroys regularly. My freshman year, several were written up for drinking in the dorms. One for being in a room with a funny smell lol. Never got out. My soph year, several were ticketed at WKs and VVs for underaged drinking. Never got out. I remember 2 players jumping off the deck at VVs with a pony keg at L5 when the partied got raided. One of the players was very well known for beer bonging weekly at WKs. Weed was all around in those days. Not all players were weed smokers and big drinkers, but several were. I don't recall any getting suspended. I'm sure Knight ran their legs off or sat them at times if it got back to him, but there was never a huge public stink.

Nah. I was around players in the late 80s. You wouldn't believe some of the crap that went on. And don't think coaches know everything that is going on. RMK didn't know half the stuff. In Sampson's case, Gordon himself said Sampson intervened and tried to stop things. I get it, you have this lofty image of how things are. It's not reality. There's a lot of grey. Could he have done more, maybe. Fact is, we don't know what went on. We don't know what he knew. We all have just a few facts, and have made our own assumptions.

What exactly, aside from rumors and assumption, did Sampson do. Had some bad kids? Happens at all places. Some kids smoked weed? happens at a lot of places. Let me tell you, RMK had some of those kinds of kids too. You just didn't hear about it.

Yup, there are several areas that can be seen as both pros and cons. You kinda double counted your first and sixth pros. And the easiest con to fix is making our facilities top 10. It was only a few years ago the IU Varsity Club set new fund raising records. Same with general donations to IU. Mark gave 5M 6 years ago for the media center. Wouldn't doubt if he's the one that ponied up for the buy out. Regardless, I'm sure there's donors out there that could/would fun better facilities all around. Irsay should pony up some too. Pretty sure his daughter went to IU. I know he gave a mil to IU Med. What I find interesting, is that only a little less than half see the job as a top 10 job now. And that's coming from a bunch of uber fans on an IU message board. Now consider how the rest of the nation sees us. And how 16-17 year old recruits see us. I'm a little more pessimistic because I've worked nationally and internationally for the last 25 years. My intl friends only think about UNC, Duke, KY, Louisville, and a few others when thinking big time college BB. That was not the case 10-15 years ago. And I have a ton of friends in the S and W. IU is pretty much an afterthought, even though most understand the blueblood history. ND is experiencing a similar issue with FB, but different. While they are making it to the big dance, they're getting blown out, and most non-ND fans scream overrated.

simple question. Do you think the next coach at UNC and/or Duke will start their first year being the 8th or worse paid coach? I'm going to guess they'll start in the top 5

What your saying is IU is more attractive than UNC or Duke? You just said top tier coaches and type A personalities don't think like that.
