Defense Preparing for Defending National Champs
MartintheMopMan replied to KelleyHoosh's topic in Indiana Hoosiers Football
Kid is like 7'5 450 lbs. He's tough to bring down. -
Two good quotes from a Land-Grant Holy Land article about the game... "It's not an exaggeration to say that there are few things more consistent in college football than Ohio State beating Indiana. The Hoosiers have not recorded an actual win over the Buckeyes since 1988. They have beaten Ohio State just twice since 1952. . . . Indiana, historically, hasn't come close. Since their 27-27 tie back in 1990, Indiana has come within seven points of Ohio State just three times, in 1991, 1993, and the famous 2012 shootout, which Ohio State won 52-49." and "Right now, the Hoosiers are 100th in the country in preventing explosive plays, a welcome sight for a Buckeye squad loaded with potential playmakers and looking to get back to more consistent offensive explosion. Their S&P+ defensive ratings in the 2nd and 4th quarters? 125 and 103 respectably, suggesting a lack of depth across the unit (they actually have a 27 ranked unit for the 3rd quarter). If that level of depth is showing wear and tear against G5 competition that doesn't even recruit especially well, it doesn't bode well for long battles with Ohio State's offensive line or Ezekiel Elliott. There's more. Indiana's 3rd down defense? 116 in the country, per S&P+. Standard downs? 110th. Their defensive havoc rating, or their ability to defend passes, get tackles for loss, and set up big defensive plays? Ranges from below average (77, DL havoc rate) to near the worst in the country (111th, linebacker havoc rate)."

(2016) SG Grant Gelon commits to IU

But nothing untrue? Seriously though, I can surely find some comments like that, and tons saying he was going to be an all-star. That's simply the nature of having a large group of diverse fans discussing a topic. I mean, who wants to go into the April or Priller thread and find the people talking about how Crean may have done it again with a diamond in the rough and how everyone was wrong last time they discounted whatever player. It's just the nature of discussions between multiple humans. -
If a large handful of teams currently ranked lose this weekend and we beat OSU then we could be ranked around 23rd, probably max of 20 and even that feels high. Depends on who loses.

And to build on this a little, do they have ill-informed fans? Absolutely, who doesn't? But, they also have a lot more very well-informed fans. I talked about this a little in the Defense thread when I mentioned how many resources they have available to get deep breakdowns of games and players. They have a very long and very rich football history, this leads to their fans studying the game closely because it's really enjoyable to tear apart every play of a game you just dominated. I would say without hesitation even their average fan has been to and watched more football games than any Indiana fan even outside of studying it deeper. And their serious fans are more numerous and everywhere. OSU is a football school, they know football. Indiana fans have shown great support these last couple of years. But, anything they know about schematics and deep football analysis comes from the NFL, because almost no one is examining IU games like that and even if they are, it isn't always easy to read or listen after a bad loss. All the basketball knowledge criticisms levied at other schools (often rightly) from Indiana fans should come to mind. I think generally, Indiana fans have a higher level of knowledge of the technical side of basketball than fans at most other non-blueblood schools. And I bet most would agree with me there. So, when we're dismissive of a game against Rutgers, no one thinks twice about it because we have the knowledge to back it up. It's the same thing here, but to an even greater degree because so much of football is the technical aspect, that's why we get so upset at a bad DC or OC, because we know that even with players who aren't the best, a good scheme can cover that up. OSU has a great coaching staff (most of whom will end up in the NFL in the next 5 years) to put together very good schemes and some incredible players to run them. And their fans know that. They had some hiccups in the first games, but they're also starting a quarterback who now has what, 6 games under his belt? He has improved mechanics and decision-making every time he steps on the field, and any Indiana fan who thinks we'll put this game away without some of the most incredible luck any team has ever experienced is delusional.

He's only one player. If we can't stretch the D with pass plays they're going to stuff him over and over because we'll be ridiculously easy to predict. If our wide receivers aren't all feeling as healthy as humanly possible and ready to play, Howard will not be able to break this D the way he has in the past. Let's not forget, this OSU defensive line isn't practicing against Cameron Walker, they're practicing against an RB who will be playing on Sundays. They understand the run. And, we can catch up so long as we aren't too far behind by then. I mean, we can't win every game by only playing 15 minutes. I'll admit here that OSU is my second favorite college football team (started dating my wife whose father is an alum and huge fan, needed stuff to talk about) and I follow them some and listen to their podcasts and they are completely unworried. Over 5ish hours of podcasts there was less than 30 minutes of talking about Indiana in their Indiana previews. But you know what? They totally had our number. They accurately talked about our weaknesses, pointed out their own strengths relative to those weaknesses, and laid out a simple game plan to score 700 points on us. From what I've seen and heard from our side, we're the ones who are just looking at the final scores/records of the first three games and thinking "Hey, these guys aren't so tough" but they really are. Our optimism for football is great and refreshing, but let's not pretend they should be scared of the second worst defense in the Big Ten missing one of our essential players. Or they should be afraid we'll score at will on the second best defense in the Big Ten. This game is at a totally different level than what we've seen so far, I'm just saying, stock extra beer.

(2016) SG Grant Gelon commits to IU
MartintheMopMan replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
They were? Who? Where? I literally never saw a single person say that. Everyone I saw talking about Hartman expected him to play the 6th man role and average about 12 to 15 minutes a game. I mean, no one really expected to have him be our starting post-defender because we aren't crazy people. Wait, are you sure you didn't see people expressing concern about his recent injury? "Oh boy, I hope he has a fast recovery, I don't know if he'll see the floor if he isn't able to play or practice until December!" -

I really hope all this playing down OSU by talking up how they barely beat NIU doesn't come back to bite us if they destroy us. "Man, regular IU is way worse than NIU!" -

Plus, those comments are dumb. There is no support to the assertion Indiana kids are smarter at basketball or love IU more or whatever it is that makes them the greatest recruits ever. -

Yeah. That appears to be the short version. I still don't have an opinion on him except that we should have slowed our recruitment a little. But, I do like the tenacity it takes to blatantly show-off like that. -

Oh, and I just remembered. The first thing I tried to do when I became a mini-mod was change your name back to Alaska Hoosier because I remembered my own troubles in changing my name. They had not given me that power, which I still believe to be an oversight. -

You did it first and I joined it (JuwantGrimesShakes or something similar). Thanks for nothing trendsetter. Though, no one told me I just had to pay a few bucks to be a VIP member and I could change back! -

Two good pulls from the article (I mean, you guys read it yourself, obviously from my posts my "good pulls" are vastly different than anyone elses) "As Crean took a seat on the first row of the bleachers amid several other mostly mid-major coaches, a couple of Gelon’s Indiana Elite teammates nudged him. “They were like, ‘Hit some 3s right there by Crean,’” Gelon said." BA as heck to see a D-1 coach show up to watch someone else (Eron Gordon) and move where you're taking your 3s from to be more impressive. And... "Basketball hero: Gelon’s hero growing up was former Duke star Jon Scheyer, who is now a Duke assistant. “I always tried to model myself after him,” Gelon said. “He’s always been my personal favorite. I was a few feet away from him in Vegas in July but we weren’t supposed to say anything to coaches so I kept my mouth shut.”" Doesn't that just give us the best picture of how Indiana high school basketball players view the IUBB history everyone wants to go on about? Scheyer wasn't even born when we last won a championship. I mean, let's not even talk about how the high school players themselves weren't born until after our boom period ended, the players they grew up watching weren't even born until after our boom period ended. This is an IUBB commit, Indiana native, sister goes to IU, talking to an Indianapolis paper, and he breaks out a Duke player and coach as his basketball hero. -
I'll settle for not-a-podcast even if reading is hard. This is a really good site, too bad he doesn't get more viewership to have a better community (top post in "popular" has 9 comments and it's their equivalent of Pickems). Hey, 41! Hire everyone from this site! He should be using gifs though instead of videos.

Great memory. Shake ruined my old name and cost me like 300 posts.Never change your username for recruits guys, you can't change them back for like... a year. -
I certainly hope so. Man, I wish we were better historically. Ohio State (and Oregon) has so many great in-depth podcasts that really tear apart advanced stats to the same degree that I get with pro-teams I follow. We don't even have as deep of analysis for our basketball team. I would love to have people who have the time to rewatch games and break them down for me so I can know how much to worry. "This game is the biggest game in the recent history of Indiana football, though it doesn't really matter to us"

Though, still one of the worst teams in adjusted defense. Though we jumped to 101!

I'm just saying, maybe Dakich can help Urban out with some deep balls. I mean, really show him how to take a sack. Give him the ole stiff arm. Split the uprights. Show him the spread formation. He could really go all the way after beating his man. And now, just for people who know OSU football almost as well as they know IU.... He is going to hang on sloopy. Ring that victory bell. Enter buckeye grove. Go through the tunnel of pride. I mean, he will get up on Hayes, Woody.
