True. And Sampson, Scheyer and Hurley all have 4 man classes coming in. You develop a roster building philosophy and you adhere to it. Personally, I think coaches who eschew recruiting high school kids are gonna struggle to develop a sustainable culture.

Archie Miller doing Archie Miller things. Refusing to run a double at Robbie Avila as he’s getting literally anything he wants. SLU currently up 14 on Rhode Island with 9 mins left.
-
Actually, other than his most basic premise that a solid guy would do well here, a point USPS makes all the time and I agree with, I think the rest of the article is utter, lazy trash. Including, but not limited to: 1) If you have the resources to reach out to demonstrated elite guys and you don’t that is objectively irresponsible. UK and UL didn’t start with Pope and Kelsey, we know those weren’t their 1st choices, they finished there. And comparing an IU hiring process to Vandy is simply stupid. 2) Other than Stevens, and not reaching out to him would be a straight failure of due diligence, what were the other failed home run hires that resulted in Crean, Miller and Woodson? The Crean process was somewhat elongated because it was such a mess. But the others were perfectly normal and there is literally no evidence at all that either of those hires was the result of wasting time on some unattainable name candidate. Those hires were unsuccessful for completely different reasons. As a matter of fact, the argument he makes here was the exact argument for Archie and I guarantee he was down with that hire at the time. 3) Every fanbase wants a name they know. Every one. Every time. No exceptions. This fanbase is not unique. 4) Brownell was a terrible choice to make his point because he’s a replacement-level coach and they can absolutely do better. So he would be justifiably disappointing.
-
Yup. I’m an inveterate process guy. Any name that pops up my 1st thought is what process would land there. With Brownell the only process that lands on him ahead of roughly 15 other guys would have to include a “from Indiana” filter. Otherwise you can’t get to him. So, yeah, this screams agent hunting a new deal.

Based on what?

If Otz can be had I’m not even sure you conduct a search. He’s that easy. But can he actually be had?

Been thinking about Beard a bit the last couple of days and I think dude could be at Ole Miss for a while. How many jobs are out there that: 1) are really gonna seriously consider him, 2) have an AD that is either in enough trouble to take the gamble or so secure that they can, 3) have a culture that would make him a sell to their money guys, and 4) are a job Beard would consider a real step up. I can’t think of many situations like that. He wouldn’t be in play at UNC or KU. Oregon if Altman retires? Can’t see that. Florida if Golden moves up? Maybe, I guess, but I doubt it. If OSU moved on from Diebler? Would he view that as a step up? The 1 job I keep landing on, assuming he keeps himself together, is Arkansas when Cal retires, but that’s probably 3 years out. Really not sure what’s out there for him.

This place would be basically nothing but charred embers if it happened, and it won’t, but they could do far, far worse than Chris Collins. How many Northwestern games have you watched in which you felt like the guy got straight up out-coached? Not sure I’ve ever seen 1.
-
I don’t love the fit for him here, but his record speaks for itself and if he’s the guy would have no problem rooting for him and would be excited to see how it plays out. And since we’re back on the Beard thing, given a choice of Cronin or Beard I would take Cronin 10 times out of 10 because, and if it makes me holier than thou than I guess it does, but not beating women strikes me as a minimum expectation for the job.

Doesn’t change a thing. Was never gonna be May. What happened is what was gonna happen. They missed that window a year ago. He’s just 1 less name in this thread.
-
For sure and it’ll be interesting to see who’s ultimately willing to take that swing. It’s gonna be like the insane deal on a house because of the murder/suicide there. Are you willing to be that guy? Somebody will.
-
Yup. And at some point some higher profile gig than Ole Miss will be willing to take a swing.
-
Dude, the one I’ll never forget is you posting the Clif Marshall hire. I remember thinking who in God’s name is that? I will always be predisposed to buying your information on the strength of that immortal call alone.

Bennett’s obviously top shelf, but it would take me a minute to get there for this reason: Crean took that mess on in ‘08 when Bennett wanted no part of it. I don’t care if it was the rational decision, I’ll always respect Crean for doing it and it’ll always bug me that Bennett wouldn’t.

https://www.thedailyhoosier.com/is-everything-finally-in-place-for-iu-basketball-to-hire-an-elite-coach/ Haven’t read it yet, but I’ve always liked Schumann so I assume it’s worth a read.

https://x.com/BenArnetKOMU/status/1892443911617950079 I don’t know if anyone had seen Dakich’s tweet about Bates from last year, but I hadn’t until this. If he genuinely thought Bates was the problem there last year he didn’t watch them 1 single time. And good on Gates for clapping back on that creep.

49% for the season on almost 7 attempts a game and 95% from the line. Yeah, you might be right about that one. They had Ja’Kobi Gillespie, Malik Dia and a kid who went to UNC whose name I’m spacing there last year. Casey Alexander is gonna have a spectacular recruiting pitch for mid-major types.

Happens to be my birthday for any of you needing gift ideas……

He seems completely unsuited to the 24/7 thing here. But in fairness to the guy, he seems like he probably knows it and I doubt this job would interest him.
-
Yup. People get immersed in X’s & O’s because they’re sexier, but jobs like this are about wiring and temperament.
-
Might be an interesting story to follow from the perspective of gauging how long a program icon can maintain major influence. He was Roy’s guy and he goes to every game clearly as a show of support.
-
Totally respect that. Kelvin Sampson was to me what Pitino is to you and it was a freaking misery having that guy on that bench. But the difference is there is no universe where Pitino gets this job.

Would think it would be tough to fire a guy who won the conference and was COY just last year. And he has a good class coming in. But it still feels like it’s declining. I was reading about his contract at 1 point and he needs to punch his agent in the throat. The school owes his full base salary through I think 27-28, but despite him making almost 4 mil a year, only something like 400k is base salary. So if they fire him his buyout is only about 1.25 mil. That’s insane.

LCS bringing up what other jobs might open up got me thinking about Butler. What’s going on there? Is Matta in trouble? Do they have the resources to compete in a high major? Have they decided they’re overmatched in the Big East and could they take a step down in conference affiliation? Thoughts?
