A thread that will hopefully gain traction as a place for everyone to reflect on the positives from the Tom Crean era. A lot of hard work and commitment went in to bringing us fans out of the dumpster fire and to some really exciting highs. Hope everyone can appreciate what Coach Crean did here! Yeah, I will argue that it's hard to knock someone for not consistently winning the championship. He has them in play (F4,E8) almost every year. There are about 10 or so coaches who would have to turn us down before that became a justified discussion. Only concern about moving on from Crean would be rushing in to another bad hire resulting in another 3-4 years of mediocrity or worse. Maybe, but I'd also argue Kentucky is doing the same thing they've done every year under Cal: young team heating up come March. It's tricky using Kentucky's early season performances to predict their March performance because of how much of a learning curve they tend to go through. Honestly, beyond the fact that I dislike Alford's track record which includes both mild success similar to Crean's and an inexcusable moral blemish, I am convinced he would be given a much longer leash as the hometown hero if he underperformed as coach. Boosters seem hesitant to make a rash discussion firing Crean, and rightfully so, because instability is never good for a program. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to convince enough boosters to move on from Alford if he had success similar to what he has achieved in the past.
