General Coach Candidate News
Woodsonshump replied to JaybobHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Never. Trust. Sources. If that's not apparent at this point, I don't know what to say. People are flinging crap against the wall just to see what sticks. Bottom line is this. Only 2 people know for sure what's going down, and that's Scott Dolson, and the coach he's in negotiations with. Period. This has passed the point of speculation and crossed into utter stupidity. -
Good to see coach looking well.

So many names floating around that I'd be completely happy with (even though my wish is Beard). Matta would be fantastic.

Candidate Thread: Porter Moser

Rick Bozich just put this article out while ago. https://www.wdrb.com/sports/bozich-shift-in-indiana-coaching-chatter-turns-to-thad-matta/article_9287d1a6-8a73-11eb-ba8c-8befa49543d4.html -
Candidate Thread: Porter Moser
Woodsonshump replied to Henryville Hoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Yep. Not hiring a mid-major guy makes about as much sense as not hiring an IU guy. If that’s your criteria, you’ll miss the mark every time. The criteria needs to be can the guy actually coach, does he know his basketball, can he recruit, can he engage the fan base, and can he manage a program. Not whether his school is Power 5 or mid major, and certainly not where he graduated from. -
I would agree with that. This program is not as much of a rebuild as some make it out to be. There’s tons of potential it just needs to be drawn out of the players.

Could we possibly be watching our next HC right now? Moser has LC rolling right now. -
Candidate Thread: Nate Oats (Alabama)

Oh, I'm fairly sure Dolson gauged potential interest, but I'd say beyond that, fans manufactured the remainder of the drama. I'd say there's a really good chance Stevens never was a possibility, that he was asked, but everything else was assumed by message boards. Could well be Stevens never had the slightest intent of coming back to Indiana. In fact, that's my preferred line of thinking. But, if you're in his seat, you always listen and never say never until you have all the details. But that's just my .02 cents worth. -

Well, we've talked a lot about BS and how he's "actually possible", so there's that. Most people thought he was on his way to B-town, so I don't put much stock in what most people say they know or don't know right now. You know, sources and all. Bottom line is until a guy says emphatically no, everybody is still in play, despite what sources say, and despite what anyone "knows". -
Go get the guy who took down Porkchop last night. Criteria #1, always beat Purdue.

Pretty much the same stuff that always gets said every time the coaching carousel fires up. Wouldn’t read anything into it other than just trying to keep his team focused on the tourney and as little distraction as possible. All these coaches do the typical denial thing this time of year. Some mean it, others don’t. We’ll soon see who means what though, won’t we? -

Beard, Oats, or Drew are the three I figure are in the crosshairs. -
That works too. This is awful.

Surely Dolson will take Archie to Chuck E. Cheese to discuss his buyout over pizza and skeeball.

Should this game end in the L column, all Dolson needs to do is just walk to the other end of the court and tell Pikiell he can have a contract with only a minimal change in wardrobe color. -
In other news, IU announces the creation of a new degree program, you can now get a degree in Sports Management Economics with a specialty in contract buyouts.

“Checking boxes” bought us Archie. Maybe we need to go old school and pencil in the circles the next time. -
Is 20+ years of bad hires enough? LOL
-
Hope so!

That’s not the point of what I was trying to say. Sooner or later, people will tire of giving their money frivolously because something didn’t work out. No matter if it’s all up front or whatever. Bad decisions are bad decisions no matter how they’re packaged. At some point, Indiana (and everyone else) will have to suck it up and live with what they bought, whether it’s Miller or someone on down the line. The house of cards will eventually crumble, and athletics as we know it is a house of cards right now whether realized or not. My interest will be in seeing what (if any) business adjustments come out of this pandemic.

Plus, what hasn’t been talked about (or if it has I missed it and thus apologize), is how many times can the university realistically go back to the well (boosters) for the same problem over and over before the boosters basically say “Hey, we’ve bought out every coach pretty much since Knight. Exactly when does this school plan on making intelligent hires and negotiating smart contracts because we’re getting tired of bailing out bad hires and dumb contracts?” I mean, if I were a booster, and while I wouldn’t mind assisting my alma mater in times of real need, I’d like my money too and would prefer to keep it in my pocket, rather than foolishly pay buyouts every time a coach doesn’t work out. This doesn’t necessarily rise to the level of “real”need, and I even want Miller gone myself.

I’m toying with the idea of just walking away from IU. Been a fan all my life since I was old enough to know what IU was. 53 years old and I’m flat out tired of watching this school trying to get “rebuilding” right for the last 20 years. If they can’t get it by now, chances are they’re not gonna get it right. Grows real old the longer this goat roping goes on. Miller hasn’t convinced me that he knows how to manage a team. Glass hasn’t convinced me that he knows the right type of coach to plug in here. Told my wife that tonight I felt like I was watching the varsity coach school the JV coach. Frankly, the Langford experiment shouldn’t have ever been. I’ll leave it at that. Too many rose colored glasses couldn’t see the reality sitting before them. They couldn’t look at high school and see the blatant disparity that was smacking anybody who watches and knows basketball right in the face. Langford was what he was because he went against severely inferior talent night after night, and his coach made sure he got his requisite points night after night. While there may be athleticism, you see the glaring gap after the B1G carved him up game after game. I’d rather see Miller go after the best in the state that intend on staying 4 years. I will go to my grave thinking that the real problem with this team wasn’t related to injuries, but to chemistry, and BAD chemistry at that. No more 1 and dones, it just isn’t worth it. Build a stable program and forget bringing in the lone rangers that demand all the attention and can’t mesh with anybody. OK. I guess I’m done now. Give me baseball season.
