BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana Women's Soccer (4-1-2) opens up Big Ten action this week as the Hoosiers play host to Michigan (4-3-0) and Michigan State (5-1-1). Thursday's Big Ten opener will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network at 6 p.m. Lisa Byington and Glenn Crooks will be on the call for BTN. Sunday's game against the Spartans will be streamed on BTN Plus. Admission to all Indiana Women's Soccer home games is free of charge. THIS WEEK'S PROMOS • Thursday's game against Michigan is dubbed "Thursday Night Futbol" as IUWS celebrates International Night. IU features six players from countries outside the United States - Austrian Annelie Leitner, Hungarian Hanna Nemeth and Canadians Chandra Davidson, Meghan Scott, Melanie Forbes and Caitlin Arbuckle. In addition, at halftime there will be a special recognition for Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night where the Hoosiers will recognize members nominated by the team. • Sunday's game will be Pride Day and Indiana Pride bracelets will be given out to the first 250 fans. SCOUTING MICHIGAN • Under first year head coach Jennifer Klein, Michigan is off a 4-3-0 start. Most recently, the Wolverines defeated Central Michigan last Friday, 6-1. Michigan's offense is averaging 2.29 goals per game and has been led by six goals from Nicki Hernandez, who has added four assists for 16 total points, leading the Big Ten. Sarah Stratigakis has added four goals, while Reilly Martin has three. In goal, Izzy Nino has a 2.03 goals against average with 12 saves. • Michigan leads the all-time series with IU, 17-4-3. Last season, Chandra Davidson netted a goal but ultimately the Wolverines came away with a 2-1 win in Ann Arbor. SCOUTING MICHIGAN STATE • The Spartans suffered their first loss of the season on Sunday, falling to No. 23 Colorado. However, Michigan State has nearly matched its six-win total from last season with a 5-1-1 mark. Sadie Misiewicz and Camryn Evans each have four goals, combining for 8 of 12 Spartans goals this season. The MSU defense has been impressive, earning five shutouts this season. Reilly Ott has a 0.55 goals against average with 33 saves. The Spartans will travel to Purdue Thursday before heading to Bloomington. Head coach Tom Saxton is in his 28th season at the helm of the program. • Indiana leads the all-time series against Michigan State, 16-7-2. Last season, Davidson netted the gamewinner for the Hoosiers in the 18th minute as IU defeated MSU in East Lansing, 1-0. LAST TIME OUT • The Hoosiers closed out non-conference action over the weekend, defeating Kentucky, 5-1, before drawing with Kansas State, 0-0. • Indiana saw five different Hoosiers find the back of the net against Kentucky on Friday. The five goals was the most in an IU game since the 2013 season. • Sunday marked the first time this season the Hoosiers have been shut out and broke Indiana's streak of multi-goal games. At seven games, it is the latest in a season IU has been shut out for the first time since 2011. HOOSIER NOTES • Thursday will mark the first Big Ten opener to be played at home for the Hoosiers since 2015. • For the season, nine Hoosiers have scored at least one goal and 14 have registered at least one point. • Abby Allen is leading the Hoosiers in scoring this season with five goals. She is second in the conference in goals and points (14). In addition, she is tied for first in shots (27). Nationally, her 2.00 points per game average is tied for 16th. • Leitner is close behind Allen with four goals on the season and she saw her three-game scoring streak broken against Kansas State. Three of Leitner's goal have been gamewinners, most in the Big Ten and tied for fifth most in the country. Leitner earned Big Ten Offensive on Sept. 4 after scoring a pair of gamewinners for the Hoosiers against Pepperdine and LMU. It was the first conference offensive weekly award since 2013. • Indiana's offense has been hot to start the year, totaling 16 goals, the most through the first seven games of the season since the 2013 campaign. • On the other end, sophomore goalkeeper Bethany Kopel has been impressive between the pipes as she leads the Big Ten with 37 saves. • Eight Hoosiers have seen their first career games in an Indiana uniform this season - graduate transfer Claudia Day, sophomores Maddie West, Nicolette Kapsalis, Camryn Carty and Ana Garibaldi and freshmen Maddie Essick, Madeline Carlson and Caitlin Arbuckle.
