Box Score BOISE, Idaho – Indiana softball head coach Michelle Gardner picked up her 300th career win this afternoon after the Hoosiers defeated Valparaiso 3-1 in their final game of the SpringHill Suites Invitational in Boise, Idaho. Coach Gardner is now 300-345-1 (.464) in her coaching career with a 113-169-1 (.399) at the helm in Indiana. IU finished the weekend 3-2 to improve to 5-16-1 on the year. Indiana connected on nine hits against the Crusaders, with seven different Hoosiers tallying hits in the contest. Brianna Meyer lead the way at the plate going 2-for-4 with an RBI-single and a run scored. Michelle Huber and Kassi Farmer also drove in runs for Indiana this afternoon. Breanna Saucedo singled to extend her reached base streak to eight consecutive games. Brooke Boetjer started the first 3.2 innings and allowed just one earned run on three hits while striking out three. Lora Olson (2-7) finished the game to become pitcher of record, tossing 3.1 shutout innings with just two Valpo hits and a pair of strikeouts. The Hoosiers opened the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Breanna Saucedo reached on a fielding error and made her way to third on a single by Meyer. A one-out walk loaded the bases for Farmer who came through with an RBI-base hit to right to put her team ahead 1-0. Huber followed with another single to left. The hit drove in Meyer and gave Indiana a two run lead over Valpo. Saucedo started the second inning with her first single of the game and advanced to second on her eighth stolen base of the season. Meyer would bring her around to score on a single up the middle, putting IU on top 3-0. Valpo added a run in the fourth, sending Olson in to take over in the circle. The junior would shutout the Crusaders the rest of the way to help the Hoosiers to their third straight win. http://www.iuhoosiers.com/sports/w-softbl/recaps/030914aad.html Congrats to Coach Gardner for getting her 300th career win.

BOISE, Idaho – The Indiana softball team defeated Weber State in a 5-1 decision this afternoon and held a 3-0 lead over Boise State in the nightcap, but darkness set in and forced the game to be suspended in the top of the fifth inning. That contest will be resumed and completed tomorrow at Noon ET. INDIANA 5, WEBER STATE 1 The Hoosiers took advantage of Wilcat errors to help themselves to a 5-1 win over Weber State in Indiana’s first game of the day at the SpringHill Suites Invitational in Boise, Idaho. The Hoosiers tallied just two hits in the game, a solo shot by Michelle Huber and a triple by Jenna Abraham, but that was all the offense they would need as two key errors in the top of the sixth plated four IU runs. Lora Olson (1-7) was solid through 7.0 innings in the circle. She struck out six WSU batters and surrendered just one earned run on five hits. Both teams remained scoreless until the Wildcats pushed a run across in the top of the fourth on an RBI-double to centerfield. Huber used one swing of the bat to erase the Hoosiers’ one-run deficit in the bottom of the fifth. The sophomore drove a pitch over the scoreboard in left field to tie the ballgame at 1-1. Abraham opened the sixth with a triple to right before Lalich reached on a walk to give IU runners on the corners. Kassi Farmer laid down a bunt and reached safely as Weber State’s MaCauley Flint checked the runner back to third and made no attempt to get Farmer at first. With bases loaded and two outs, Shelby Gogreve put the ball in play to WSU’s Brooke Ford. Ford’s throw to get Gogreve was off the mark, allowing two runs to score and give Indiana a 3-1 lead and leave runners on first and third. Erin Lehman sent another ground ball into play, and another Weber State error resulted in a pair of runs for the Hoosiers. Olson would shutout the Wildcats in the top of the seventh, ending the game with her sixth strikeout of the contest to capture her first win of the season. INDIANA 3, BOISE STATE 0 (Suspended in top of the fifth) With no lights at Dona Larsen Park and darkness setting in, the umpire decided to suspend the game in the top of the fifth inning where Indiana held a 3-0 lead over Boise State. Both teams will resume play tomorrow at Noon. The Hoosiers three runs all occurred in the top of the fourth inning. Jenna Abraham walked to start the frame and advanced to second on Natalie Lalich’s second single of the contest. With runners on first and second, Farmer drove an outside pitch out to the fence in right to drive in Abraham from second and put runners on second and third. Michelle Huber followed with a double down the left field line to clear the bases and give IU a 3-0 lead over the Broncos. Boise State threatened to strike in the bottom half of the fifth after pushing a runner over to third, but the Hoosiers would get out of the inning and head into the top of the fifth. Brianna Meyer connected on a one-out single to center field in the top of the fifth; however conditions were considered to dark to continue play and the game was suspended. After continuing that game tomorrow afternoon, Indiana will then close the weekend with Valparaiso immediately following the concluding of the Indiana/Boise State game. http://www.iuhoosiers.com/sports/w-softbl/recaps/030814aab.html

http://www.nba.com/video/games/bobcats/2014/03/07/0021300918-cle-cha-play4.nba Last night got a little personal in the Zeller family.
-
Cody Zeller was a program-changing recruit for Indiana. In his two seasons in Bloomington, the All-American forward led the Hoosiers to 56 wins and an outright Big Ten championship before entering the 2013 NBA Draft, where he was the No. 4 overall pick by the Charlotte Bobcats. Inside the Hall had the opportunity recently to talk at length with Zeller on Tuesday about his rookie season and about his time at Indiana. In part two of a two-part series that has appeared this week on the site, Zeller reflects on his rookie season with the Bobcats (click here to read part one of our Q & A with Zeller): Inside the Hall: You’re almost three-quarters of the way done with your rookie season right now. How has the adjustment been? Cody Zeller: It’s a tough process going from college to the NBA. The game is so much different, both on and off the court it’s a big adjustment but I feel like I’ve made the adjustment pretty well. It’s definitely been a fun year for me. ITH: What’s the adjustment like to the NBA? What’s so different about it? CZ: I think there’s so much that’s different really both on and off the court. On the court, you’re playing against grown men every night. The style of play is a lot different than college. I think the biggest difference is just that night in and night out you’re playing against the best players in the world. And you know, in college, maybe you have a few good games each year, a couple tough matchups but in this league it’s the best players in the world every night. There’s no easy games. There’s no non-conference games, none of that. We just played San Antonio, Oklahoma City, Miami and we’ve got the Pacers tomorrow (Editor’s note: Zeller scored 11 points in a 109-87 win over the Pacers on Wednesday). So it’s kind of just how this league goes. There’s no time to catch your breath or get a rhythm. That’s the biggest difference. ITH: What’s the best aspect of being a professional basketball player, would you say? CZ: Oh man, there’s so much that comes with it. I don’t know if I could pick one thing. I mean, it’s tough off the court as well, moving to a new city, being 21 years old and not knowing anyone. Obviously you travel a lot, you’re gone a lot so it’s tough to build relationships with the right people, so that’s definitely been a big adjustment for me as well. But anytime I have a bad game or things aren’t going well, I remind myself that I’m basketball for a living and playing in the NBA, which is something I’ve always dreamed of. So it’s tough to have a bad day when you think about it like that. ITH: So would it be fair to say that the goods outweigh the bad for you? CZ: Yeah, definitely. 100 percent. I’ve always dreamed of getting to play like this. It’s been nothing but fun for me, especially going around early in the season to all these arenas for the first time and playing against these teams for the first time. A lot of these guys I grew up watching, and it’s been nothing but a fun year for me. I’m living the dream. ITH: Over your past five games, you’ve scored at least 10 points four times. You only did that four times in your prior 55 games. Are you feeling a lot more comfortable now? How do you feel your game is progressing? CZ: Yeah, I mean, I’m just trying to bring energy to the court on offense and defense. Just trying to be an energy guy and get offensive rebounds and play good defense. It’s fun being a role player for a change, just to be an energy guy and come in and try to make an impact from that way instead of being the mean scorer like I’ve been in college and high school. ITH: How often does Bobcats owner Michael Jordan interact with the team, and what kind of stuff do you pick up from being around him? CZ: He’s around every once in a while, he’s probably been to four or five games. He’s great as far as he acts like a lot of players still so he’ll be in the locker room or the training room and interacting with all of us. He’s obviously the best player of all-time, so any little thing you can pick up from him or advice you can get from him is obviously very valuable. http://www.insidethehall.com/2014/03/07/q-a-cody-zeller-talks-rookie-season-in-nba/

BOISE, Idaho – The Indiana softball team opened up the SpringHill Suites Invitational with a pair of losses to Weber State and Boise State this afternoon, dropping the Hoosiers record to 2-16-1 on the season. Indiana opened the day with a 5-3 loss to Weber State before falling in the bottom of the seventh to host Boise State, 3-2. WEBER STATE 5, INDIANA 3 The Hoosiers fell 5-3 to Weber State in their first of two games this afternoon. Indiana outhit the Wildcats 8-7 with Breanna Saucedo and Brianna Meyer registering two hits apiece. Saucedo was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Meyer doubled and singled while drawing a walk. Michelle Huber also doubled in a 1-for-3 effort at the plate, and Jenna Abraham and Kassi Farmer connected on RBI singles for the Hoosiers. Meaghan Murphy got the start and pitched 6.0 innings against Weber State. She struck out seven while allowing five runs on seven hits while walking a pair of batters. The Hoosiers struck first in the contest in the second inning of play. Huber led off the frame with a double to right and advanced on a ground ball out to second. With two away, Saucedo connected on a shallow ball to center field that gave Indiana a 1-0 lead, as Huber crossed home plate uncontested. Weber State knotted the game at one on back-to-back hits and added a pair of runs with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead over Indiana. IU responded with two runs in the top of the fifth on back-to-back RBI singles from Abraham and Farmer; however another two-run shot by Weber State gave the Wildcats a 5-3 lead. That score would remain final as neither team scored throughout the remainder of the contest. BOISE STATE 3, INDIANA 2 The Hoosiers held the lead through the first five innings, but the Broncos plated an unearned run to tie the game in the sixth and eventually drove in the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Indiana 3-2. Lora Olson did well in the circle despite the loss. The junior hurled 6.0 innings with four strikeouts and allowed just one earned run as the other two BSU runs occurred on IU miscues. Offensively, Indiana tallied just three hits with a double by Saucedo and singles from Meyer and Olson. The Hoosiers jumped on the board first in the top of the second inning. Kassi Farmer reached after getting hit by a pitch and slid in safely before the throw to second that gave IU runners at first and second. Olson laid down a sacrifice bunt, bringing Shelby Gogreve to the plate. The senior laid down a perfectly executed squeeze bunt to score Farmer and give Indiana a 1-0 lead. A sacrifice fly ball by Jenna Abraham sent Saucedo across the plate and doubled Indiana’s lead at 2-0, but Boise State responded in the bottom half of the inning after a throwing error ultimately led cut the Hoosiers’ lead to one. Another Indiana error tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, sending it into the bottom of the seventh in a 2-2 tie. The Broncos lead off the inning with a single and a bunt that eventually placed runners on second and third. A ground ball sent to the left side forced Gogreve to dive and make a play. She tried to get the throw home from her knees, but the runner slid in under the tag to give Boise State the win. Indiana will again see both Weber State and Boise State tomorrow in their second day at the SpringHill Suites Invitational. http://www.iuhoosiers.com/sports/w-softbl/recaps/030714aaa.html

FIRST PITCH The Hoosiers trek to Boise, Idaho to participate in the Spring Hill Suites Invitational hosted by Boise State. Indiana will play five games this weekend including contests against Weber State, Valparaiso and Boise State. A LOOK WEBER STATE Indiana will face Weber State for the first time in program history this weekend. The Wildcats are 9-5 on the year most recently going 3-1 at the Eller Media Stadium Classic hosted by UNLV Weber State is hitting .266 on the season with five players hitting above .300 through 14 games. The Wildcats pitching staff has held opponents to a .254 average and have allowed 47 earned runs through 93.0 innings for a team ERA of 3.54. SCOUTING THE BRONCOS Host team Boise State will face Indiana for just the second time in program history. Both squads met previously in the 2010 season where Indiana topped the Broncos, 7-3. Boise State enters this weekend 7-10 on the year. The Broncos are hitting .263 as a team. On the basepaths, Boise State has successfully swiped 45 bases compared to opposing teams’ 18 in 20 attempts. Boise State pitchers have thrown 101.0 innings, maintaining a 4.50 ERA with 51 strikeouts. MEETING WITH VALPO Indiana and Valparaiso meet for the second consecutive weekend, as the Hoosiers game at the Wildcat Invite was cut short due to rain in Tucson. Since that game is technically not official, the all-time still sits with a 6-0 Indiana advantage. Valpo is now 3-10 on the year after going 1-3 at the Wildcat Invitational last weekend. The Crusaders are hitting at a .254 clip with three players hitting over the .300 mark. Valpo’s pitching staff owns a 4.44 ERA in 80.1 innings of work. GET ON BASE CaraMia Tsirigos had a great start to her freshman campaign at Indiana. The Atlanta, Ga. native reached reached base in nine straight games to start the season. In that nine-game span, Tsirigos hit safely in five contests and drew a walk in six different games. GOING STREAKING After missing nearly all of the 2013 season due to injury, redshirt senior Breanna Saucedo has quickly made an impact in the Hoosiers’ lineup in her return this spring. Saucedo strung together a seven game hit-streak from Feb. 8 through Feb. 21 and has registered a hit in 12 of her 16 games played. At the Wilcat Invitational, Saucedo hit .500 (5-for-10) with atleast one hit in each of the Hoosiers’ three games and scored four runs. LALICH LIGHTS IT UP Natalie Lalich has been a bright spot in the Hoosiers lineup through her last four starts. The redshirt freshman has hit .538 through that span (7-for-13) including several career-best performances. The Greenwood, Ind. native tallied a career-high four hits against Troy on Feb. 23 where she drove in a run and scored twice. Lalich then went on to drive in six of the Hoosiers’ eight runs in IU’s win over UT-Arlington on Feb. 28, setting a career-high and making her just one of three IU softball players to drive in six-or-more RBI in a game in program history. Four of those runs resulted from Lalich’s first career homerun, a grand slam to right-center, helping her become one of three active players on the IU roster with a grandslam in their respective careers. Through the last four contests, Lalich has earned a notable .571 on-base percentage along with a .923 slugging percentage. LOAD ‘EM UP A trio of Hoosier hitters have found success with bases loaded this season. Michelle Huber and Kayla Mathewson, and Natalie Lalich have been perfect at the plate with runners on every base. As a team, the Hoosiers have hit .333 on the year with bases loaded. LET’S COMPARE The Indiana pitching staff has given up fewer walks per game that its opponents this spring, issuing just 2.36 free passes per contest compared to opposing teams’ 3.12 walks/game. IU hurlers have also posted an average of 5.78 strikeouts per game while opponents have averaged 4.86. http://www.iuhoosiers.com/sports/w-softbl/spec-rel/030614aaa.html IU softball team is out west for the weekend let's see what they can do they need to make that record better.

I completely agree not this season but maybe another time.

Inside the Hall had the opportunity recently to talk at length with Zeller about his rookie season and about his time at Indiana. In part one of a two-part series that will appear this week on the site, Zeller reflects back on his collegiate career as a Hoosier: Inside the Hall: Going back to your time at IU, what would you say was your favorite memory from your time as a Hoosier both on and off the court? Cody Zeller: Wow, that’s a tough one. I can’t think of one. I definitely miss playing in Assembly Hall in front of the Hoosier fans. It was always so loud every game. It’s so easy to play hard just because you’ve got so much adrenaline and you kind of feed off the crowd. So I definitely miss playing at Assembly Hall. The campus was always fun off the court. There was always something to do and a lot of people hang out with. There was always something going on so I do miss the college campus a lot. ITH: How much do you keep in touch with your former IU teammates these days? CZ: Quite a bit. I didn’t get to know the younger guys as well, but I still talk to Austin (Etherington), Will (Sheehey) and Jeff (Howard) and those guys and all the guys from last year as far as Vic (Oladipo), Christian (Watford), Jordy (Hulls), Derek (Elston), all those guys. We keep in pretty good touch. I think it’s tough for all of us, the first year out of college. Obviously I’m not playing overseas like Jordy and Derek and Christian, so I think it’s even tougher on them. I think we’re good for each other because we’re kind of going through similar situations with being away from Bloomington and playing our first year professional. We definitely stay in touch, all of us. ITH: It’s got to be a good thing too for all of you to have that support system with each other … CZ: Yeah, definitely. Like I said, a lot of us are in similar situations so there’s not too many people you can go to that are in similar situations. You can obviously look to friends and family, but they’re not the ones playing every night. They’re in the same situation, so it’s good to be able to talk to those guys. ITH: How close are you following this year’s team? What are your thoughts on them? CZ: I’ve been able to watch a fairly decent amount of the games. Obviously they’re playing better recently and it’s tough for them with how many guys we lost from last year. It’s always tough, but I think they’ve been doing alright, especially lately. ITH: What do you think this team does especially well that maybe last year’s team didn’t do as well? Or what differences do you see in this year’s team and last year’s team? CZ: I don’t know. I’m not around it every day to see the big differences. I feel like I’m a fan now instead of in it every day like I was. So it’s tough to compare. But I think they’ve got a lot of young guys so I think they’re starting to figure out what wins. Just the details and the small things that make the big difference the younger guys are starting to realize that now later in the season. ITH: I know a few days ago you tweeted about how happy you were for Will after his 30 point game against Iowa. Can you talk about why he was such a good teammate? CZ: Will was unbelievable. He was one of my favorite teammates there to play with through high school, college or the NBA just because he’s got an edge about him. He’ll run through a wall for the team, he’ll do anything for the team. Opposing players hate him, but he’s one of those guys who you love to have on your team but other teams hate to play against him just because he plays so hard. He’s willing to put his body through anything for the team whether it’s diving for a loose ball or defending the best player on the other team or playing the four or five spot. He’ll do whatever the team needs to get a win and he’s always a lot of fun to play with. ITH: Tomorrow is senior night and I know you weren’t able to go through it because you had the opportunity to go the NBA, but how would you have approached the senior speech? CZ: Oh, man. I don’t know, but I wish I did have the chance just because there were so many great people that helped me and I do have a lot of people to thank just because of how great my two years there were and how much Indiana means to me. Obviously, I’ve thanked them in a text or call, but it’s different than doing it in front of 17,000 people and being able to recognize those people for the impact they’ve made on my life and my basketball career. ITH: Have you been back to Bloomington since you’ve left and what’s it like coming back as a former student? CZ: I was back for the (NBA) All-Star break, but it was only for a couple of days and I didn’t do hardly anything. I just saw some family and a couple of friends and caught up with some teammates and stuff. I didn’t do much, but it’s definitely fun being back in Bloomington and at the same time, it was just a quick weekend so it was kind of a tease being there for only a little while. Part two of our Q & A with Zeller, which focuses on life in the NBA and his rookie season so far, will be published later this week. http://www.insidethehall.com/2014/03/04/q-cody-zeller-reflects-iu-career-talks-2013-2014-hoosiers/

TUCSON, Ariz. – Rainy weather in Tucson resulted in a number of delays and postponed the conclusion of the Hoosiers’ contest with Valparaiso this afternoon in the top of the fifth inning. Indiana did manage to complete its opening game of the day in a 7-2 loss to Longwood before rain washed out the conclusion of their second contest of the day. Indiana and Valpo will resume the remainder of that contest in Boise next weekend as both teams will be in Idaho playing in the Spring Hill Suites Invitational. That game will continue play with an Indiana 5-0 lead in the top of the fifth with a runner on third and two outs. Start time to resume that contest has not yet been determined. LONGWOOD 7, INDIANA 2 Indiana tallied five hits in their loss to Longwood, with Brianna Meyer going 2-for-2 to lead the Hoosiers at the plate. Breanna Saucedo also singled and scored a run, while Natalie Lalich drove in an RBI on a 1-for-3 game and Kassi Farmer added a hit for Indiana. Longwood connected on 12 hits; however, a majority was assisted by the swirling winds in the outfield. Changing wind speeds and direction shifts created problems for both teams in the outfield as it caught the defense off balance in a number of situations. Meaghan Murphy (0-6) suffers the loss after surrendering five runs on six hits in 1.2 innings of work. Brooke Boetjer finished the final 4.1 innings where she allowed two earned runs on six hits while striking out a pair of Lancer hitters. Longwood took the lead in the first inning using three hits to drive in a run and take a 1-0 lead. The Lancers drove in four in the following frame to pull ahead 5-0, prompting a change in the circle for Indiana. Boetjer held the Lancers scoreless until the fourth inning where Longwood used a sacrifice fly and an RBI double to increase its lead to 7-0. The Hoosiers responded in the sixth with a pair of runs to cut the deficit to five. Saucedo and Meyer singled to start the frame setting up an RBI-single from Lalich. Meyer would eventually score on a sac fly from CaraMia Tsirigos, but that would be as close as Indiana would get, falling in an eventual 7-2 final. INDIANA 5, VALPO 0 (Suspended in the top of the fifth) The Hoosiers and Crusaders will have to wait until next weekend to complete their game as it was suspended due to rain. The game will resume in the top of the fifth with Jenna Abraham on third, Boetjer at the plate with two away and a 5-0 IU lead. The Hoosiers scored all five of those runs in the top of the second inning that was temporarily interrupted in one of three rain delays throughout the game. Back-to-back walks to Kelsey Dotson and Abraham preceded an RBI-single from Shelby Gogreve, putting Indiana ahead, 1-0. After a rain delay, play resumed with an Erin Lehman RBI-single to left that gave the Hoosiers a two run advantage. After a one-out walk loaded the bases, Meyer followed suit with a free pass to send in Indiana’s third run of the ballgame. With bases still loaded, Lalich put Indiana up 5-0 on a two-run double to dead center field. After two scoreless innings, Abraham connected on a two-out triple to give IU a runner in the top of the fifth. It would be during Boetjer’s at bat that the game would be called, suspending play with a 5-0 score. Indiana is scheduled to play Arizona tomorrow at 3 p.m. ET, however that could change pending on the weather.
