They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
AH1971 replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Will be interesting to watch how Auburn plays out the rest of this year. If there's serious smoke around Pearl leaving Auburn and it's currently being discussed, his current players will know about it before anyone else, regardless if it isn't relayed directly from the horses mouth. Auburn has the parts to win it all this year, college basketball as a whole is down. A slip in play could potentially be a tell tale sign. -

That's how I interpret it as well. And not just any coach though, but a steady and proven coach. I think Buckner can man up and admit he made a mistake if we're replacing Woodson with someone like Bruce Pearl. -

I don't get the sense that Buckner is opposed to moving on from Woodson. I think he is vehemently opposed to moving on from Woodson after one bad year without any kind of contingency plan in place. Firing Woodson is one thing, but it's still only half the battle. I think the last thing in the world Buckner wants is to shell out a bunch of money to make Woodson go away while not having any kind of plan in place and the new coaching search ends in a national media charade where the job is publicly turned down multiple times and IU is stuck with a tier 3 or 4 candidate. -

I believe Cuban takes care of the big time donations and steers the rest of the Jimmies and Joes (every other donor not named Cook or Simon-Skjodt) to donate towards athletics or other small project endeavors. -

You've said the same thing literally 50 times in the same thread. Give it a rest why don't ya? -

Dusty isn't my #1 or even #2 choice, but I would take him over Woodson at this point. I struggle seeing the admin move on from Woodson this early just to hire Dusty May. Personally, I think it's Pearl or bust and if not Woodson gets another year. If Dusty goes on another deep run this March you could probably convince me that he deserves the job after the 24-25 season. -

Wouldn't you feel better about hiring Dusty May after seeing him coach and recruit in major college basketball first? If he takes the Miami job and flames out in 4 years aren't you going to be happy it was down there and not up here? If IU is Dusty May's "dream job" he'll take it whenever it's offered. Why not get as much experience as possible beforehand? -

Understanding the kind of person Pearl is, I don't think he'd wish the Indiana job for a first time head coach on even his worst enemies, let alone his son. I think taking the Indiana job is in large part to pave the way for his son taking over at Auburn. -

Sorry missed the stop Fife talk before I responded, hadn't read through the warning. I am done as well. -

So no? You just looked at his stats? Fife was never asked nor needed to be a scorer. Played with Guyton and Recker as an underclassmen and with Haston and Jeffries as an upperclassmen. The one year he was asked to shoot more he hit a very high clip, all while being named the B10 DPOY. -

He was a tremendous leader, a great defender, accepted his role, and played hard every game. We'd be in a lot better position today if we had more Dane Fife's on our team. -

Are you old enough to have seen/remember Dane Fife play? -
I'd take Greg McDermott as a 3rd or 4th option. I think Randy Bennett is perfectly content in the Bay Area and I may be in the minority, but I believe the game of basketball has simply passed by Tony Bennett. If I wanted to watch a team with a poor, antiquated offense who doesn't defend the 3 point line I'd simply revert to watching Mike Woodson.

Hopefully that means they are working behind the scenes to lock someone up like Bruce Pearl. I do agree with others that Quinn isn't signing off on anything unless they have a plan in place and a guy ready to go. I still think there is an opportunity down the road to hire Dusty May so long as his upward trajectory continues. I think coaching at a school like Miami or Florida St would do his career wonders...and it's entirely possible that one or both of those jobs may be open here in the next month. -

From WI but was the head coach at a high school in metro Detroit when he was hired as an assistant at Buffalo by Bobby Hurley. Of the few Michigan fans I know that actually care about basketball, Oats is seen as the preferred replacement of Juwan Howard when the time comes. I personally don't see Oats style helping him in recruiting if he were to coach in the B10. -
Open and if it goes in* If you shoot 35% as a team from 3, you have to shoot at least 53% from the mid-range to make it a more efficient shot. Very few people in the world shot 53% from the mid-range whether they're open or not, let alone an entire team. That's literally why teams are willing to give up that shot possession after possession....it's not a high probability shot regardless if it goes in or not.
-
Alabama and Purdue are #1 and #2 in offensive efficiency and are two of the most analytical teams in the country.
-
I have no clue what you’re talking about or how that pertains to analytics? Analytics is nothing more than data. It’s a mathematical fact that a 3 point shot is a more efficient shot (over an entire setting) than a 15 foot jump shot. You’re literally arguing against data and math.
-
Let me add, a 15 foot jump shot isn’t BAD (or at least in the context Scott is suggesting) in a one off setting. But over the course of a season, you’d have to shot at an unreasonable percentage to justify a mid- range shot over a 3 point at even a reasonable clip.
-
Oh brother lol. That’s literally not at all what they say. Analytics say that that a 15 ft jump shot is way less efficient than a shot at the rim considering they’re both worth the same amount of points or a shot 5 feet further worth an additional point. And that would be unequivocally true. In order for a 15 foot jump shot to be a primary staple of your offense, you’d need a player(s) who could consistently shoot ~60% from that distance. Considering the best players in the world only shoot at about a 50% clip from that distance, a 3 point shot made only 35% of the time is still a better shot. There’s a lot more 35% 3 pt shooters in this world than 60% jump shooters. Analytics have nothing to do with “computer nerds who have never played a sport”. It’s simple probability and literal data computed and incorporated to differing sports across the globe.

Steven Pearl hasn’t even been named coach in-waiting at Auburn. No chance Pearl takes the IU job under the hypothetical assumption his son gets the job when he calls it quits. 1) I don’t think Pearl in a million years would want his son’s first HC gig to be at Indiana 2) Pearl worked his way up the hierarchy ladder to get to where he is today; I’m sure he’s had the same conversations with his son who is only 36 Where are people getting this idea that hiring Bruce Pearl comes with the condition of promoting his son once he retires? -
Just say you don’t understand how advance metrics work.
