Transfer Portal w/IU Interest
Silat Player replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Did you see IU's backcourt last year? It was one of the worst in division 1. If Rice comes to IU, and a big IF, he starts next year. I think out of those 4, the three locks in that list are MM, MR, and Rice. I do think that Tucker was probably given some kind of, "Kid, you are great, no way you aren't good enough to start next year" kind of speech to get him to come to IU though. -

Yeah, this is the big challenge of having so many spots to fill right now. How in the world do you convince 7 players to come and play for IU for next year with probably 6 from the portal? Most of the portal kids are looking for BOTH money and playing time. With IU recruiting so many players at the same time, I have no idea how they'll be able to promise playing time to so many players. And if you don't think that coaches promise playing time to players from the portal, I have a bridge to sell you. That's one of the reasons why the portal is best for filling a hole or two in the your roster. -
They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread

Agree, but my worry is that Woody is going to play all of the players who aren't shooters together. I mean, he DOES seem to have a history of valuing players who are not great shooters, so... I could just see him actually move MM to the four (if he actually doesn't try to go to the NBA), which would be great, and then move that Frosh to the three, keep TG at the 2 and Perkins at the point. I know...I know... making a TON of assumptions here, but bear with me. That would STILL create a lineup that's short on shooting. Based on reviews of the freshman and what I've seen of Perkins, it would be VERY short of shooters. Until I see at least 2 very good shooters sign with IU, I'm going to be very leary of anybody that Woody signs. And then, I'll believe that he's going to actually play the shooters and get them shots when I see it. -

Ok, but I'm going to keep saying this almost as much as people in this thread say, "Fire Mike Woodson!" WE NEED SHOOTERS. WHERE ARE THE SHOOTERS? I like Perkins. He plays hard and is a good Athlete, but he's just a so-so, kind of streaky shooter. As they have for years now, IU needs some shooters. -

Yep. Tucker and Perkins don't fix IU's shooting woes. -

Agreed. I like Perkins, but not in the same lineup with TG. Perkins and Gallo together give you more of the same problems that you had this year. Not nearly enough shooting... -

Of course Woody is cookin'. After all, Coach has SEVEN schollys to fill and it's almost APRIL. He'd better be cookin'... -

This is no different than the sunshine pumpers who got positively giddy during the meaningless end of season winning streak. No, winning a few games against bad teams after the team had been eliminated from NCAA tournament contention did not mean that Mike Woodsen was a good coach. LOL -

This will be the best thing said in this thread today. I'm sure of it and it's only 10:30 in the morning, Eastern Time. LOL If Leal plays 20 minutes a game next year, IU isn't sniffing the tournament. The reason that IU was better at the end of the season was three-fold. 1.) KW was playing out of his mind. 2.) MM had finally figured out how to play at the college level. 3.) IU's opponents weren't very good. And the one "good" opponent was massively inconsistent. If LCS thinks any "success" that IU experienced last year was predicated on Leal getting 20+ minutes in any game, I don't know what to tell you. I'd love to have the opportunity to sell LCS some amazing, life-changing products, though...LOL -

I don't care about defense anymore. I want to outscore teams next year 120 - 115 every game. Give me the old Dan Issel, Kiki Vandeweghe, Alex English type of IU team next year. We'll load up on scorers from the portal and just outshoot them and out-tempo them next year. A complete opposite team...LOL -

If he gives up open threes and straight line drives to the basket too, then he's the perfect IU player. Sign him up. LOL -

Ah, but what are these "wildest expectations?" That's the fly in the ointment. And who determines what these nebulous expectations are? I would assume that Woody's pal Buckner has much less lofty expectations than you or I might have... -

What a great day for IU Basketball. We have a young-ish alum that gets the Michigan basketball coaching job. Purdue is absolutely pummeling their opponent in the round of 32 in the NCAA tournament on their way to the Sweet 16. And IU still has a 66 year old coach with zero recruits for next year, half of an empty roster and and a team that is sitting at home on the opening round of the NCAA tournament. Wonderful.... -

Yep. The fans are an easy patsy. Blame the one group with absolutely zero actual power. I mean, as much as I hate schools like UNC or Kentucky, it's obvious why they tend not to have the kind of sustained failure like IU. They identify situations that are not working and move on quickly. Look at UNC, for instance. Matt Doherty - a beloved alum. Out after 2 years a coach, it wasn't working and they weren't going to tank the program for an alum. So they went out and aggresively got the best coach they could. What a refreshing view... -

Is Branch McCracken still available? I would suggest that digging him up and propping him up on a folding chair right now might make give IU a more vigorous and effective coach than CMW at this point. The fact that Woody was an effective player for IU 40+ years ago is completely irrelevant. He's an ineffective, completely inexperienced (for college), geriatric, seemingly lazy and egocentric college coach. -

Agreed. I mean, the fact of the matter is that IU's major sports programs (football and basketball) have been a mess for DECADES. That indicates a systemic problem within the administration of IU as an instititution. It goes far deeper than a single coach or two. Miller and Woodson are simply symptoms of the larger problem... There's no secret there. -
Yep. Best comment of the day. It's impossible to have any faith in this program at the current time. At all. Just waiting for the 3 bigs that they're going to sign...

I don't think HE is lumping Dolsen and Woodson together. I think it's fair for EVERYONE to lump Woodson and Dolsen together. Dolsen's two major hires are Cig and Woodsen. Cig hasn't coached a single game yet, so no real track record there yet, and Woodsen has been a disaster. LOL
