Mike Woodson to be next IUBB coach. Thad Matta to be associate AD
IU Prof replied to iubb's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
This is where I'm at. Woodson clearly knows the game and how to win from an Xs and Os standpoint. The question is just whether he can parlay his NBA connections to recruit at a sufficient level to win here. If he can come in recruiting at even 80% of the level Penny Hardaway did at Memphis, he'll do fine. That having been said, this isn't the hire I would have made. Gives me strong Ewing to Georgetown vibes. -

I wonder if Woodson and Matta know each other. Seems like a lot of opportunity for disagreement in terms of coaching style, players to target, etc. -

Not sure if it's an omen or not, but my phone literally died right after the Woodson news broke... -

@Chris007 and @JerryYeagley23 don't leave us now! All's quiet from IUBBInsider on Reddit too. -

Could be wrong, but announcing Moser less than 24 hours after his team was eliminated seems awfully quick. -
Maybe so, but in that case, if the ethics are out the window, then you could do much better than Enfield. Might as well go full Pitino at that point.
-
Why would you take Enfield over Drew? If Drew is too shady, then you can't take the HC from USC, whose program was directly implicated in the FBI investigation. Plus Enfield has no Midwest/Indiana ties.

Regardless of your thoughts on Porter, I don't see how anyone couldn't help but be disappointed if we go from the BradTrain to the MussBus to the MoserMoped. -

I doubt that the women's game would get in the way of an announcement tomorrow if Brad and the Celtics wanted to announce the transition then. But otherwise agree. -

Celtics start a 7 game, two-week homestand tomorrow. If news is going to break, presumably it comes during that stretch (unless you believe this is going to stay silent until May/June). -

That and the fact that Brad went way over the top with the Masshole thing. But otherwise, I would agree, even though I'm still pretty skeptical. -

It would probably be a $3.5 million donation to the athletic department, earmarked for HC salary. -

I could see getting them through the trade deadline, but no reason to keep extending things at this point. If you're Boston you'd want to transition as soon as possible now to give the new coach as much lead time before the playoffs start. -

Fair enough, I misunderstood, sorry! Still skeptical, because there is no apparent reason to delay the announcement this long. But happy to be wrong! But what on earth would be the point of having Isiah at that meeting if no Brad? -

No offense to Chris, but I don't buy the Boca meeting, at least not on that timetable. There were flights from Bloomington and Boston to Boca arriving around the same time that Friday. And the plane that flew from Bloomington to Boca ended up flying to Boston later that day. Problem is the flight didn't get in until 6, and nothing else left Boca before then for Boston. Plus there were also reports that Stevens was at the shoot around that morning, called a team meeting for 3 pm, etc. So there is no way the timing was such that they met in Boca and two hours later he gives the masshole press conference. Unfortunately that just wasn't possible. Now is it possible that meeting occurred on another day? Sure. But not that Friday. -

I'm not one to get my nose out of joint over players entering the portal, but there's no way IU can afford to just sit and leave the position vacant until late May. At that point it would be nearly impossible to put together any sort of roster for the coming season. I'm fine with sacrificing 2021-22 for the long term greater good, but you at least have to be able to field a team... -
Interesting. If so, then scratch my post.

Meanwhile, on Oats, you also wouldn't necessarily need a donor to have committed to paying off the full $12 million buyout, just potentially part of it. If a donor was willing to chip in $6 million, and IU was willing to offer Oats, say, $5.5 million/year, he still comes out around $1 million ahead of his current contract even with contributing $1 million/year himself for his buyout.

If Holtmann manufactured this rumor for purposes of engineering an extension from OSU, why would he leak that he'd turned it down and intended to stay in Columbus? You'd want to leave open the possibility that you might leave, to increase your leverage.

Seems odd that Stevens would pick the first game of a back-to-back road trip to be his last. Celtics play at OKC tonight.
